Now this song?????? WOW, brought memories that I cherish, my mom and dad, dancing in the livingroom.....me sitting there looking at love, learning what good music was, the melody soothing and making me smile. I have no doubt that as soon I as pushed play, somewhere in heaven, my parents once again looked at each other lovingly, and danced once more
Nothing short of totally AWESOME. Put many a quarter in the J Box in the 50's to listen to this one. One of the greatest of all times. Imagine being on the dance floor with your lady and listening to this classic.
@Raysboat I can relate to being on the dance floor with your love and hating when this song was over unless of course something like My Prayer by The Platters came up next. Then you were right back in heaven.
Pungooer, I got a laugh out of your comment and I agree with you. We have lost many wonderful singers and so young.. She would have been 88 years old this year!
Her voice is like an angel. Sad she was taken so soon. Her voice is one of a kind. I love, love, love her. So happy that "you tube" can let people experience her music. I was fortunate enough to live through her era.
I grew up with Rock 'n' Roll, but I'm so glad that my parents had a great record collection with singers from the 40s and 50s. I learned to love all the great vocalists of that period. Dinah was always one of my favorites and I just love this song.
Silky soul; I love this. Her rendition of the classic "What A Difference A Day Makes" reaches the zenith. A sweet, classy, sexy song for lovers to dance to. Just - WOW! Thanks for this great post.
@pungooer And Lady Gaga. And Kid Rock. And Puff Diddy Daddy Farty Licky. And anyone who every was a contestant on "American Idol". And J-Lo. And the "Friday, Friday..." girl...
@seansocheap I never heard Jamie's version; maybe I should. Sometimes I make the call too early. Just that I heard this version when I was still a teenager (1970s) and liked it ever since then.
I loved her as a great vocalist when I was in my teens and early twenties. Now, almost 50 years later, she is still one of my all time favorite singers. Such a beautiful woman and great voice to be gone way, way, way to soon.
Read Donna Summer's biography "Ordinary Girl: The Journey" where she writes she this song was her father's favorite and she learned to mimic Dinah's voice to sing the song to him.
This song reminds me of days that know longer exist. When my people were more united, when we were more spirtual, family oriented. We all lived together, that means eduacational and financial levals of people. We all had our hopes, dreams and wishes which some succeeded, while many lost out. I think as a race we became more like the man, in other words, " worldly ". As a race we gained the world and lost our souls...Those of you my generation and older knows what i am talking about.
@7252christian Very profound Sir. I as an old white man dare not express such thoughts. Here is what is and has been in my mind for 53 years plus: This song, Sarah Vaughan's Broken Hearted Melody, Sam Cook's You Send Me, A Change is Gonna Come, almost anything Nat King Cole, Same with Brook Benton, Billy Eckstine, dozens of Doo Wop Groups, Motown, Clyde McPhatter, Dee Clark, Major Lance, the Carolina Beach Music crowd, and on and on. I fear 2 decades of rap have harmed our young.
There is somerhing about this song that gets my nod but otherwise it is definetly one of those songs from back when I have lived without. I'm tuning it in & taking another listen & in turn giving my point of view despite the fact I may not be going along with the flow. I know nothing else by Dinah, it was the hit by her that charted & perhaps her biggest hit by far here in Vancouver Cda where they didn't play all that Rockabilly that I'm now able to tune in & enjoy. Thx4 postin'
@xxxxlorixxxx Hey, I'm not at all ashamed, I few good making my point of view & it just wouldn't seem right to get around the truth, so in the eyes of the beholder I'll tell the truth, she isn't my style. If I want to listen to a love song or two by a female I'll listen to Connie Stevens & 16 Reasons or Kath Young & AThoasand Stars, Dinah dosen't cut it with me on this song, I don't know what to say otherwise. Hey, remember that honesty is thwe best policy!
Such a beautiful and romantic song, thanks for posting it; And, it's the perfect song to listen to when we're snuggling with the person we love.... This is for you, Armando, for giving me the gift of you which is what I had dreamt of my whole life... "What a difference a day made twenty-four little hours." "Today I am a part of you, Dear, my lonely nights are through, Dear, since you said you were mine.." In 32 hours I'll be in your arms again where I belong... All my love, Jacquie Torres xoxoxo
What a difference a day made twenty-four little hours brought the sun and the flowers where there used to be rain my yesterday was blue, Dear, today I am a part of you, Dear, my lonely nights are through, Dear, since you said you were mine, Lord, what a difference a day makes there's a rainbow before me skies above can't be stormy since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss it's heaven when you find romance on your menu what a difference a day made and the difference is you...... I love you!
I have only just rediscovered this song after forgetting it for so long - I love it so much, keep waiting for everyone to leave the house so I can turn up the volume as far as possible!

What a clear and concise voice she had. This song as many during those years always told a story of love and what we need so desperately in our music today. Always love this song and this arrangement. A great R&B singer.
Impeccable phrasing, a fabulous unique style! Miss Dinah was right up there with the best of her time. We lost her way too soon. Man, I just loved her music!
a life too short to give to the world a look at all the beautiful words and lyrics that could be interpreted by a precious voice and a wonderful singer who fell into the world of drugs. ROSELLI
On July 2, 1963 she married her seventh husband, NFL player Dick "Night Train" Lane. On December 14, 1963, Lane found his wife dead in their home. She had accidentally overdosed on a mix of prescription medication at the age of 39. Dinah Washington is buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.
I had no idea Dinah died so young !! If it happened and I heard it in 1963 it didn't sink in. 1963 was a tough year. Oh... I just realized, December 14, 1963, 3 weeks after President Kennedy was assassinated.... that explains it.
Her voice has a silky - honey quality - just like Billy Holliday's - those two superstars influenced in a great manner - the American jazz female vocalists' - style!
@tango3721 if you love these ladies, check out Ella Fitzgerald! These women are of such a different class of vocalist - wish we had them around today!
This song was made originally by the mexican Maria Greever in 1934 with the title in spanish: CUANDO VUELVA A TU LADO which literally means: WHEN I GET BACK NEXT TO YOU, maybe Chet Baker made the words in english.

I really love songs like this one. I sometimes wonder what the world might be like today if all songs were full of lovely words such as here.
Maybe we would not suffer so much unhappiness and violence.
Some time soon someone is going to come along who can pen similar masterpieces and he or she could maybe just change the world for the better.
