if it was a clean stuart wouldn't have a FRACTURED JAW...you can see that stuart didn't hit his head falling to the ice, so the only way he got this injury was from a shoulder to the head. this is clearly a hit to the head and thus a dirty hit. kostopolous could've absolutely destroyed stuart with a clean check by going lower and driving through his chest and midsection. it actually would've been a way harder (and cleaner) check

If you do a web search of Ovechkin nothing comes up with a 10 games suspension. Only two seperate two game suspensions.
I never said Kostopoulos didn't deserve the suspension, I hate seeing hits like that, but Brad Stuart is the kind of player that sometimes hit the same way. Just type «Brad Stuard hits» and you'll see how often he goes straight to the head...
Disagree with this suspension, Stuart had his head down fishing for the puck and Kostopolous caught him. If Stuart gets back up and continues on with the play then in my mind the whistle doesn't even blown. This is another case of a player being suspended for the outcome and not the action itself. Hits like this happen every night in the NHL and nobody gets suspended until somebody gets hurt. If you want real consistency from the NHL then they have to start coming down on the actions.

When he first gets hit, his left skate is on the ice, but as hes spinning, you can see the skate come off the ice...and its not like he just lifted it off the ice, because you would have to have your right skate on the ice to give you leverage...he literally jumped in the air. DIVE, pure and simple.
@nyr9teen9d4 I watched the replay in full screen mode over and over again. If you stop it at :42 that is the best angle to see that the hit, IMO, was legal. You see Tom K coming in, elbows down, and hits him with his shoulder. After contact he pushes through Stuart with his hands. It's too bad for Stuart that he had his head down. Same thing happened with the Colby Armstrong hit the other day, If he gets up Ben Eager gets a double minor at worst for the sucker punch and we're done with it.
I don't mind hits in a game but stuff like that should be dealt with! If these hits would have been looked at when Stevens was laying people out the game would not have gotten out of hand like this!
i watched it a few times, looks like he was able to keep both the skates on the ice. i know for a fact the left skate never left the ice and the right skate stayed on the ice if it did leave at all it wasnt that much. to me this was a hit u dont wanna see. he never expected to be hit. but he did make contact with the puck or was near it enough to get hit. i guess it all comes down to if ur a calgary or detroit fan. u'll make ur own asumptions. i like the pens so i will go with clean.

Kostopoulos will be suspended, that's a no brainer. It's a head-related injury caused by a check, and against the Wings. Bettman needs to protect his large-market US teams, so the suspension is going to happen. The question, is how long will it be. I'm going with 3 days and the maximum fine as a repeat offender. Clearly the head wasn't targeted, but it was a blindside hit and Stuart changed the intended point of contact at the last second. If not for the broken jaw, would have been a clean hit.

I agree with thomas, Im Impressed by how the Red Wings didnt go after him but really i think all Kostopoulos wanted was a little recognition by his team and fans. Perhaps he overdid it. Punishment may be needed, but all in all i think it was just bad luck on both players parts.
I agree the hit deserves some punishment for hitting the head at all, but I will not concede Kostopolous aimed principally for the head. When Stuart was bent down he looked like he was going for shoulder to shoulder, when Stuart straightened up he dropped his shoulder aiming for his chest instead but caught his jaw. That's what that looks like to me. That's all. Suspension for sure, I agree. But I don't think he directly targeted the head like people are saying.

These hits didn't happen because the league wasn't filled with assholes the way it is today. The NHL is promoting itself using the most violent hits it can find, this one here isn't a hit, it is a deliberate injury, along the line of mcsorley/brashere, or what chris simon/ tie domi would do.

Every big hit, every highlight reel hit, every praised hit is 90% the hit, 10% about the puck. Sairich/Marleau, Morrow/Michalek, Phaneuf/Hamel, Campbell/Umberger, every Stevens or Kronwall hit. They focus on making a major game changing hit, that might make the other team hear footsteps. Kosto took out a guy trying to clear a rebound, keep the puck in, what's wrong with that?

I still don't understand how Matt Cooke didn't get suspended for his hit on Savard. Campbell is ridiculous with how inconsistent his decisions are. If him and Bettman weren't butt buddies he wouldn't have a job with the NHL.
And I agree that you shouldn't follow a hit through with your elbow, but Kostopoulos' elbow wasn't a factor in the injury to Stuart. That was a shoulder to the jaw.

This is the second time this useless greek nothing has seriously injured someon. 2 years ago at Toronto and also earlier this year an elbow to the head sidelined another player. if it was a clean stuart wouldn't have a FRACTURED JAW...you can see that stuart didn't hit his head falling to the ice, so the only way he got this injury was from a shoulder to the head. this is clearly a hit to the head and thus a dirty hit. kostopolous could've absolutely destroyed stuart with a clean check by going lower and driving through his chest and midsection. it actually would've been a way harder (and cleaner) check

It's ridiculous. if Ovechkin landed that same hit he get a slap on the wrist.
Like it or not that wasn't a dirty hit, it was greasy hitting a guy that vulnerable but by no means was that a hit comparable to Ruttu's hit on Darcy Tucker.

Disagree with this suspension, Stuart had his head down fishing for the puck and Kostopolous caught him. If Stuart gets back up and continues on with the play then in my mind the whistle doesn't even blown. This is another case of a player being suspended for the outcome and not the action itself. Hits like this happen every night in the NHL and nobody gets suspended until somebody gets hurt. If you want real consistency from the NHL then they have to start coming down on the actions.

When he first gets hit, his left skate is on the ice, but as hes spinning, you can see the skate come off the ice...and its not like he just lifted it off the ice, because you would have to have your right skate on the ice to give you leverage...he literally jumped in the air. DIVE, pure and simple.

@nyr9teen9d4 I watched the replay in full screen mode over and over again. If you stop it at :42 that is the best angle to see that the hit, IMO, was legal. You see Tom K coming in, elbows down, and hits him with his shoulder. After contact he pushes through Stuart with his hands. It's too bad for Stuart that he had his head down. Same thing happened with the Colby Armstrong hit the other day, If he gets up Ben Eager gets a double minor at worst for the sucker punch and we're done with it.

i watched it a few times, looks like he was able to keep both the skates on the ice. i know for a fact the left skate never left the ice and the right skate stayed on the ice if it did leave at all it wasnt that much. to me this was a hit u dont wanna see. he never expected to be hit. but he did make contact with the puck or was near it enough to get hit. i guess it all comes down to if ur a calgary or detroit fan. u'll make ur own asumptions. i like the pens so i will go with clean.

This guy ended Mike Van Ryn's career 3 years ago with cheap shot from behind. Broken jaw, broken teeth, concussion and even a broken hand!!! This is Bettman's NHL though, these hits are more frequent now that fighting is punished so severly. If guys had to answer for cheap shots, less would happen. We see hits like this on a weekly basis now, this was never the case in 70's and 80's. Let the players police themselves on the ice and there'll be less of this stuff going on. NHL is now a joke

I can see it wasn't his intention. I know it wasn't a clean hit, but Kostopoulos' job is to play physical, he finished his check but hit Brad's head. If he doesn't finish his checks, his coach will bench him.
Something I don't like about all this is when I was playing hockey in highschool, we had hits like this every game, and most of the time no penalty call.. the only thing they had to say was: keep you head up

Tom still could have gone lower but the fact that Stuart is taller than Kostopoulos may be the reason why it looked like a head hunting check. i've seen Kostopoulos play many many time, he's not that kind of player, i dont think it was his intention.

@NHLArchive players that are taller have a higher center of gravity, so you want to hit the guy a little higher than usual, its an automatic reaction. like you said the risk of nailing the head is there especially if the other player do not see it coming and put himself in a vulnerable position. i continue to think that it wasn't TK's intention.

Kostopoulos will be suspended, that's a no brainer. It's a head-related injury caused by a check, and against the Wings. Bettman needs to protect his large-market US teams, so the suspension is going to happen. The question, is how long will it be. I'm going with 3 days and the maximum fine as a repeat offender. Clearly the head wasn't targeted, but it was a blindside hit and Stuart changed the intended point of contact at the last second. If not for the broken jaw, would have been a clean hit.

I agree with thomas, Im Impressed by how the Red Wings didnt go after him but really i think all Kostopoulos wanted was a little recognition by his team and fans. Perhaps he overdid it. Punishment may be needed, but all in all i think it was just bad luck on both players parts.

I agree the hit deserves some punishment for hitting the head at all, but I will not concede Kostopolous aimed principally for the head. When Stuart was bent down he looked like he was going for shoulder to shoulder, when Stuart straightened up he dropped his shoulder aiming for his chest instead but caught his jaw. That's what that looks like to me. That's all. Suspension for sure, I agree. But I don't think he directly targeted the head like people are saying.

Wings ALWAYS seem to get the short end of the stick when it come to fair and non bias officiating. I see this hit no different, if not worse then Bertuzzi's hit on Steve Moore. These hits didn't happen because the league wasn't filled with assholes the way it is today. The NHL is promoting itself using the most violent hits it can find, this one here isn't a hit, it is a deliberate injury, along the line of mcsorley/brashere, or what chris simon/ tie domi would do.

For everyone saying Kostopolous went for the hit and wasn't focused on playing the puck, that's a moot and stupid point. Every big hit, every highlight reel hit, every praised hit is 90% the hit, 10% about the puck. Sairich/Marleau, Morrow/Michalek, Phaneuf/Hamel, Campbell/Umberger, every Stevens or Kronwall hit. They focus on making a major game changing hit, that might make the other team hear footsteps. Kosto took out a guy trying to clear a rebound, keep the puck in, what's wrong with that?

so to answer your question "what's wrong with that?" It was an illegal hit against a defenceless player from the blindside.

@Thomas064084 the difference is that those are all big hits in the open ice or north south, Hitting is indeed about destroying the other guy, but that should be a product of just a massive full force check, not this dinky one, simply aiming all of his energy at stuart's jaw.

@Thomas064084 you are right, kostopois doesn't have to go for the puck. nobody should be crying about interference in this case. the problem is intent to injure/blindside hit to the head. this is an automatic multigame shame sitting for any other team, perhaps because the flames are so shit and the wings are so good, there might not be a suspension

@jessicalau78 I can only think of two dirty plays he did, one was that accidental board on Van Ryn and the other was the suckerpunch on Timonen at the end of a playoff series (which is excusable in the heat of the moment). Are there many others?
