  • I go back and watch this video from time to time. Very few people out there appreciate this game series as much as I do. It's so refreshing.

  • Thank you for telling the truth about Maximo. Ok game but its NOT GG. I dont think the american studio ever understood what makes the 2D-games so special.

Btw Gargoyles Quest was first released on the original Gameboy. It had a sequel on the NES, Gargoyles Quest 2, and then Demons Crest on the SNES.

As you say, Demons Crest is probably the best looking SNES game ever. Its quite difficult but its an awesome game and deserves much more praise.

  • Super Ghouls n Ghosts are one of my favourite games ever. I own the complete boxed game for SNES.

  • I love theGhouls n Ghosts series

I've played the Arcade version of Ghouls n Ghosts at Game City in Austria it was awesome!

The designer Tokuro Fujiwara also made the PS1 Game "Tomba!" wich is my favourite game of all time!!!!!!

  • My favorite Gameboy game was Gargoyles quest which I still have. It wasn't mentioned in this review but it sure is noteworthy. I enjoyed this review and actually never realized that Ghouls and Ghosts was considered part of the same series as the Gargoyles Quest games. I always wanted Demon's Crest but couldn't afford it in my youth.

  • @donotresussitate Its a spin off series. Firebrand first appeared as an enemy in Ghost n Goblins.

  • In Makaimura (Dendy: Ghostly Village) there's no continues.

  • this game is basically the old school version of Dark Souls

  • @Josiah2634 dark souls is so much fun XD

  • u cud do a vicdeo of the best retro games on vc and psn

  • Firebrand is a bad ass!

  • um no offense, but you said gameboy advance....you do mean the original gameboy right?

  • @CamsEyeView No, he means "advance."

  • @Awesomeman37

no i mean when he was talking about the gargoyle quest series he said the first game was on the gameboy advance

  • @CamsEyeView Ah I see, I am sorry I misunderstood.

  • @Awesomeman37

no worries i wasnt very clear

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE Ghouls 'n Ghosts! Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Mega Drive) was my first game I bought after I bought the Mega Drive!

  • Nice review i liked the original genesis version which was virtually the same as the arcade version cause thats the one i had, but i wouldn't have wanted it any other way :D

  • Gargoyle's Quest series was so good. I'm buying a 3DS for Gargoyle's Quest alone.

  • hardest game in the history of games

  • HappyConsoleGamer Arthur made an apperance in Marvel vs Capcom 3:Fate of two worlds as a playable character

  • you always say ghosts n goblins. is it ghosts and ghouls or am i mistaken :D

  • Fell in love with this series after seeing it at Brighton seafront arcade (in England)must have been very young...couldnt remember the name of it but seeing it years later the memories came back. Maybe its a generation thing...im sure young 30 somethings feel the same about this game..like me!

  • i got a super nintendo with super ghouls and ghosts. its hard as hell but really fun

  • Have you tried the original gargoyle's quest on the original gameboy?

  • This must be the music inspiration for Maximo? They sound pretty similar.

  • @FallenAng3lWings They are...are almost an exact adaptation of the series. I just wish they would revive the series and give us the 3rd and final installment.

Did anyone ever notice that Achille in Maximo looked just like Nebiroth and Lord Sardius, not to mention the boss battles were somewhat similar?

  • how i would kill for a full fledged 2.5D remake of super ghouls and ghosts

  • Gotta love how Capcom changed "Lucifer" to "Loki" to avoid offending people. That big red thing sitting on a throne in the last stage of Ghouls N' Ghosts sure ain't a Nordic god of mischief. :P

  • Hey bro! just rewatching this one, I just picked up the sega genesis version today :P hope all is good with you man!

  • Ive been watching you for years, but I just now noticed this wonderful video. Im very glad I found It :D

  • Many points of this was cool... BUT

Seriously? In any of the replays you can get the "ultimate weapon" as early as board 1 for the original play throughs. It's not the best weapon, and it's required to kill the last boss, but it seems like you never did it or cared.

Maximo you hit the nail on the head with, but it's *decent* if you play through.

Otherwise, spot on. Go back and play the originals, it's still some of the best platforming you will find.

  • Dude i wish your vids went on for longer awesome review

  • Demons Crest was an amazing game, I wish theyd make a second one.

  • I have Capcom Generations 2 disc for my Saturn.

  • Good stuff. Keep it up! :)

  • Damn this game is nostalgic when this came out i was six and it scared the flying fuck out of me

  • Better than Irate Gamer's review of the game.

  • @MechanicalInternet irate gamer is... harsh.

  • Super Ghouls' N Ghost is my all time favorite. It's super awesome.

This series is not as impossible as everyone says it is, just play it for 2-3 hours to get the hang of it and then it will be doable.

  • Ghouls n Ghosts ROCKS!!!! Happy Console Gamer ROCKS!!!!!

  • I missed the Master System's version on your video. It was, in my opinion, the best ghouls and ghosts of them all because there was a RPG feel to it. I mean, you had to use every single weapon until you got the last special one which you could use to defeat the last boss. You also had to build your armor, speed and magic throughout the game. It made the quest a bit easier but more enjoyable in the end. At least that's what I think.

  • Great vieo man,im subscribing...

To bad that the maximo games didnt leave a bigger impression on you, because im playing maximo vs army of zin right now, and it kick ass! ^^

  • Where is X68000 version? Best version by far!!

  • I always come back to watch this video. I love this series

  • Rock on. Ghouls and Ghost is my "hands-down" favorite game of all time. I started with the first 1985 arcade and have played the SNES Ghouls and Ghosts. I wasn't aware of all the other versions until I watched this video. I'm going to have to buy a PSP I guess. Great video!

  • Just bought it today for 5€ :D

  • i loved demons crest, hard as fuck though, and i love maximo series

  • thought maximo was a good 3d translation but it had camera issues, never player army of zin,i was wondering if the supergrafx 1 is on hu or cd?but yea i love this series i was playin arcade version the other day on mame on my dstwo on ds,it was too hard to keep putting quaters in so i never played the arcade1 &i only saw it once

but ghosts and goblins for nes was my first 8 bit game ever except duckhunt and gyromyte that came with my nintendo delux set,

  • great video ,but i wish you went more into the supergrafx version and the gba version i had all the other ones and i think i have the supergrafx version rom i prolly have gba rom too ,i have some mame roms but i dont which version i have im pretty sure i just have 1 rom 4 mame i think its the 2nd arcade 1 ,i never played the psp 1 either,i have the 1st maximo but not the second it sounded way to differsnt from the series ,something about robots or somethin, but i thought maximo was agood 3d trans

  • Is Ghouls n Ghosts a graphically enhanced version of Ghosts n Goblins? Or are do they follow different story lines? They seem very similar to one another...

  • I beat the one at 0:05, such a hard game... i cant remember how frustrated i got, its rediculous how you must go through it twice!

  • the entire ghouls'n ghost series its extremly and insanely hard but its awesome!!!

  • the entire ghouls'n ghost series its extremly and insanely hard

  • Ghouls n Ghost on Genesis was the bane of my gaming life, such a hard game, the only other game i can think of that is harder on the megadrive/genesis was Kid Chamelon and Herzog zwei

  • Thank god i have a Wii. Im going to go buy me Super Ghouls and Ghost!!!!!

  • @WoWDemondays I don't know if it's up yet but you should check out Demon's Crest. I was a really good game.

  • @WoWDemondays Hahaha prepare for PAIN!!

  • @WoWDemondays Thank god i have a SNES. I'm going to play Super Ghouls and Ghost right now!

  • @WoWDemondays Thank God I have a PC + ZSNES. I'm going to pirate and then play Super Ghouls and Ghost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The farthest I got through of ghosts n goblins I got to the fucking 4th level.

  • unlike mostt people i actually like the idea of playing through the game twice, it's a good memory test

  • If I remember correctly, Super Gouls ´n Ghosts (snes) didn´t need two play-through´s to complete the game.

Though I live in Europe so that could have been a difference in localizations.

Hey Europeans, I´m right about this, no?

    Refresh my memory.

  • @JimmyBackbeat There are 2 loops in Super GnG

  • @123doomdoom Even in The European release? I cleared the game several times when it was released but I just cant seem to remember that.

Also, in the European release, maybe the NA releases to, there was some kind of code that were displayed after clearing the game. I never could figure out what that code was, especially when there weren't any code functions in the game. Weird...

  • @JimmyBackbeat Try the rom and find out. I am sure capcom wouldn't make absurd change like that.

  • lol maximo is a sidegame to ghouls n ghosts? Well that would at least explain that boxershort thing...

I always loved Maximo, Army of Zin was my first PS2 game actually, especially that credit vid were an 8-Bit Version of the character Death flew back through all levels you had beaten, was just great! :D

  • were the sega master system version ??? the best 8-bit version of this game

  • This games amazing no doubt, but god damn its hard

  • Super Ghouls n Ghosts boasted some of the coolest graphical effects I had ever seen, I was particularly fascinated by the rotating levels. Awesome series and allthough I never managed to finish them I sure tried. :)

  • I suck at ghouls and ghosts- but I STILL LOVE IT!

I'll say it right here, and right now, it's got the best main theme in existance, and I respect it for staying a challenge in a world where modern games seem to hold your hand for you for the first few levels.

  • Hey another great review! Overall very complete, however I was wondering why you left out the arcade-perfect versions of Ghosts'n'Goblins and Ghouls'n'Ghosts that came out in Capcom Generation 2 (Japanese Sega Saturn and PlayStation), as well as the ones in Capcom Classics Collection (X Box, PS3 and PSP)?

  • Super Ghouls n ghost was my favorite game. that was the first time i played the ghouls n ghost series. and man. the first time i see the princess telling u to go back all the freaking stages... i was...no...

great game, i wish i could have the gba version..

  • Good Review straight to the point and concise

  • i just wanna say. fuck those games, soo freakign hard. lol

    still fun though lol.

  • Good fucken review!

  • well at least at the end of the games they don't make you fight through the stages backwards before you can do your second play through with the bracelet weapon.

I noticed that just about every game that didn't have good sales (most of the time) there isn't a reason just people didn't buy it. That's strange it's not like demon's crest was on some forgotten console no just people didn't buy it. I always thought that was kinda weird.

  • at 1:14 *damn I gotta get dressed and get that chick back... I wasn't finished*

  • I love how its hard, and I like my games easy :).

  • Ive got that feeling about metal gear solid 1 on ps1. ive musta finished it like 10 times i unlocked the tux and all that stuff. I remember everywhere to go and the enemies routes and all that stuff. Man im sad

  • Great video on one of my favorite series.

I actually never knew about Demon's Crest till watching this. I'll be hunting down a copy now, so thanks for bringing that game to my attention.

  • There was actually a Ghouls 'n Ghosts released on the gameboy color as well.

  • Must say it again: Great shows you guys make!

  • I finished Ghosts 'n' Goblins both loops on one life, Capcom Classics Collection version.

  • hardest game ever made.

  • Haha you even included some Japanese writing in the tags

  • I found your channel by this vid i will check out your other vids and prob sub. Hope to see great things

  • I can't beat the first level, I bought Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the VC.

  • Loving those video games specials Hope for a Ninja Gaiden series special.

  • your reviews are great one of the greatest games on the genesis was actually blessed to have this game when i was 7 loved this shit

  • these are great games only problem

    too freaking hard

    at least on nes

  • love this series. i owned it years ago on the NES (which i beat many times) and the SNES (which i also beat many times and still play to this day).

    awesome collection you have there.

  • this game reminds me of maximo.

  • @ST0PM0SS

Maximo is a continuation of the series

  • @ST0PM0SS because it done by the same company.

  • I like your game collection in the background

  • Wow this game has been lost to me for about 10 years, I always said I would buy this game when I watched my brother playing it in the arcade, he only got to level 2.

  • My first experience of the Ghosts n Goblins series was Ghouls n Ghosts on the Genesis.

  • Great vid johnny! I also love the series. Yet it seems like you have missed out on the master system version, you should really check it out!

  • ALL TIME CLASSIC'S

  • Love the video man, very well done. I never knew about Demons Crest on the snes, I will have to track down a copy.

  • ive been here for a couple hours checking out yr show man this shows awsm!!!!!

  • I want to try and pick up the Mega Drive and GBA versions of these :-)

  • great series!!

  • I have all the Ghouls N' Ghosts until the Ultimate ghouls n' ghosts...which I'm definately getting...and I want a physical copy of Demon's Crest, it's in my top 3 favorite games for the SNES. :)

  • i was 13 years old at a laundromat a few blocks away from my junior high school in 1990. i was cutting the first 2 periods of class and started playing ghouls n ghosts. i was playing 2 players with a friend and he was waiting his turn to play. it just so happened that i beat the game without dying (only one time). ahhh memories. then, we would move to play outrun which was the arcade cabinet next to ghouls n ghosts. and then after burner 2. that laundromat is still there but arcade games gone :(

  • Love this game on the megadrive, especialy lvl 3 at baren rankels tower with all the mud knights and goblins flying around :):)

  • My favorite HCG video.

I've watched it 10 times and it never gets old.

GnG is my fav. gaming series of all time.

And Demon's Crest is my fav. SNES game.

  • Always wanted this game! I remember they did a thing on the Austrialian TV show neighbours where one of the kids got addicted to this computer game. LOL. The same kid used to play wings on the Amiga which I copied off someone years later (on a copy disk Xcopy which I also copied!)when I got a Amiga! Happy days!

  • i remember playing the snes version on an airplane

  • well done

  • The whole paranormal theme of this series always attracted me as well as the aspect of having a chance to whoop up on Satan (how many people can say they kicked the devil's ass?) but, as much fun as they were and still are to play, I've always found them to be more than a little frustrating with the main character's endurance being so low (2 hits to die?? Is his armor made of tin?).

However, it's still fun and the nostalgia, beautiful graphics and creepiness keep me coming back to it.

  • Excellent review. My favorite game for over 18 years!

  • Still a pain in my ass but a fun game...well fun gameS. I still wish Demon's Crest got a remake for DS.

  • I remember I played Ghouls 'N Ghosts on my PSP (Capcom Collection Reloaded) and just being so pissed off. But I knew I can beat it..... twice. It was hard as shit, it made me go nearly insane, but when I beat the boss, TWICE, I was on top of the fuckin world.

  • great recap of a brilliant game series.

ghosts n goblins still frustrates the hell out of me to this day. !!!!! lol :)

  • I loved super ghouls and ghosts wish i could play it still, also check out demon's souls and compare the 2 in similarities it is shockingly close

  • thats alot of games :O

  • I'll be playing ghouls and ghosts on halloween along with some other spooky favorites of mine. Then I watch monster squad. Its a tradition. I hope you do a Halloween special and change the opening and the credits like the Simpsons always did. The Haunted Casket Gamer Oooooooooooo.

  • Great review, glad its been done. Personally I find the series is a bit overlooked. Megadrive/Genesis version is my fav :) Defo gotta check out that PSP one though, looks brilliant!

  • I had the one on the NES but my so called friend stole it from me and I never saw it again. I remember it was a hard game but it looked really good.

  • Ha ha! I just picked up G & G on the NES. I love it.

  • Demon's crest is a fan6atic game and definately the best one of the series.

  • I played Demon's Crest when I was about 10 years old! Played it on a friends Super UFO, was hooked and finally bought it in 2002 off eBay for a nice price of £7!

  • I tried ultimate ghosts and goblins on the psp after watching this. man is it hard! but it's the good type of hard. the type of hard that you just can't put down.

  • I just got the Super Ghouls n Ghosts and its one of the best games I ve ever played. Was hooked to it like 17 hours the first two days, then I gave it a rest after have being sent back like 8 times to find that f***ing bracelet

  • really love your vids man~ keep up the good work :)

  • I love your series reviews!

  • That's a pretty cool vid about all the different Ghouls 'n Ghosts games!

    :)

  • I'm surprised you didn't like Maximo that much. I mean, compared to other outsourced series revivals Japan has been doing lately, it really wasn't that bad. It still kept the brutal difficulty at least.

  • I like how you included the Gargoyle's Quest series in this video, most reviewers tend to avoid them. :)

And as a side note: There was a Gameboy Color version of Ghosts 'N Goblins in 1999. It was basically the same game, the only difference I remember is the password option.

  • ghouls n ghosts genisis is my best ghouls n ghost game too but i only played 3 ghouls n ghost games so it was an easy choice

  • I really appreciate your overview of the series, it's great when someone is knowledgable about the various games in a series. Your view of these games lines up with my own.

    Keep reviewing games and systems!

  • You've got to be one of the best game reviewers I've seen on youtube, keep up the good work.

  • Awsome Review! (forgot the master system though, 88?)

  • Great review/history of the franchise, mate.

I too have been GnGing since 87 and Ghosts n Goblins (on the c64).

Ghouls, though has to be my favorite.

Its right up there with R-Type and Strider for stuff from that era, for me.

Good job, keep it up. :)

  • Gargoyals quest 2 is one of my fave NES games. Im glad he included that series as part of the G&G review

  • Very good review style. No bull shit just honest opinions about the games, youre obviously not conned by flashed 3D graphics like so many, gameplay is what counts. You put to shame the many awful review videos on youtube. Keep it going!

  • Demons crest is sooo good and underrated

  • Hey man thanks for post the video, it was great. I love this game, since i played for first time (insert coin, how many coins spent playing it)i not stop playin anymore. i have The Gargoyles Quest for Game Boy.

  • supergrafx version is best in sound and grafix

  • I've got Ghosts 'n Goblins, and it is just addicting. It is a pretty hard game, though (I've never gotten past the second stage yet), but it's still awesome. :-)

And to Irate Gamer, if you're watching this, remember:

JUST BECAUSE A GAME IS HARD DOESN'T MEAN IT SUCKS!!!!

  • @gshowguy Irate gamer has no heart or passion for gamming, he's not a gamer, nor a creative reviewer. He simply does some research and shows people some gameplay, that's all... a pretty bad AVGN rip off.

The reason I like your show HCG is because I can feel your passion for gamming, you remind me of me a lot back in the day, and still to this day, and because I can relate to that passion I like your show a lot, and because you have that passion, you can make a genuine show with soul.

  • @gshowguy i agree man the game is pretty hard, i always get pissed and play something elce lol

  • @gshowguy Thank you and I haven't got past the 2nd level yet so your not alone

  • @gshowguy This was me playing Ghouls and Goblins on my friends NES.

    Me: Jump, jump! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!

    *died at 1st stage*

Me: Die fucker die!! GOD DAMNIT!!!

    *died on the 1st boss*

    Me: AH YOU FUCKING BITCH!!!

    *drowned in the 2nd level*

    - 3 hours later -

Me: I will beat this mother fucking game!!!

Sure these games are hard as fuck, but they're still amazing and i love them! :D

  • this would translate well on the DS

  • great review and i i proud to say i just won a factory sealed version of Demons Crest today will be here next cant wait to play but it came at a hefty cost but well worth it keep up great reviews

  • You're in for a treat. Make sure you collect some items in DC & you get alot more levels. Tons of great boss battles in this game.

  • Forgot to mention, Demon's Crest is incredible...The dark & moody music is phenomenal, & like you said it's one of the best looking games on the SNES.

The spiritual successor "Maximo" didn't have the same feel, I don't even include it in the GnG realm.

  • *You did forget to mention the Capcom Generations 2 version on the Saturn/PS.

That let's you play the arcade versions of Ghosts' N Goblins, & Ghouls' N Ghosts, as well as SG&G.

    And...

Did you know they released a 2nd version in Japan of UG&G on the PSP. Due to complaints by fans that it wasn't arcadey enough, they eliminated much of the collecting and back tracking elements.

The PSP game is very solid!

Unfortunately it sold very poorly so we'll likely never see a sequel.

  • Finally! We have somebody who knows his GnG history, & appreciates its excellence. I liked your series overview.

GnG seems to get beat on to much for it's high difficulty. The Genesis version is challenging, but not super hard.

I bought a Genesis in February 1990 with Ghouls' N Ghosts, & was blown away & played it all night skipping school the next day.

To this day it remains my favorite game ever.

Look at my youtube name. :)

  • good vid retro games are great

  • I did not know that Demon's Crest was part of that franchise. I loved that game. I personally like it better than Ghouls and Ghosts.

  • awesome review dude. ghouls n ghost is one of favo. series.

  • Awesome review. And Great series (ghouls n ghosts)

  • Demon's Crest was absolutely great!

  • ghost and goblins is a ultra challenging game that makes the irate gamer really mad

  • This game is absolutely amazing. I just bought the PSP and I cannot put it down. It's beating me down relentlessly, but I just love getting new armor, and weapons so often! It's crack for me, and all of the enemies are really cool =) Great video, I'll try and check out Super Ghouls and Ghosts on VC for Wii!

  • Speaking of which...how about a Ninja Gaidan series video?

  • Great look at the series. I agree with you on the Maximo games, it just didn't even the same kind of grap that the original series had to it. Same deal with me for the Ninja Gaidan games, the originals were great. The newer versions are decent, but don't blow me away like the other games did.

  • good mini reviews!

When speaking of Demon's Crest, I've heard that this game not only did poorly, it apparently had "negative sales".

Do you know anything about that?

  • If you value your sanity, you'll stay as far away from these games as possible! I'm not kidding...THEY ARE BRUTAL!

The guy who made this video is either a gaming wizard having beaten them or he's lying.

  • Honestly, why would sombody lie about this? These are not impossible games just play them for a little while and before you know it you'll figure out how to get past certain parts, but yes they are EXTREMELY challenging.

  • People use to say the same thing about the Ninja Gaidan games. He's not lying, once you get the patterns its not bad.

  • EGM actually gave Ultimate GnG a 4.0/10 rating. I bet it is because they were all horrible at the game and used "dated game design" as an excuse for their poor gaming skills. Blasphemy.

  • i absolutely love demons crest, prob. one of my fav. games for snes! the music in it is soooooo epic, i used to put the game on and record the music to tapes, i hope HCG does a special show on just demons crest, though i know it is highly unlikely.

  • Great review I really enjoyed it. Ghost n Goblins was the very first NES game I ever played. I hope they expand the franchise into the next generation consoles.

  • hey happy console gamer which next gen systems and hand helds do you own ps do you like pc gaming or is taboo to ask since you are the hcg
