There is something about the simple piano chords that really makes this song powerfully melancholic. I'm really liking it. Are there any other songs by this guy that anyone recommends?
@rockmeistro-- go all the way back to Shivers by The Boys Next Door---he has had a varied and fascinating career and all his music is somehow compelling
13tk21 The cubicle thing - that's hilarious. But while I am may not be be fit to tie the laces of Nick Cave's shoes, I have published some short stories and poetry. I am currently working on a film script and novel as well as learning classical guitar...but yes, you're right, in the light of day I am close to being cubicle-ized - although the job involves creative writing. Thanks for making me laugh. Must get on now...Where did I put that pencil...?
I love these ridiculous arguments and commentary. Uncreative people commenting on creative people alway's gives me a little chuckle. What's it like in that cubice all day? If you spent some time "doing" something instead of commenting on someone who IS doing something you might have a more gratifying existence. I've got to go do something now...
This song is about how each of us feels the world is in decline as we age. It also highlights how we let our moral sense slip as we get older - "I went to bed last night and my moral code got jammed/ I woke up this morning with a Frappucino in my hand" - I for one think it is morally reprehensible to spend money on luxury items when people are starving in the world - but alas, I too have sometimes fallen victim to modern consumerist values - Songs like this keep me on track - Thank-you Nick!
The worth of a piece of music cannot be measured by the number of chords it contains. What matters is the overall feeling. I personally find the effect of the three pianos really gratifying. Lyrically, I think their are few artists today who display such a degree of originality. Okay! It doesn't work for everyone - that's fine. I'd also just like to say I think the backing singers are wonderful, too!
You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine. Our opinions just happen to be diametrically-opposed. It doesn't mean either one is right or wrong - just different. In the end our opinions don't matter - all they amount to is a cacophony of ideas - they solve nothing. You don't have to like Nick Cave's music, but then why visit his music videos and soil the enjoyment of others with your negativity. why not find something you enjoy and make a positive contribution to the world instead?
Nick Cave does not have fans, he has admirers. They do not worship him, they respect him. When Jools says, "Amazing! Three pianos, hyhat and seperate drum he is not being derogatory. He is remarking on the song being a masterpiece of minimalism. I don't need to defend Nick Cave - the intelligence, humor and depths to be experienced through his music and lyrics speak for him - just as the ignorance and mediocrity of the five previous comments speak for those who left them. Enough said!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"Masterpiece of minimalism?" Three pianists to play two chords? That's not minimalism; it's utter ineptitude. His music DOES speak for Cave. It knows one word. That word is 'Rubbish'. The 'humour' is puerile. The 'intelligence' is only apparent by its absence.
You are essentially right.. which is what makes it far from rubbish... but classic english white rock'n'roll..

A frapuccino is an invention from the starbucks guy. I went to a starbucks the other day and I ordered an expresso. The cashier asked me if I wanted a single, double, grande, medium, etc, etc. I got pissed off and went to a real coffee shop down the street where I asked an expresso and the guy simply made one and served me. It was well worth walking down those five blocks. Ah, and I didn't have to pay in advance. I paid my bill on the way out like a civilized person.
@TROUBLEWATER: Frappuccino is a bottled coffee-based drink made by Starbucks. It is not the same as Cappuccino. In any case, Cappuccino is not "coffee and milkshake." A Milkshake is milk and ice cream. Cappuccino is Espresso coffeee with steamed milk.

Momus has a sense of humor and is armed by an exceptional vocabulary. Pong is a great album.
But I wouldn't be comparing a poetic satirist to a balladeer. Cohen and Cave operate in entirely different arenas from Momus.
