I haven't heard this in 25 years.

That is the sound that came out of Minas, the "clube de esquina" stuff that is a mix of several influnces, both foreing and domestic. A genre all of its own. A zeitgeist sound of the mid-late 70s and mid 80s. Thanks for posting, this is a historical gem.

Interesting to see him playing that Ibanez (which I assume is the same one he plays today). I had not seen any footage of him playing it before the late 90s, if indeed the footage is from 1988. But it looks old enough... Perhaps he had his Gibson in storage, or something?

The first song is "Mountain Flight", followed by the harmony of a song that I don´t know and then "Manuel, o Audaz", another Toninho´s composition.

"Manuel o Audaz" is the name of the track Rickin. It came out on his second album released in 1980 for EMI Brazil, Pat Metheny guesting on guitar. It did get a CD issue in the USA I think...

His first LP for EMI Brazil is fantastic, contains the wonderful track "Aquilas Coisas Todas" he wrote.

due to the fact that Pat plays his Ibanez PM20 in this clip the year cannot be 1988. It must be 1992 or later where he started his collaboration with Ibanez.

The PM-20 is for the late '80. the PM-100 is from 1992.. think the PM 20 is a Prototype, pat has been not interested in ibanez since 1984. thanks man!

The date is correct. It was 1988 indeed. I visited his apartment in Rio that year with Toninho Horta and sat in that same couch. He played the exact same instrument. He actually had more than one of those there, plus the Synclavier and both his Roland Guitars.

If you like the way Pat Metheny jams on his electric guitar, you should seriously check out Toninho Horta on electric guitar. Then you will understand why Pat Metheny admires him so much. He has been a big influence on Pat. Toninho visits both CA and NYC often. You should definitely catch him the next time he plays in the U.S.
