Actually, I think why people bash on Cave Story's ... Story, (sometimes Bastion's too), is because their basic stories are rather simple (certainly not bad, mind you, I think they're great).
Where these games excel in is presentation. (A complex concept which I believe trolls and haters are incapable of comprehending)
In Bastion, as you play, the story of how the world went so wrong is slowly revealed to you, while at the same time, you are coming closer and closer to setting...
In Cave Story, it begins as a simple game with apparently little to no background or plot other than 'shoot everything other than you or the non-hostile NPC's,' but expands into a greater, more complex plot (with more background details being revealed if you go for the best ending).
I cannot speak for FFVII, as I have not yet played it.
@InBloom You're just bashing on FF7 because it is indeed overrated. In fact, that's why BOTH the top comments are bashing on it. I like both stories to great extent and see no reason to divide into war over this. Also, "Nowadays" isn't entirely accurate, FF7 is over a decade old. While I respect your opinion, I think you're letting your contempt get ahead of you a little bit.
Well, I actually didn't like it, but one day the 0:46 part was stuck into my head for the whole day. So i started to like it. now it's one of my favorite song. :3
Look what happens to the pleasant comments section of a great game like this when you bring up FF7....
....just don't. never again. though since it's being brought up, FF6 had a million times better story characters than 7, and would be a far better basis for comparison with cave story.
@Ultrasyther1 I actually restarted it 3 times. The first time I didn't want the normal ending, so I went back and redid it. But I accidentally talked to professor booster and he died. SO I had to restart yet again, and here I am procrastinating on beating hell.
@Bluerage98 I only did it twice. I had to do hell over like literally 42 times and after the 20th I procrastinated for a month, and then I played it, when I finally beat it, I was like YES!!! ...then I went back a week later and did like twice as good. Though its kinda weird to procrastinate from VIDEOGAMES.
@Bluerage98 I have this problem where I will get to the final boss then stop playing, and Im like "I gotta beat him, I have to finish this game!"... and then return to it 2 years later and beat it
FF7 was a great game, but if you think that its because of its story - Then you need to recheck your nostalgia glasses. The story gets all kind of loony near the end with the clone non-senses.
I'd really really want to hear this thing orchestrated. Starting off very quietly, and them building and building until you've got a great majestic brass section for the melody, and violins/violas/cellos playing the harmony, and possibly some voices in the Halo style...
I'd go to that concert. On the other hand, there is something magical about the sound of the low-quality synthesizers making this beautiful melody.
Its because usually, people who re-arrange this song seem to completely ignore what makes it so amazing. Its a very to-the-point and mellow melody, but has a really really great buildup. Most people try to overdo everything in the song and take forever to get to the buildup, and it just doesn't do so well.
Its just not really a song that can be messed with too much the way its written, i think. It only really has one or two changes in the song.
I've noticed. The Cave Story remix project sort of messed up with "Mimiga Vibe", which really didn't capture this song much at all. It's just such a song.
As for FF7: it wasn't really hyped. It was the series of games AFTER FF7 that have been hyped and over credited and then the fans that state that FF7 was the best just because everyone else said so.
However, this game is unrelated, seperate from any sort of series, and made by ONE PERSON!! I'd say it's pretty good considering.
Why the HELL are people saying the story sucks? It's a hell of a lot better than games that are considered to have good storylines nowadays. (FF7, anyone?) You're forgetting that there's more to a story than the ending, people.
I'm tempted to agree with you, but the whole "it isn't the destination, it's how you get there" argument for plots is the same argument a lot of Square fanboys use. Doesn't matter if the ending, the characters, the overall development, is shit, it's how you GET there... Somehow...
I'd rate this game about equal with an FF game for plot. Which is far from bad, but far from good. Sort of mediocre, only with more overhyped.
I tend to agree with the "it isn't the destination, it's how you get there" in some cases, but in Cave Story's, it isn't just that "how you get there", the destination is different as well: The Doctor is no longer the arch villian of the game, but Ballos is.
Curly's death is, then, indeed a twist in the story.. For it could change it to the whole.
plus you gotta consider the fact that this is a FREEWARE game, unlike those big titles. this was the best freeware game ever, so it deserved to be on WiiWare.
@Cloaytonem2 Look people, FF7 was NOT overhyped. The game came out like 13 years ago, if anything the word is Overrated.
However, the thing is the game wasn't overrated. It was fucking brilliant in its own regard. You can nitpick at the storyline all you want, point is FF7 delivered its story so damn well that its still regarded as one of the best games on the planet.
Its just like Cavestory. The story is only the base -- its what you DO with the story that makes it a memorable one.
Im just tired of FF7 getting this undying hatred for being a good ass game. I mean im sick of the spinoffs too, but it doesn't detract from the original. For someone to call FF7's story bad, or the game itself anything that it doesn't deserve is, frankly, just delusional.
It may not be the BEST GAME EVER but it sure as fuck comes close IMO. No other Final Fantasy has achieved the amount of emotion FF7 has. (although i must say, Final Fantasy X came DAMN close. )
it is overrated. the gameplay is inferior to FF6, the story to FF9, the Music to FF1, the emotional aspect is... inferior to Barkley Shut up and jam gaiden. that is an RPG about basketball, and it is more emotional than FF7. you are a jaded dumbass.

Final Fantasies have either extremely good storylines (FFX) or extremely bad storylines (FF7). It's not really fair to say it's as good as FF as a whole, since each one is different.
The only FF to come close to a good plot was X, and even that was terrible because they had some weird compulsion to ruin the big twists (the most important part of any storyline) well before they even happened.
Also terrible, unoriginal, undeveloped characters (second most important part).
exactly, my personal faveorite is FF4, but I'm not going to have this really crappy argument about which one is better, 'cause I know that 4 is my favourite no matter what
@lnBloom its been a while since we have had a game this good. am I right??? FF7's story will never be topped "probably" but this game its as fricken amazing as FF7 in my oppinion.
@ATOGAMESJ minamalism preference by no means equals not wanting to think. its just some games don't realise that to make us think you need to have a fifty hour long incomprehensible mess of a plot to get its point across (EVERY final fantasy, EVERY MGS game, pretentious games) in cave story, you have likable characters go through conflict while everything is told to you in an interesting yet COHERENT manner, with happy scenes, sad scenes, and awesome scenes. FF7 however, is just a bad story.
@ATOGAMESJ when I think about a plot, I don't want to think "ok... so what exactly just happened?" or "so how exactly does that weird soul...thing work? it wasn't obivously explained" that is my definition of a bad, unmemorable plot.
Indeed, the best plot for me is one that has deep meanings -metaphors for real life things (not destiny), zero plot holes even to an idiot playing it, and likable characters, which FF7 drops on all three accounts.
this game is no generic platformer. yes it does seem like mega man and meteroid, but it has a great story, multiple endings/events a ton of awesome items and to top it all off, it was made by one man.

-Great story... How? A boss with nearly no back story behind him, and an optional boss with only slightly more. No major twists (Curly dying doesn't count because this is avoidable and obviously intended to be the 'true' ending). Multiple endings was hardly something unique in the platformer days, nor is it now.
It's impressive that it was made by one person, but that's just a show of tenacity. While admirable, tenacity doesn't guarantee an amazing game. Cave Story was -good-. Not incredible.
you got me there, but I think it is a great game because of the memories, nostalgia, and the great feeling you get when you play it. I am willing to leave it at that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Game plot twists where someone dies and can then be brought back to life is a staple of bad storylines. All's it says is that the writer wanted to do something unpredictable (a commendable desire, I suppose) but didn't have the brains to do something original, or the balls to do something tragic that would actually last.
Well, I actually see that as a "what if" game. Quiet obvious it is that if you play the game for the first time, without any knowledge about it nor guides, Curly will most likely die, you'll never get to know Ballos' story and the undead core will, indeed, be the last boss.
But once you play it again and pay attention to the signs, you will see the alternate ending, the "what if curly stayed alive", you will then understand whatever was foggy and unclear before.
Cave Story is possibly the most instantly fun game I've ever played, and even if the story isn't to your liking (if it isn't, oh well) then you can't discount the great atmosphere and gameplay. Cave Story is possibly my favourite platformer ever, it feels so fantastic to play.
Perhaps I don't, but Cave Story's story was far too simplistic and predictable, like most plots. The bosses ran from creative to dull and done, as did the stages. There were a good number of secrets though, and the music did a nice range from background to pretty.
I'm not saying it's bad. It was a very well made game, and it was fun to play. All's I'm saying is that it's as overhyped as all hell since most of its fans are fanatic. The plot, in particular.
I think people are more captivated by the characters than the plot (or at least, that's how I am). I agree that, objectively speaking, the plot is nothing special, but the great characters really made it shine. Sue, King, Toroko, Balrog, Curly... the list goes on. I really grew attached to them all throughout the game, and they're the reason I love the plot.
Also, the setting, characters, and music make it feel like a Miyazaki film to me for some reason, which is another reason I love it.
I agree, the story is predictable, but most games these days seem to be. I tend to ignore the fact that you know the ending from the start, and just enjoy the same great story that people have been using since the beginning. Although, one thing about cave story that other games this generation doesn't have. Playtime, a lot of games (EX: Bioshock, and Infinite Discovery) in this generation, I can beat within one day. Cave story lasted longer than that for me, mainly because of speedruns in hell.
Hahah. That's what I usually have to do, but I still complain about it in between. Besides, not all games do it... A few have had generally creative plots, eg Disgaea 2, Shadow Hearts Covenant, etc.
This generation has been really bad for play time, yeah. The PS2 generation was still great though. Got 80-140+ hours out of most good PS2 RPG's, and even games like Mirror's Edge and Resident Evil 5 gave me tons of replay time with speedruns/achievements.
this game has unpredictable endings.{yes endingS!} depending what you do during the game and how you do it...the ending will be differnt......so its always intersting to keep playing it over and over differntly and see what happens..
Funny. When I saw "Cave Story for Wiiware" my next thought was "I hope I Wanna Be The Guy comes to Wiiware!" But it needs a lot of copyright... problems.
Terrific game, really enjoyed it. It says something about games today that this is the only game i've played recently which i've really, really enjoyed.

This generation has been really bad for play time, yeah. The PS2 generation was still great though. Got 80-140+ hours out of most good PS2 RPG's, and even games like Mirror's Edge and Resident Evil 5 gave me tons of replay time with speedruns/achievements.

this game has unpredictable endings.{yes endingS!} depending what you do during the game and how you do it...the ending will be differnt......so its always intersting to keep playing it over and over differntly and see what happens..
thats why this game is awesome!

Funny. When I saw "Cave Story for Wiiware" my next thought was "I hope I Wanna Be The Guy comes to Wiiware!" But it needs a lot of copyright... problems.

you should definitely google it and play it. And after you beat it, find a walkthrough for the hard quest and beat it again.

I agree, this BGM is awesome. And I do think Cave Story is the best PC platform 2D sidescrolling freeware game.

I think it can top some wider categories than that
