Ladies and Gentlemen - I present you the Pro Career of Michael Spinks: Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Win, Loss. And the fight in which he lost - is the one most remember him for. Cooney was the last win, before Mr Tyson rolled up.
Cooney just lacked an effective defense against the jab and overhand right. If Cooney had been taught the cross-armed defense like Tim Witherspoon used and learned how to block the jabs and overhand rights, then he'd have had far more success. He had all the offense plus a wrecking ball left hook.
@tw69hands2 Up until Holmes Cooney didn't need much defense. He only had a few rounds against quality fighters going into the fight and had no "warm-up" fight. It's a shame. After the Holmes fight he self-destructed. His style was very exciting, not at all afraid to take a punch to get inside and land the hook. A far cry from the styles of most of today's champs. How many fighters today would come inside with a 4" height advantage?
Anybody with boxing knows that Jerry Quarry was and remains the best white fighter since Marciano. Gerry Cooney and Tommy Morrison were bums with no chin
@1976GGus1 I think that the Eastern Euros are very good and athletic, but they are not American...and don't fight in an American style....so they just don't grab the attention of Americans the way a black, or white, American heavy would....
@Onieracraft Oh, I'm with you. Wow. It's the inanities, the silly, stupid crap like old comnmercials that really take you back. Esp to see Pete Rose, respected and beloved. This is what it feels like realize you are pushing the other side of 40, I guess?
@1976GGus1 No way in hell would Cooney throw that fight-He wanted the championship more then anything in life-I think you need to have a beer and go back to sleep
@nightcbs i disagree -after staying out of boxing for a few years when Gery Cooney came back he won his last 3 fights-he knocked out both Phillip Brown and Eddie Gregg in the 1st round-he was still a good fighter he just couldn't beat Mike Spinks he probably could have beaten at least half of the fighters below Mike Spinks
@MisterBouncyBounce holyfield never use shilstone, plus holy was 190lbs cruiseweight who went in the ring around 198-200...in his prime as heavyweight he was 204-208..hardly needs roids to gain the extra 6-8 lbs....manny ste said that all they did with tommy hearns is made him eat an extra meal in the evening to gain weight to jump up to middleweight...so a man like holyfield doesnt need roids for 8lbs...people really goto stop talking like mayweather tryin to ruin peoples legacys
@MisterBouncyBounce your whole life is bullshit if thats the only type of reply your able to give, what a sda person you are that only back street talk is all you can muster....go to school learn a few things and maybe you'll understand your own stupid way.....but your prob to much of a cretin for that
@Excecutioner147 you are such a kid. i lived through their careers. i know what i am talking about and you don't. what else do you want me to say? if you really what to know then really research if not then be still. i'm not going to waste my time with you. "back street talk"? lol you are too silly.
@1976GGus1 ooohhh look at you, you've exposed my profile i havent updated since i was 19, WHAT AM I TO DO??!! lmao . its funny how you lost your shit and jumped to so many conclusions just because i wrote one little sentence. you feel better now billy joe ray? or how has coors light and crystal meth withdrawl drove you off the deep end?
@VCthaGOATdunker Yes I have to agree. Ali would have stepped back and asked the ref to stop any fight with the opponent in trouble. Norton could have died. Cooney was no more than a thug and the ref was hopeless too.
@thedrunkgoat Princess, it's called boxing and there have been many, many brutal knockouts and always will be. And believe it or not, they encompass all colors and creeds, I did not see Cooney with a snub nosed .44 in his boxing glove, and nor did I see him with a vial of strychnine trying to make Norton drink it.
Calm down, princess, and don't get your panties all twisted up over race and start calling people racist names as it won't work with or offend me.
I enjoy watching black guys beating the life out of Cooney. I enjoy seeing him in utter pain, like a part of him is dying during these beatings. He was nothing but a broken man after it. To be honest with you, I enjoyed it because it was payback.
I've re-watched the fight, and I can give you that the ref had to stop it, it was a lot of unanswered punches right at the end. But no earlier, because up until then Cooney was still throwing an occasional left (although admittedly they looked weak), and if he could have put something on one of them and connected...
I forgot how insane it was watching commercials in the 80s... the next time you complain about VEVO or something, just come back and watch this clip... back then, after you watched four commercials, it came back to a 10 second reminder that you were watching boxing, and then you got to experience the second set of commercials.
my bag bro I mean Leion! but cory spinks is better than them both his skills is so cold he'll give floyd jr a fucking fight!! that was my dream before pac-man!
The interesting thing about this fight was the fact that it was SUPPOSED to be a CHAMPIONSHIP bout, but the top contender was Tony Tucker and Spinks didnt want to fight Tucker, because there was more money in fighting Cooney. The IBF stripped Spinks of title and this became a non title fight. But Cooney's main motivation for the fight had been finally winning the Championship. Without that motivation he simple couldnt get it going in this fight.
Spinks was one of the most gifted heavyweights ever. And he could bang hard. He was terrified against tyson and folded, but he would have given nightmares to anyone else in the division at the time
I wonder why Spinks went right at Cooney----a pretty decent puncher----but Spinks was terrified of Mike Tyson and threw the fight in the first round instead of trying to win?
@blite13 You're right----but the funny thing is that Spinks didn't seem to be afraid of Cooney or itimidated by Cooney's power (even old Cooney could still hit). But against Tyson, I think Spinks was KOed at the weigh in.
@funktron4 Cooney was finished, his speed was zero. Spinks knew if he let Cooney dictate the tempo that he would be in trouble. He knew if he went at Cooney, that Cooney wouldn't be able to handle the speed advantage. Tyson was in his PRIME when he fought Spinks and Spinks was at his end. He knew he couldn't outspeed or outpower Tyson. He knew he had no chance and he took himself out before Tyson could really give him a beating. Micheal was one thing that his brother Leon wasn't...SMART.
@LedWhisky69 I disagree....at least slightly. Cooney was certainly intimidating if you ask Ken Norton or Ron Lyle. Norton looked like deer in headlights (same as he looked against Earnie Shavers, also a very intimidating guy). As for Tyson, he was indeed intimidating----until Douglas showed people how to deal with the schoolyard bully. After that, the cover was blown. Everyone from Razor Rudduck to Danny Williams stood in front of him firing punches his way. But when Mike was young----wow
@funktron4 There's nothing about Cooney that appears intimidating and I don't think Norton nor Lyle looked intimidated at all in either of their fights. When you describe Tyson, you're talking about two different people. The Tyson that fought Spinks was the last great moment of Tyson's career. Shortly thereafter, Team Tyson was disbanded, Rooney and Cayton were fired, and that POS Don King took over. Don't even bother comparing that Tyson to the Tyson that fought Spinks...it makes no sense.
@funktron4 And, for the record, a post-Rooney/Cayton Tyson still beat the shit out of Ruddock over the span of two fights. I think the Ruddock fights are given too much credit and have risen to a sort of mythical status. Fact is, Tyson dominated both of those fights and, quite frankly, should have never bothered offering him a rematch. That was a complete waste of a fight when he could have challenged Holyfield for the title. Just another fuck over by that POS Don King.
@LedWhisky69 Well, Tyson was only one in a long line of fighters that King messed up. Ask Tim Witherspoon----a guy with huge potential and ended up being an underachiever, in large part because King blackballed him. On Tyson: I understand the "two Tysons" theory and agree with you that maybe too much was made of Ruddock's performances----but you have to admit, Mike Tyson "BB" (Before Buster) would have walked through Ruddock in 2 rounds.
@funktron4 I absolutely agree that King did a tremendous amount of damage to many fighters and to the boxing world, in general. I also agree with what you say concerning Tyson walking right over Ruddock in 2-3 rounds, but I would put that prior to the firing of Rooney/Cayton and the hiring of Don King. You can clearly see how quickly his skills dimished just after the Spinks fight...night and day difference and Douglas seized upon a golden opportunity against a really out of shape Tyson.
Spinks Jinx is what happened to Cooney. . Cooney didn't protest the stopping of the fight he was done done done. Sorry for Cooney, Spinks had better trainers had way more skills knew about how to win had more boxing experience and was way smarter than Cooney. He's lucky Spinks was much smaller. See what George Foreman did to him it's called getting knocked senseless
@counterstriving Nonsense. Cooney had been knocked down twice in one round and was on the receiving end of a barrage of unanswered punches. That's more than enough to warrant the early stoppage of a fight. In fact, it could be argued that it was allowed to go on a little too long.
@Igman2020 Then if you love unrealted comments,...perhaps you might be interested in the fact I baked my first pie tonight. Is that unrealted enough? ;D
@gbrown4x4 LOL! You said "you" were tough but just didn't have enough. Ha Ha,... Always love reading post by people that don't read what they wrote before clicking post. :D
BTW: Cooney (Not Conney) was interesting, but got worked over by almost everyone with any real talent in the ring. So where does the GREAT respect come from in his brief career?
Gerry Cooney took too much punches on the head in this fight, thank God he is still OK till this day. Respect to the man and Michael Spinks for that tremendous show.
Did'ja notice the lady in the audience screaming as Spinks viciously pummeled Cooney to the floor at the 8:14 mark? Lol..Spinks was WAY too much man for Cooney!
@djk28161 I'm not sure that Cooney's mother respects him. How can you respect such a complete bum? The only thing I'll give him is that he could take a punch pretty well.
such a shame Spinks ended his career with the Tyson debacle.he was an awesome lightheavyweight champ and a top heavyweight.him against Holyfield would have been terrific
If, if, if! Cooney had a weak chin and a poor defense. He fought four 'big' fights...the blowaway of the shot Ken Norton, the game, but outclassed title fight against Holmes, this fight against Spinks, and then getting blown away by Foreman. I don't even include the Lyle fight because rumors continue to persist that Lyle threw it. Cooney was a guy who gets remembered because he was white. Which is a SHAME because he is/was NOTHING but class. His work with retired fighters is commendable.
As I recall this fight was considered dangerous for Spinks to take and Cooney was even favored by a few sportswriters. When Spinks finally went to work it looked as one sided as Joe Louis vs. Primo Carnera. Gerry was a good challanger for anyone on the way up, but as a challanger himself? The poor guy was one dimensional. Spinks assault looked so easy to execute against Cooney who leans in dim-witted and takes every punch.
I liked Gerry, but he just had no defense here. That's the Achilles heal for some otherwise good fighters. I thought his remarks after the fight were good. No excuses, and gave credit to Spinks. Thumbs up.
One has to think Cooney lost this fight mentally as much as physically. He seemed to have no clue how to defend himself, not even hold, when he was hurt.
Not that he was as fierce as Tyson, but Cooney was a serious bomber, and I'd have to think if he went right at Spinks from the start he may have gotten him out of there.
@zenmachinefilms I dont know about that. Spinks was an excellent boxer. Great countering. I thionk Cooney's style fit Spinks' style much to Spinks advantage. It was just a style matchup.
Spinks was a terrific fighter. Very much underrated in the all-time best discussions. He's hardly even mentioned which is sad.
I think a great matchup would have been Spinks vs Holyfield during that time. Whether it was at cruiser/Lt Heavy, or around 1989 when Holy made HW. Both with great speed/skill.
I love the inclusion of the ads! I remember this fight. Despite being well past his prime, Cooney showed incredible toughness. Propo to Spinks for maintaining the assault necessary to stop things in five - looks like he was winded from throwing so many power punches.
Pardon my ignorance, but is there any connection between Michael Spinks and Leon Spinks (I.e brothers?!?), the man who defeat Muhammad Ali in '78 to win the heavyweight title with only 7 pro fights prior?
WTF is with the commercials? LOL... hey: did any of the commercials feature anyone recognizable today, except for Pete Rose? (p.s. the Mazda looks like shit today)...LOL!!
Its hard to see what the threat is that the commentators are saying Cooney brings. Cooney only looked threatening when he battled former top contenders who had their prime in the mid 70s. Of course the irony is that Cooney was crushed by a 70's darling (Foreman) in his next fight. Justice served by Big George. Thank God
I don't think Cooney had a glass jaw, or question his courage, but alas, he was the punching bag of the division. Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Norton, Foreman and even Leon Spinks were Champions at any given time. Cooney was always on the outside looking in.
Although I'm a HUGE Tyson fan, I can't help but wonder if Spinks would've given him a much better fight if he had the same confidence he had with Gerry...
I think Tyson eats him up regardless. But you're right...he was TERRIFIED heading to the ring that night. I saw it live as a kid and I knew he was a dead man walking.
Funny how each of these fighters, in their day, both annihilated somebody and later were completely annihilated themselves: Ken Norton destroys Duane Bobick in 58 seconds...Cooney bludgeons Norton in 54 seconds...Cooney destroyed by Spinks here...Spinks destroyed by Tyson (91 seconds)...Tyson butchered by Lummox Lewis...on and on
@theriokid what's with the holding on! Boxers hold and clinch..(ALI) when they know they are getting an arse wooping. at least cooney had the balls to not hold and just walk forward.
@Solowizard : Obviously, you should have spent a little less time learning the intricacies of the VCR, and a bit more time in spelling class, you amateur... And, let's not forget: This is YouTube; not professionally edited material. I was just happy to see an old fight that I never saw before, and then YOU had to come along and bring terrible spelling into it...
I actually like the fact that the 90's commercials aren't edited out of this video

As for Tyson, he was indeed intimidating----until Douglas showed people how to deal with the schoolyard bully. After that, the cover was blown. Everyone from Razor Rudduck to Danny Williams stood in front of him firing punches his way. But when Mike was young----wow
funktron4 6 months ago
@funktron4 There's nothing about Cooney that appears intimidating and I don't think Norton nor Lyle looked intimidated at all in either of their fights. When you describe Tyson, you're talking about two different people. The Tyson that fought Spinks was the last great moment of Tyson's career. Shortly thereafter, Team Tyson was disbanded, Rooney and Cayton were fired, and that POS Don King took over. Don't even bother comparing that Tyson to the Tyson that fought Spinks...it makes no sense.
LedWhisky69 6 months ago
@funktron4 And, for the record, a post-Rooney/Cayton Tyson still beat the shit out of Ruddock over the span of two fights. I think the Ruddock fights are given too much credit and have risen to a sort of mythical status. Fact is, Tyson dominated both of those fights and, quite frankly, should have never bothered offering him a rematch. That was a complete waste of a fight when he could have challenged Holyfield for the title. Just another fuck over by that POS Don King.
LedWhisky69 6 months ago
@LedWhisky69 Well, Tyson was only one in a long line of fighters that King messed up. Ask Tim Witherspoon----a guy with huge potential and ended up being an underachiever, in large part because King blackballed him. On Tyson: I understand the "two Tysons" theory and agree with you that maybe too much was made of Ruddock's performances----but you have to admit, Mike Tyson "BB" (Before Buster) would have walked through Ruddock in 2 rounds.
funktron4 6 months ago

See what George Foreman did to him it's called getting knocked senseless
tellthetruthg 7 months ago
This was a premature stoppage. Cooney still had a puncher's chance.
counterstriving 7 months ago
@counterstriving Nonsense. Cooney had been knocked down twice in one round and was on the receiving end of a barrage of unanswered punches. That's more than enough to warrant the early stoppage of a fight. In fact, it could be argued that it was allowed to go on a little too long.

Gerry Cooney took too much punches on the head in this fight, thank God he is still OK till this day. Respect to the man and Michael Spinks for that tremendous show.

This fight was huge for Spinks because he was an under dog against a much bigger guy and he exposed every weakness Cooney had.

@djk28161 I'm not sure that Cooney's mother respects him. How can you respect such a complete bum? The only thing I'll give him is that he could take a punch pretty well.

Franchiseplay 8 months ago
such a shame Spinks ended his career with the Tyson debacle.he was an awesome lightheavyweight champ and a top heavyweight.him against Holyfield would have been terrific
celphtitled79 8 months ago
His work with retired fighters is commendable.
cbaldwinjr 9 months ago
As I recall this fight was considered dangerous for Spinks to take and Cooney was even favored by a few sportswriters. When Spinks finally went to work it looked as one sided as Joe Louis vs. Primo Carnera. Gerry was a good challanger for anyone on the way up, but as a challanger himself? The poor guy was one dimensional. Spinks assault looked so easy to execute against Cooney who leans in dim-witted and takes every punch.

I want a 900$ cashback on a MAzda 626!!!!
Bjoernbaks 9 months ago
I liked Gerry, but he just had no defense here. That's the Achilles heal for some otherwise good fighters. I thought his remarks after the fight were good. No excuses, and gave credit to Spinks. Thumbs up.
pnutbutrncrackers 9 months ago
One has to think Cooney lost this fight mentally as much as physically. He seemed to have no clue how to defend himself, not even hold, when he was hurt.
Not that he was as fierce as Tyson, but Cooney was a serious bomber, and I'd have to think if he went right at Spinks from the start he may have gotten him out of there.
zenmachinefilms 10 months ago
@zenmachinefilms I dont know about that. Spinks was an excellent boxer. Great countering. I thionk Cooney's style fit Spinks' style much to Spinks advantage. It was just a style matchup.
Spinks was a terrific fighter. Very much underrated in the all-time best discussions. He's hardly even mentioned which is sad.
I think a great matchup would have been Spinks vs Holyfield during that time. Whether it was at cruiser/Lt Heavy, or around 1989 when Holy made HW. Both with great speed/skill.
playmayker88 9 months ago
I love the inclusion of the ads! I remember this fight. Despite being well past his prime, Cooney showed incredible toughness. Propo to Spinks for maintaining the assault necessary to stop things in five - looks like he was winded from throwing so many power punches.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there any connection between Michael Spinks and Leon Spinks (I.e brothers?!?), the man who defeat Muhammad Ali in '78 to win the heavyweight title with only 7 pro fights prior?

For God's sake Cooney, clinch him.
Really accurate punching from Spinks but Cooney is one tough mother.
RossKempOnYourMum01 11 months ago
Its hard to see what the threat is that the commentators are saying Cooney brings. Cooney only looked threatening when he battled former top contenders who had their prime in the mid 70s. Of course the irony is that Cooney was crushed by a 70's darling (Foreman) in his next fight. Justice served by Big George. Thank God
NUMBA1PROSPECT 11 months ago
hmm spinks got not so a hard punch! :(
PunisherLobo 1 year ago
I don't think Cooney had a glass jaw, or question his courage, but alas, he was the punching bag of the division. Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Norton, Foreman and even Leon Spinks were Champions at any given time. Cooney was always on the outside looking in.
