This hit by The Chordettes hit #5 on the Top 40 charts and #8 in the United Kingdom. It would finish at #37 for the year, 1956. And the hits are getting bigger.
I actually ENJOY crying on my keyboard nightly, as I investigate the latest uploads designed to pierce the hearts of Boomers. . . and, of course, bemoaning that "they just don't write songs like that any more," [conveniently forgetting my adoration for Doo Wop, hardly a "sensible" genre.]
I was working outside on a very hot day in victoria b. c., sweat pouring down! Along the waterfront comes a handsome dude with his gorgeous girl friend in a long convertable and the radio was blaring out this song. I started to turn green with envy and When I hear this haunting song I`m right back in 1956 slaving away and jealous as hell !!
looking at their Lollipop video...just compare it to the ones we have now, where the chicks are almost naked and kindof agressive lyrics....OMG, what is this world coming to???
I really hope I have fun in high school.... by the way some people past say it, wow.... and I wish I could witness jukeboxes and cheap burgers. Yum.
P.S. Am I the only young person on YouTube, seems like it, add thumbs if you are under 80 years old.
I was 21 years old when I heard this song, coming from a jukebox inside the cafeteria of the local YMCA of Manila, Philippines. I simply loved it.....You know when you like a certain sound of music...you become MESMERIZED by it. It's like a beautiful memory, it's pleasant and soothing. The year was 1956...oh what a year that was. There is no better way to bring back memories.....than music.
"Since I was born to be with you" The whistle part was the worst piece of the song. Couldn't someone have thought about a PICCOLO? There must be an instrument emitting very high frequencies to take the place of a human whistle. THAT would have been quite an IMPROVEMENT. Whoever human did the whistling, he was CHOKING on the wind that came of his WHISTLE. If you listen carefully...you will notice this.
The melody line is very nice and solid. Few artists would release songs like this now. I love the whistle part of this song. Thanks for posting this clip.
I first heard this after returning from Malaya, after serving in the army there. It was the closest to the harmonies of the Fiji army who were with us. I still think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever,. Oh yes there are still some of us old fogies over 70 who are still around and still listening and playing good music. See ya all.
@JGMagoo I did....I quote:.... "In 1956 I was 89 years old!"......You said you were 89 years old in 1956, .....I was only 22 years old in 1956.....hehehehehe.
same here....there's nothing more enjoyable than talking with my dad about when he grew up while we're driving down some old road or hearing my mom tell me about the days :D
If you like this you'll probably like Tompal Glaser and the Glaser Brothers version of "Loving Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again". Siblings are biologically tuned to sing well with each other when they aren't in rivalry mode.
