  • wait you no that you can just use any pencil you no that don't you DON'T YOU

  • ive been waiting for years! and now you finally make this weve been waiting so long and now you make it how could you!

  • Wow thanks, it's helping me a lot!

  • I hate you so much... for being better than us..

  • wich shading technique do u use mostly?

  • I think you should show us how you draw animals. c:

  • The third one's beautiful... :D but the first one has a nice peaceful feeling to it.

  • the last one's eyes look so innocent! *sigh* real life doesnt have these eyes

  • :L lol Mark so predictable!!! I know exactly when u will go into time-lapse, it's funny

  • 1.) Flashbacks 2.) Reality 3.) Dream world .....that's where I'd use these techniques....

  • What kind of pencil is that? It erases very easily off the paper!

  • @JeXsXsXe he said at the begining...

  • @JeXsXsXe i know what hes using for sketch, its a certain type of pencil called HB. theyre AMAZING for sketching, because they erase easily :D you can get them at alot of stores. also using a white stick eraser can help ^u^

  • hinata?

  • @gingetsu154 Miki....from his book... though it does look a little like her, doesn't it?

  • I love you videos, they help me understand where I'm making my errors in my illustrations. Would it be to much to ask of you to check out some of my drawings in some of my videos? If not can you please review them and tell me where I messed up and what can I do to improve them?

  • I can't see the dislike bar. :)

  • Technique three is probably my favorite, but it SMUDGES! Blech!

I usually use technique two or crosshatching.

  • ill combine the 2nd and 3rd style :)

  • could you do a video on drawing glasses?

  • Who thinks this looks like Shiyuma?

  • hey its nicholas wright how do you edit but please sub

  • @ShannonWattsMyName Y'know if you want people to thumbs up your comment you shouldn't start with "but i don't care". Even if people see your videos and you get famous one day you should never be rude. And WE would really appreciate it if YOU cared about what we think of it.

  • @etera2011 I'm sorry , i didn't mean to be rude:( and i do care . ESPECIALLY what you guys think.

  • I stopped shading with pencil because it kept smearing all over my paper so now I use pen to shade

  • If u use pen then you have to use 1 or 2

  • did anyone else hear the buz at 4:14 ?????

  • lol the first one was kinda like how to scribble and make it look fancy

  • The video froze at 8:00 exactly...

  • what pencil do you use on your drawings??

  • somehow they all look like yoshida to me.

    I want to hit them.

  • 08:00 It's called perpendicular

  • 05:32 I'm all for the new INDICATE, how about you guys?

  • 01:42 @markcrilley Actually, I would draw the lines from lower left to upper right as well. I write with my left hand (even though I'm right handed O.o) and since writing in English is from right to left, I am forced to move my hand forward instead of backwards which also influences my drawing as I tend to start from the left instead of the right. I also often compensate by bending my wrist greatly while writing (which often leads to cramps and pains)

  • The school-girl outfit reminded me of Kagome from Inuyasha O_O

  • *sh*t

  • Omg when u bumped the camera I jumped. That scared the heat outta me xD lol

  • Awesome vid too

  • I was so sad when u said #3 was bad when u used mechanics. :( I am a MECHANIC FREAK!

  • @eswarvandanapu There is a mechanical pencil out there, that has the lead of a wooden pencil in mechanical form, I can't remember the name of it though hun sorry, but they are sold in Micheals and should be in other art stores as well.:3

  • @mangaluver2010 Are you talking about lead holders?

  • @SMgrimbldoo I belive so I'm not sure though.

  • thank you very much ;)

  • This is great stuff. I discovered your videos about a year ago, and they've been a tremendous help to my drawing skills. One thing I would like to see is a video on coloring, and shading with colors. A problem I often run into is when I draw in pencil then color, I can never get the colored shades to come out right. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

  • i hope when i grow up i can be an artist like you

  • Six brody's ghost book? OOOOH MAAAH GAAWWD!!!!

  • If one is deadset on shading as in the third example with a mechanical pencil, the best way to go about doing so is to first extend the graphite a bit and then, at an angle, rub it back and forth on a scrap piece of paper. This will create a very sharp point, but will also leave a flattened plane of graphite on one side of the lead, which is much easier to create light circular motions with than a .07mm cylinder of pointed graphite.

This technique is also useful in fashioning a shiv.

  • I like tha first one the best

  • this was uploaded on my birthday heehee :P

  • But ehh someone please tell me , the miki falls girl has really thick lips why not anymore????

  • Noooo tripod fail

  • the third way is very smooth i like it it kinda reminds me of an old Chinese book with the ink drawings of women and so :P

  • Can you please do a video of common mistakes and how to fix them? Cause I think that would really help. Maybe the top 5 common mistakes and how to fix them. That would be great. Thanks!! :D

  • The way I shaid is that I shaid the hair then use napkin and rub over the shaidy parts.

    hope this helps :)

  • that - is - AWEZOME!!!

  • Where do you put all of your drawings that you use to teach us Mark?

  • @RubyJade11 the bin.

  • My 3 year old thinks the tripod part is rather funny ^_^

  • Comment removed

  • nice!

  • i love your drawings, mark. and you are soo cute. :3 <33

  • its another way of knocking down the camera lols

  • i love your voice!!! XD

  • Ha ha ha I laughed so hard at the tripod fail I replayed it like six. Times

  • Thank you for doing this video, it is quite helpful. If you could, would you mind doing a video which shows where shading needs to go with different light directions and how dark shading needs to be in different places depending on light directions? It would be very helpful. If you've already done a video like this, could I please have a link?

  • I've just subscribed to your channel, markcrilley. And I'm very glad I did. You are an amazingly outstanding artist, and your video's are extremely helpful to me. Already, my Manga has improved greatly. I always had trouble with the eyes. But, thanks to you, I am now really good. So, thanks.

  • hey mark can u help me im doing a naruto manga and im want you to do a video on drawing zetsu( :

  • can you please make a video about folds?

  • Where Can I Copy The Ainme Drawin I WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • where can i copy the anime??

  • DO ONE WITH COLOUR PENCILS!! JUST COLOUR PENCILS!! PLEASE?

  • i almost scream when i saw the tripod-knocking fail! lolz XD

  • suggest, its the new indicate people!

    haha

  • when i first watched this, i was "is this miki? something seems off.." then i realized it was the eyes that were different xD

  • Thumbs up if you noticed how he used the word, 'suggest' instead of, 'indicate'!

  • how wonder i can contract you

  • nice

  • alguien que me diga en el minuto 2:34 que lápiz dijo que usaba

  • @pentagono0071 usa dixon oriole 2/hb

  • tripod fail!!!!

  • cool, This is VERY useful ^,^ I do find it funny, I ussually do something between the second and third one then just texture it, blend it, go back over, and finish it... So this helps time-wise XD

  • "I work with what I find 'people'" never thought I'd hear that...

  • God of drawing

  • I used the 2nd one on the hair, the first one on clothes and the third one on skin..:)

  • I don't think I've ever seen too much of the first one, except in realistic/"realism"/real life sketching/sketches... I personally, generally use a slight variation of the 3rd one, but that's just me. I personally love shading, usually, with the exception of a very small few cases where by the time I reached the shading portion, I was ready to throw my sketchbook across the room lol *shrug* :3

  • years i tell you!

  • it's funny how the shirt and the wrinkles are different in each picture

  • 2B pencils rock the shit ^^

  • Hiya Mark I'm left handed ad I find it really hard to shade things and it looks really bad do you have any suggestions that might help or Any drawings I could do that don't have much/any shading?

    Amie x

  • did you go to art college or something like that?

You inspire me you make me want to go out and draw!!!!

  • 7 people use mechanical pencils

  • @nanananikk use hard lead for sketching and light shading. Regular pencils for slightly darker shadings and sometimes sketching. Soft lead for darker shading.

  • Bah... Screw people that make my drawings look like crap... Lol

  • third style of shading shown gives a more realistic visual with more depth compared to the first two.

  • what pencil is the best for shading?

  • for the third one you could use a stump of compressd paper which are avalable at art shops in different sizes

  • that is why sonic in the game has shades i get it

  • when I'm drawing I always end up with a smudged muddy picture. I try to keep my hand off the image but sometimes its hard to do. Any suggestions to help with it? I am left handed by the way.

  • @MooCow354 put a piece of paper under your hand so your skin doesn't touch the drawing

  • @GeoPenta13 Why have I never though of that?!?!? Thanks!!!!

  • this vid rulz for beginners (me) lolz

  • 7 people have mechanical pencils xD

  • @theCalsonic100

7 people can't draw diagonal lines xD

  • @RandomAvatarFan a softer pencil is good if you use smudging but for the style of shading done in this video a hard pencil is more suitable

  • Imho, 2nd one is the best for hair shading, and 3rd for clothes.

  • I like the last one best, but they're all pretty helpful.

  • YOU KICK ASS XD

  • I love his style of drawing!!!

  • your sooooooooo awesome man

    XD

  • Thats the style i will always use forever!!! I love this guy !

btw, you should do a tutoorial on how to do curly vs. straight boys hair :)

  • hey mark can u draw a how to draw anime nose

  • man, your good! XD

  • i didnt nw that u could do number 3 like that so thankz :D

  • I like the 3 one but I would use the 1 for flashbacks

  • I CAN'T DRAW :,((

  • @Mewdudi Hey, me too. Don't worry, maybe we will be able to do this if we practice enough xD

  • @Mewdudi Jo ich weiß.

  • bring back the word indicate!

  • am i the only one that hears that Mark trys to be seriouse? cause if you listen good at his videos you hear a jook whats funny but then he act seriouse again..i think he sould be seriouse and funny :)

  • hi mark, me and my friend are doing like a manga style story, what is the best way to design your own clothing for characters and how do you use charcoal pensils, hope u can help, thanks

  • how do u know were to shade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • can you plse do a tutorial on how to colour you manga in with colouring pencils?

    thanx! :)

  • " I like this still best! I''m gonna use this style all the time, FOREVER!" xD

  • TRIPOD-KNOCKING FAIL! LOL

  • years, I tell you!! LOL

  • i LOVE the texture of the third one, but i like the 2nd drawing the best lol

  • I only noticed their all different at 00:31 OTL

  • you never changed...... :]

  • Yeah, so... How would you ink that?

  • I'm just starting out, so I'm using the first technique. It actually gives my drawings more depth, but the one thing I don't get is how to add COLOR, and still have shading, cuz I don't want all my drawings to be drab gray.

  • @Tracy7173 with colour you use different shades of the colour instead of pencil. you wouldn't shade with pencil if you are colouring over cause it gets all messy but you still use these techniques

  • @Tracy7173 some people shade and actually color OVER the lines used for shading....i am against this method, I use several shades of the same color[coloured leds, paints etc] and work it up that way.

  • @Tracy7173 it would pretty much be the same idea for using colored pencils, most the shading would be the same.

  • @Tracy7173 well use the color for the shading than you can go over the shading with the same color and just lightly shade over the top

  • @Tracy7173 i have read, get out of your comfort zone.. try doing things you're not good at until you're actually good at them.:)

  • @Tracy7173 Sorry, I know it's not as good as getting a reply from Crilley himself, but you can use the same technique with colours. To add shadows you could either press harder with the pencil crayon or use a slightly different colour. Of course, I find that pencil crayons work best with the 2nd or 3rd technique, but it works with the first one all the same.

  • @Tracy7173 easy, draw without the shading, then colour with shading, i dont use colour since i wasnt good at colouring unless i was colouring a 3d model, water colour pencils may be good to use, they worked for me :)

  • finally. shadings gave my drawing some life!

    thanks Mark. xD

  • where do you keep all those drawings???

my room and house is STUFFED with drawings and I am desperate!

Can you give me tips on that?

  • YEARS I TELL YOU!

  • I like the first one, I love kinda scrappy yet awesome sketches, probably better than actual finished artwork.... I guess I'm just weird that way ^_^

  • And the third one is the best,i like that type, rather than just lines lined up together.(not like im saying the work is bad or anything!)

  • I usually 'flatten' a side of my mechanical pencil lead, then use the 'flattened' part to shade,it will be faster this way,but need to be more careful i guess?(for me!)anyways mark can shade better than me!

  • Modeling (3rd) is personally my fav, but I still use toning, and maybe sometimes contour shading.

  • that would make sence why i couldnt shade decently if my life depended on it. first, i was using a mechanical pencil, and second, the way i draw and write is different than most people because my hand is at a wiered angle and at the very tip of the lead of the pencil

  • The tripod knocking fail made me lol xD

I can't pick my favorite!! I like all of them :)

  • Mark, thank you sooooo much for this video! I was using a shading style similar to the third one, but it didn't do as good a job keeping an even tone. Now I have a much better way to do that! Thank you!! -3

  • can u do how to position face shapes with the right neck angle ? Thanks:)

  • who agree's this dude is best , also SUBSIBE ME!!!

  • that is da bomb

  • if the hair was longer that girl would look like Kagome... O.O Cowinkydink!

  • i have a question for you mark umm have you ever wondered what kind of varieties of expressions and eyes can you find in a sketch you make which is looking to a side with a cool pose? lets see like if it is looking down and is standing on a wall how would you describe that and how many things can you find in it like for example what is he thinking or what is it trying to say in that sketch in particular

  • third 1 is the most cool looking

  • please make a tut on the clothing you have right here it would help so much for my upcoming drawings

  • I love using the parallel shading technique. It's so simple. :)

  • One*

  • I like the second me

  • oh i saw brodys ghost at my book fair and i bought it

  • I must say... I don't really know were I'll use 1st one(I have not done any mangas that have flash backs, but I have only done one manga comic sooo...)But I do know that I will be using the 2nd one for shading hair and adding detail to hair and the 3rd one for shading skin, fabric and adding detail to fabric.

  • haha "YEARS I tell you!"

  • wooooooowww!!! you made those books?

  • 3rd is the best!!!

  • i find the first style is good for cloths the second for hair and third for eyes

  • i do the no. 2 style because i'm not good with the details that MATTER and the hair is artificially made through the shading kind of. I also mix the number 3 so that the cloth doesn't look like a pile of hair

  • Mine is kind of a mix of the 2nd and 3rd...

  • circles.really?!

  • @MidgieWoogle Yep. That's how you get the effect of "no direction" in your shading.

  • <
