ok its official... stevie sings at everybody's funeral.... hes going to sing at his own funeral. lol on a serious note this man is the STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its amazing how stevie still has that wonderful voice I watched him sing here at mj's memorial service and at luthers service. I really hope we dont lose him any time soon.
This song was recorded on one of Rev. Cleveland's Cleveland Singers group albums back in the day! Now talking about skin tight harmony that singing group that Rev. put together was big time awesome!!!
That's true. I was there at the Shrine auditorium that day. Stevie said that James sang this song as an intro to a radio broadcast in Chicago when he was a boy. I don't think Kurt new it well enough for Andre's liking...that's an "Old school" move to scoot someone off the bench in the middle of a song (LOL) I remember that event very well.
Right, you are. Andre Crouch knew the arrangement and since it was a throwback tune, Kurt wouldn't have been born when it came out or he was probably not into gospel music at the time. I believe Kurt says that he was a teen before he even start getting into gospel.
It's also funny to me seeing the reaction of Kenneth Ulmer while Kurt is playing. He looks at him every now and then throughout the song, because he know's that Kurt does not know the song well. He signals to him that Andre has come to "rescue" him...I don't think any of the "LA" crew of gospel musicians that were active at the time would have known that song well, if at all. I still have the program from the the service - I'll never let it go.
I was in the choir backing the singers up. I also was the group behind Tramaine Hawkins, Los Angeles Gospel Messengers and I did not get a program. Don't know why the choir didn't get one. Yes, I do see Kenneth Ulmer, my pastor now, beaconing for Andre and Kurt. You know Kenneith Ulmer could have probably played that song. He's old school and from St. Louis area.
That is true, I'm sure. However, Stevie said at the funeral that Rev. Cleveland also used a rendition of the song for his broadcast. I'm not sure if he heard the broadcast in Detroit or Chicago. I just remember him making the comment before he sang. That is why he did the song at the funeral.
yeah, Martha Jean used the song as her intro. She was a mainstay on Detroit am radio for like a bazillion years... I love that song because of her too...even though she talked all over it with her intro lol...
Yo I am from Detroit and I remember Martha Jean the Queen-she would be talking /dedicating the song to people needing prayer-I liked when she would say-"for the misunderstood today..." it was a pretty cool show, but this is the song-you are so correct!! thanks for bringing this up
gnsky, I don't know if you remember how she would drop a dime on the auto workers when ever they got a bonus. They weren't going home and sharing it with the missus...Martha Jean started announcing the dates and amounts over the radio. Auto workers were pissed. hahaha. She was one hundred percent her own woman. This song makes you miss her and her long diatribes.
James did not write the song "Without A Song", it was a popular song recorded by Frank Sinatra that James arranged as a Gospel song...as he did with so many hits back then such as Gladys Knights (You're the Best Thing) and Barry Manilow's (I write the Songs) He was a master at that. :-)
what's the name of this song! please and thank you!!??

The song is called "Without A Song" penned by Reverend James Cleveland. Stevie said he sung it as a kid. Must have been an old song.
