@skljom Could you please explain why on the exact same PC I had Windows 7, used about 550-750MB of ram IDLE* and got about 24-35 FPS in a game called Urban Terror, and when I switched to Ubuntu 10.04 I use about 220-340MB IDLE* and I get about 57-89 FPS in Urban Terror? No you can't, because you are blind. I don't mind if you like Windows, but don't say it's faster if you don't know. Oh by the way, my GPU AND CPU where both overclocked in Windows, they arn't in Ubuntu. Suck it. ;)

that's only a problem with manufacturers who want a non disclosure agreement linux developers have to reverse engineer everything microsoft developers get the documentation not even as big of a problem as it used to be too ati and nvidia intel give out linux drivers now for there new stuff they kinda did that when they figured out if it's reverse engineered they can't control what's done with it

Just one example out of many: My new computer had a wireless network card that was only supposed to support Windows, but I tried it on Linux (Double Boot with Windows). It works better on Ubuntu than Windows 7 on the same hardware (ie drops out frequently in Win 7, but not at all in Ubuntu). I think maybe your info is a little outdated.

I'm a serious Linux user, with three separate Linux computers with different capabilities I designed for differing tasks. In fact, I rarely use anything more than a window manager (like fluxbox or openbox). The GNOME desktop environment, as seen in the Ubuntu demo, consumes more RAM than necessary to have a powerful computer, and the use of Beryl/Compiz only ruins the experience more.

The real question is, do you want to be able to play awesome games or do you want awesome affects that you could get with windows also just have to look. Less stable core yes, but it depends on the distro also, I've had more problems with Ubuntu 9.04 than ever before. It crashes back to login-screen loads of time, much more than 8.10, programs I thought I turned off are still in the running programs etc.. That one is turning out like Windows now :p
You don't really need to use commands at all. For a normal user, all you need is graphical package management in the Ubuntu Store, or the Symatic Package Manager.
Its a lot more user friendly, all the software you need comes with it, and software you may want can be searched in one major database.
In my opinion both of the systems are designed to do diffrent things. I using Windows to creating graphics, writing code of my web pages which I creating. But i testing it on a Debian with Apache, MySQL and other stuff. Why i using 2 PC's. Because it's very easier to run a WEB server on Linux than Windows but creating the gfx and code is easier on Windows. This is my opinion.
I use XandrOS as my primary OS, Its Linux. I recommend it if you are a Windows user. And technically not everything Linux is free. I tend to use money a lot. Because that is a good way to guarantee manufacturer support. But Microsoft is a great company the only problem is they can tend to get a little obsessed with power at times.

you can't use all programs on Ubuntu by using wine. but the most work :D all games work, but not all smaller programs, like Youtube Downloader =(

Unless you use WineTricks script. Use it to install the repositories and DLLs contained in Windows, and Linux will run almost all Windows programs.

The real question is, do you want to be able to play awesome games or do you want awesome affects that you could get with windows also just have to look. Now if linux/ubuntu made an OS that is compatible with windows games and all then it might be better than windows but till then I stick with windows. lol but i am useing ubuntu right now because i still have windows ME and i cant get adobe flash 10 with it or 9 so yeah ubuntu is a good OS but windows is still better game wise and all.

I know all that and I'm using Linux Mint right now happily. My point is though that I'm tired of all these pro-Linux videos only showing off Compiz when there's so much more to Linux.

true but compiz is eye candy attracts people cuz most users dont give a shit if it can run games they just want a sweep os that looks kick ass and they can show off with compiz u can do that not vista so yea. but i get your point ofc theres alot more but people focus on compiz more cuz its eye candy and people love compiz effects

Example: you listen music and you write a text.
So: Multitasking
There are 2 "windows" with different works.
In the DOS, you can do only a command at the same time.
Example: You are coping a file. But you need to delete a file too! You must wait until the copy is done.
So: Monotasking.
becoz windows (now) can do more stuff at same time he need more windows!

but in fact, windows is way less stable then linux. so the question is: why dont people create games for linux cuz it would be more useful. actually, many people dont even know other OS' exist. even if they are programming or listening to music - whatever, they often use windows. thats all about some contracts bill gates made in the past. its about control and money, but not about being useful.
by the way... why not create openGL games? many say its way easier to program openGL then DirectX

Less stable core yes, but it depends on the distro also, I've had more problems with Ubuntu 9.04 than ever before. It crashes back to login-screen loads of time, much more than 8.10, programs I thought I turned off are still in the running programs etc.. That one is turning out like Windows now :p

Sure that Linux is better, but you have to be a real geek to understand/memorize/use all the different commands.
Windows on the other hand, is maybe not so good, but is still suitable for the average computer user.
And they have a full compatibility for games.
Getting win games on linux is so farfetched...

You don't really need to use commands at all. For a normal user, all you need is graphical package management in the Ubuntu Store, or the Symatic Package Manager.
Its a lot more user friendly, all the software you need comes with it, and software you may want can be searched in one major database.

Got a web cam here. Works on XP, but driver is very buggy. Does not work on Vista, no driver. Works on Linux reliably, no driver needed.

In my opinion both of the systems are designed to do diffrent things. I using Windows to creating graphics, writing code of my web pages which I creating. But i testing it on a Debian with Apache, MySQL and other stuff. Why i using 2 PC's. Because it's very easier to run a WEB server on Linux than Windows but creating the gfx and code is easier on Windows. This is my opinion.

I use XandrOS as my primary OS, Its Linux. I recommend it if you are a Windows user. And technically not everything Linux is free. I tend to use money a lot. Because that is a good way to guarantee manufacturer support. But Microsoft is a great company the only problem is they can tend to get a little obsessed with power at times.

:: lol :: it is amazing to see how LOOK orinated we are ! even in computer industry. With all these effects... sometimes you get stuck in just installing a SIMPLE sound card driver ! lol Last time I have spent like 30 hours figuring out how to install US 122 sound card on Linux. But yes, linux is more stable ! you see less blue dead screens. Anyways, I am glad I use linux and at the same time windows for ONLY games.
