  • Fantastic !

  • Sou Praticante de Shotokan

  • @ashleymannix. Oh yes, but watch Kagawa vs Yahara. Yahara may have lost but more than once, their duels ended with blood on Kagawa's face. Perhaps Kagawa's kime was resultant upon beatings from Yahara. All respect to the master Kagawa, however, another super-human Japanese Karateka!!! Osu!

  • This makes me appreciate karate. WKF has been messing around with the whole bushido and most of those competitors are all about flash.

  • There are silly people here on youtube maintaining that JKA is sport karate only, and no longer a "martial" art. If this is "sport" karate, I should wouldn't want to get hit by either of these guys. I'd never see it coming, and may not remember it after having woken up.

  • Excellent control! Amazing...

  • Kagawa win! 100%

  • Excellent fight, I agree it's tragic modern karate's top level competitors don't have enough control to punch properly, or they don't have enough spirit to take one, that's stuff you learn as a white belt. Yamamoto has blood all over his face by the end of this video but Kagawa has been pulling his punches so they aren't devastating.

  • Blink and you miss it...

  • I thought the JKA used the Shobu Ippon in Kumite?

  • @shogunsan21

Right! But the final need 2 Ippon. Like in UFC the TitleFight has 5 rounds.

Great fight!I think the first wazari for yamamoto didn't deserve to be counted.Kagawa uraken (tainosen) should be Ippon - FANTASTIC!.Difficult to see the last two wazari.I think i'd give the 3. yamamoto wazari to kagawa. Why did the referre show kagawaskizami aside?yamamoto kiakuzuki was 10cm away from kagawa's face. For the last wazari from yamamoto i need a slow motion, it looks very close and surely first.

  • @matzumura73 I agree

  • I saw at least 5/6 scores for Kagawa. For me, Kagawa should have been awarded the fight.

  • good fight, but for me Kagawa won. i saw two or three punches that kagawa hit but the referee did not mark.

  • @mehle3 Muay Thai is from Thailand. Hence "Thai".

  • Karate has changed throughtout the years, it has became less stressful and painful. Traditional karate training would be training every joints and every muscle of your body. Conditioning of every part is also essential. The techniques we use now is also very different, for example the mawashigeri or roundhouse kick, we use the flat of our feet to strike wen back then they use the toes of the feet to strike.

  • @ryansai Hmm, we still train with toes, top of ankle, or very end of shin. All three legitimate techniques. I agree training has changed. I also know people who blew out their knees, usually the left one, and had to stop training because of it. I have to say, these older video's generally are better, closer to Spirit of Karate. It is wonderful to look back. Thanks for posting!

  • @ryansai well , i prefer using the instep of our foot to strike rather than the toes . imagine hitting something with your toes . OUCH !

i'm 14 years old , train in goju kai karate do

  • @nandansho...a very good execution of reverse punch has a lesser knockback power but more on knockout power..becoz delivering reverse punch properly it would have a piercing effect (lesser contact area of knuckles) delivering monstrous pain, that has made your opponent knocked away 4 feet becoz of intense pain..

  • 2:31, Perfect!

  • @DMWH you are my hero bro.. karate rules!!

  • perfect contol....That is the stuff a true karateka is made of...Karate no mici

  • Nowadays how many dan ( black belt ) those of them gain?

  • Yamamoto: rocket man.

    Yamamoto: homem foguete.

  • Yamamoto is the best karate fighter of the world!!!

Yamamoto é o melhor lutador de karatê do mundo!!!

  • Kagawa should have won. Was that judge blind???

  • due to a technical advancement i can tell you yamamoto is 5ft 5in and kagawa is 5ft 7in. I ran a special agorithm that i wrote to measure the height of japanese fighters, and it seems to work better on classic clips from yesteryear. enjoy!

  • 5 thumbs down for ibanez1971. One thumb down for every "power" he is smarter than the rest us! .)

  • Yer,no car chases,what a bummer.

  • took a beatin and stil won the fight

  • How tall are these guys? not that it really matters but im interested..

  • They are not that tall.

  • A los jovenes; esto es una demostración perfecta de un enfrentamiento en competición:Karate, no deporte de combate, Karate.En un combate por la vida...es otra cosa, muchisimo más ...mortal

  • Yamamoto: The best karate fighter of history.

Yamamoto: O maior lutador de karatê da história.

  • Kagawa: One of the greatest karate technicians in history.

  • nice

  • Martial arts is also about ETTIQUETTE and RESPECT - both for youself and your opponent.

  • I didn't like it when after Kagawa scored with Uraken, he ran around with his fist in the air.

  • yeap. martial arts is actually all about being modest. tournament or not.

  • i'm sure it was just because he was in hypertension

  • then he has to learn how to control it.

  • Four years later, when he beat Imamura for the championship, his demeanor was completely different.

  • Yamamoto won because Kagawa was deducted 2 points for punching face. You have to have control when going for the face.

  • Yamamoto's face is in a right old mess !

I'm surprised Kagawa wasn't disqualified for excessive contact.

  • it's shotokan.Yamamoto is the winner in this kumite

  • IS IT SHOTOKAI OR WHAT?

    AND

    WHO WON?

  • damm and this is just 20 years ago.. just thinking about how they competed 100 years ago.... probably kill or be killed.. but now these days.. a lot of compitions are horrible..

  • @kenseisato1989 this is not martial arts this is a game bulshit game.. just streit pubnches no power no kicks..karate is bulshit

  • @mehle3

    for you

so have you trained in japan for at least a year and under what school?

  • @mehle3 Apparently you didnt see the blood all over Yamamoto's face, and that is with a serious amount of control...

  • @mehle3 Hahahaha can't quit laughing at your comment. You say there is no power in their punches? They have their whole body weight behind their punches.

A straight punch like that is hundred times stronger than a right hook. When you swing your arm with a right hook, all the mass you have behind your punch is the mass of your arm and perhaps your shoulder. If you strike from your hip, the fastest and the shortest way you have your whole body weight plus the momentum and speed directed forward.

  • @Urbanbarkboat one day you need to fight real fight..when you will get your face fucked up like pussy you will understund karate is bulshit..thats why in japan muay thai more popular then karate

  • @mehle3 to be fair, when you hit with a right hook, you do put a lot of your body weight behind it, as with all boxing punches. BUT as far as assuming that something like boxing is better than karate, that's not really fair. a karateka vs a boxer would def lose if it was hands only, but throw in the feet, or make it a street fight where you can hit the joints? my money is on the karateka. hands+feet > just hands any day

  • @karatefightr15 I disagree, A right hook is executed by twisting the torso using the shoulder as a hinge. The power is centrifically delivered. A straight right Punch in Karate has3 points of bone alighnment where the torso is directly behind the fist. I have thrown reverse punhes that have knocked people off their feet aprox 4 feet back. I have never seen a right hook knock someone off their feet. I agree in Karate vs Boxer on street I've done it in 10 seconds back-fist right cross sweep choke.

  • @kenseisato1989 there are no real competitions left mostly. it's only jump and cry. to sum it up: "modern" bullshit :(

  • @xaven1978

yea, eaven in the olympics they count punches that wouldn't eaven rock a guy.

  • @kenseisato1989 You wrote this some time ago, so I understand if you don't remember your original comment. However, I don't understand your comment about karate sparring today vs. 100 years ago. I participated in a tournament just today, and we easily applied as much power and contact as these two (excellent) karateka here. Believe me, I have the bruises to prove it! ;-)

  • @deosullivan3

i said a lot. not all . i still do believe that most point sparring is washed up. just IMO but when you see really great sparring like this it just shows how beutiful shotokan is. they're not here to rack up points. there here to show that they can kill if it was full contact. that just my IMO

and no i don't doubt you at all

  • @kenseisato1989 Agreed. This is a beautiful display of karate, and a lot, maybe most, point sparring is washed up, as you say. To be quite honest, I don't do a lot of tournament karate, so I can't say more about that. OSU

  • @deosullivan3

amen, just wondering. are you a shotokan or kyokushin pracitioner?

  • @kenseisato1989 Shotokan. You?

  • @deosullivan3

lol i got to train in both styles about several months for each.

  • so its just really tiring to hear people talk down on traditional martial arts when they have no idea what its true purpose is.... does mma teach a deeper meaning rather than to just beat someone to death? it seems like to me that they dont respect others and just want to start a fight.. as to where traditional martial artist respect others and avoid fights because they know what they are capible of doing and they dont and wont brag about their skill...

  • i just dont think that mma people should boast their mouths and talk down on others styles... you dont see us saying that mma is a joke and is for pure entertainment do you? no, because in traditional martial arts it doesnt end at the physical aspect, there is a deeper meaning behind it, like funakoshi said "The ultimate aim of karate doesn't lie in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants; to subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill"

  • yes you are 100% right

but tradional martial artists could learn a little about mma

we never finish to learn. karate do is way of the no violence but its also the way of the continuous learning

  • and besides if someone tried to tackle someone who knew shotokan karate-do then they'd probably get an elbow to the back of the neck.. which is one of the things you can't do in mma.. like i said i have nothing against people who practice mma, but i do have a problem with people who say traditional karate isn't practical or won't work against someone who does mma, or even in a real street situation.. because i can tell you first hand that it does..

  • Please don't ruin an awesome video talking about stupid shit like elbows to the back of the neck negating takedowns. There's a reason why so many of the serious karateka in Japan also have judo training.

  • and do you really think that a smart fighter would get into the rythm for you to tackle them?... no it wouldnt happen, fights usually end up on the ground because people get alot of adrenaline and start throwing anything they can and usually becomes a wrestling match... but thats ONLY IF YOU LET IT.. the aim of traditional shotokan karate is to essentially kill in one blow, so before anyone would have time to think about tackling or throwing punches they'd already be knocked out..

  • see this is why i hate mma assholes... mma is great i have nothing against it.. but i hate when people judge traditional karate-do and compare it to mma.. they say that this is sport.. well kumite is the "sport" aspect of karate.. in the many books ive read about the jka and traditional karate-do jiyu ippon kumite (free sparring) is the ONLY sport aspect of karate... trust me, if a JKA roku-dan fought any mma asshole they wouldnt be bouncing up and down... mma people rely on their "take downs"

  • 花は桜木人は武士

  • Come to our black belt work out. Get ready for leg kicks and some serious pain. I agree though that Okinawa karate IS much different though..evil, nasty, tough bastards for sure. We like to kick and hit trees and we do plenty of locks and throws...its all there in all the shotokan katas. Mr white belt I wish you were in my dojo, I got 10 or 12 black belts breathing down my neck every work out and every work out is a test of nerves & mental endurance where I come from.

  • JKA karate is not Okinawan karate. Or even bares a resemblence to the same roots.

Ask any one of them what the techniques in their kata is meant to be for. Bet they dont have a clue.

    JKA /b/s

At least machido had the balls to do it and won.

    He aint JKA.

  • Better still get any JKA man to prove themselves in mma or against a decent bare knuckle vale tudo fighter. Wont get any takers.

At least machido had the balls to do it and won.

    He aint JKA.

  • IEKUKATAKA

JKA karate is not Okinawan karate.

    It is Japanese karate.

Bouncing about, ippon scoring, hands down,

    competition karate.

Ask any one of them about what their kata is for. They wouldnt have a clue.

  • Right. Kagawa Sensei... He is now an 8th dan. And also The JKS Technical Director for the whole organization. So if you're teling me that MY Technical Director cannot do bunkai on his own katas then you can think again! Have you ever trained with him? I think not. I have twice. And he is AMAZING! The things he can do... And when i have been proudly training with him, he has done bunkai with me. So please, get your facts right before you start assuming things. Osu.
  • Hi

    Your a female? Ok.

Be nice to see the bunkia.

    Ptomsx.

Good to hear you have some good training sessions.

It doesnt matter what you guys say. This form of competition is outdated and pure ippon scoring sword fighting. Bouncing around like that is wide open to a takedown.

But it is good to hear that the training is good

From my new name Mr white belt!!

  • Yes i am a female.

Is there anything wrong with me being a female?

Are you one of those sexist who think that just because a person is female means that they cannot train as well as a male?

    Ergh.

  • Cant see where I said that?

Interesting conclusion you reached based on what I wrote.

I trained a female who beat 2 males in competion. Full contact. So ease up lady

  • Hi all I do judo but would also like to take up shotokan karate just have few questions if anyone can help out,

    Is there throws?

is shotokan a slow learning process or will i learn something first few classes?

I.d appreciate the help as i'm not sure if i should take it up or not.

  • I'm blue belt 2° kyu. Yes, there are some throws, but they are quite dangerous, that's why the throws are tought at high levels.

And be sure that in a couple of year you'll probably be strong enough to partecipate to some of those kumite challenges!

  • It's pretty straighforward and it is actually a quick learning process, but then again it all depends on your quickness level of learning. I've only went about 2 months, I'm still a white belt and I am almost as good as the black belts. It teaches you basic striking techniques, as well as blocking, both have a wide range of techniques, both I find useful in real life fights.

  • shotokan karate is so simple and so onesided that you can win most of opponents there if you are trained man within 1 month.they use only stright punch mostly and one or two kicks all that you can learn within 3 days.of course there are no throws but they use something like throwing without holding opponent.

  • Just try if you really think .... *lol*

  • try what``?u can learn anything even here in u tube but as good u are depends how trained your body is before studing karate!

  • You can't learn anything but in two or three days but a most rudimentary notion of what a technique should look like. It takes about ten years to really get your hips right, and until they're right, nothing else is. If you really think after a few days you've learned a technique, you have some serious reflection to do, and some serious misunderstanding...

  • if you study shotokan as traditional kata form it takes time but if you would study it as sport form it takes 3 days because as you see in this video how many kick or punches you see!no shotokan ways of moving and only tsuki!so this style is just unreal forms of kicking and punching and moving.two kicks and one punch are its real weapons! and they never move like in traditional way they just move!so 80%shotokan is just unreal useless stuff!

  • Karate-do was effective long before modern junk and opinion. It is about killing (not allowed in sports) and maiming (not allowed in sports). The JKA came from those roots as did all current ryu in Okinawa. Karate in America is 98% junk and 2% traditional(authentic). The real study of karate-do is done in traditional schools and with traditional methods. What you are watching is a sport from a traditional system. DO NOT make the mistake of believing this is ineffective. JKA member since '65.

  • aaw

  • Yes,Top shotkan masters like Yahara sensei,Kagawa sensei and many more top shotkan masters are deadly.Kancho kanazawa was challenged in south africa and england by many.Kancho Kanazawa disposed them with ease. There are to many Masters to name.

  • Apparently, they are both highly skilled experts and control their 'deadly' strikes to within 1mm accuracy.......apparently.

  • Cn we agree with the point b4 last?

  • IT's a blood sports

  • Top Shotokan fighters are so fast I sometimes wish they'd fight in slow-motion. :P

  • this is exellent...the punches are really fast..their footwork is amazing..even kicking is a risk because of their speed.

  • this is the karate of 1800...respect for them but now wkf is another think....another speed

  • i believe that wkf has watered karate down and made it more accessible to people. both a good and bad thing. ok they have faster and more techniques, but the faster techniques in wkf would not put an opponent down most of the time, every single blow in jka would drop a man. Good and bad for both styles i think

  • mmmmm...i can assure you that if a wkf national atlete hit me without control i go on ko .....i dont know if the same is for you...see that video(tags: ciro massa ko)..nice to have meet you

  • well anyone could knock anyone out, thats not saying how good they are. The old style is more effective in ending a fight quickly. The newer style is based on how to get more points

  • Yes, and if you watch Kagawa sensei (he's now 48 or 49 years old) and compared him with Junior Lefebvre, you'll see why I prefered prehistoric karate. ;)

  • EXCELENTE

  • kagawa sensei: velocidad, tecnica, postura, versatilidad en el kumite EXCELENTE!!!

  • ci pedro

  • You can kick after a combination I think, but you have to be very good to do that.

  • if u try jodan kick one of these guys they'll punch u before it gets up there...amazingly high quality karate...from an era of great competitors

  • kagawa vs ogura. point proven. ogura goes for a high kick and kagaway slips past to get the wazari

  • All bloodied but still fighting...great spirit.

  • I'm surprised I didn't see any jodan muwashi geri. Both fighters had their hands so low the whole time. Good match, though.

  • They don't need high guards really, they react too quickly to be dealing with kicks.

    Agreed though, great match.

  • Except when they fough Muay Thay guys it was bad for the japanese.

Thats why no one fights like this in K1 , wich is a japanese promotion open to all stand up styles.

  • actually, in the old days when both styles were in their strength, the put the best muay thai fighter against the best okinawan ( i think) karate fighter and the muay thai man got destroyed. thats actually where the story of ryu and sagat comes from in street fighter haha! your right about having to put the hands up, but generaly karate stylists are faster at high kicks so it wasnt just with muay thai in mind

  • I don't agree in k1 gloves are used, but no necessarily that's the main reason. I think it has a lot to do with politics i.e. kyokushin been the more dominant style in that event...I know I seen a video somewhere were there's a group of japanese shotokan fighters that are using full-contact rules and believe me this method of fighting is quite favorable you want to be able to move in and out fast before you get hit.Kyokushin is just like a bulldozer taking hits while giving.

  • Kagawa sensei its only great! Sugoi desu!

  • Saigo no ugoki wa, "slow motion" de minaito wakaranai.

  • Great clip - Thanks for posting it!
