Miller and Ritenour are a great combination, but it would be alot better with Dave Grusin and Dennis Chambers instead of the other 2, not that they are bad or anything.

Wishamf These 3 guys are by far my favorite Lee's,Marcus and George all have been doings this for years. Now a show with Larry Graham and Stanley Clark needs to happen or all together. :-)
@WishamferWould These 3? Umm, the most legendary one here at their instrument is Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, who isn't even MENTIONED IN THE TITLE? How can you leave out Vinnie Freakin Colaiuta?
@PoeticJustice05 Vin Does Not Have a Grammy - Notice Ramsey On the other vid Said Three Grammy winners - he was not getting disrespected at all the whole video is not shown vin got props just not shown
@grooveskin I wasn't referring to the video, I was referring to someone who only commented about the "three" great musicians in this vid. I don't care how many grammy's they all have, Vinnie is more legendary in the drumming community than any of these other guys in their respective instruments, and yes, I'm very familiar with them.
@PoeticJustice05 Thats debatable, esp comparing with Marcus Miller. Theres hardly a bass player that doesnt know who Marcus Miller is, not to mention he has a larger discography than probably any other bass player (except maybe Lee Sklar). Not saying youre wrong, but not saying youre right either.
@toofpick151 . Yea. Great to hear you mention Leeland Sklar. Jackson Brown and Sklar doing acoustic is great. Any info on the bass rig marcus is using would be greeeat
@reeerttrety Right there hes going through an EBS rig. Usually an HD650 with two 410 cabs. He also usually uses a rack compressor, digressor, and a few other effects.
These guys are the original Grusin gang include Dave Valentine Angela Bofile Phylis Hyman Luther Vandross Jerry Hay horn section Sadawo Wantanabe Tom Brown
Remember Vinnie Caliuta. The drums MAKE the rhythm section along with Marcus' superlative bottom-end. Then George and Lee can float on top; like they do here.
Rit and Miller musically melt together like garlic and shrimp. Their history working together goes back decades and it clearly shows in this video. Both of these legendary virtuosos helped create this particular genre of modern music. In particular, Rit's bio is simply staggering - collaborating with everyone from Dave Gruisin to Pink Floyd. His contribution to Miller's "Panther" here is a clear example of why he has been sought after by so many artists over a span of nearly four decades.
Almost in every way but especially in music or any other art form you`re damn right. On the other hand one can have some fun in arguing about things one actually cannot argue about. This is the first time i reacted to a Youtube-comment -I swear !
@mawurgl3 interesting statement. in the end it's all biased because everybody is different and therefore there can not be a hierarchy of individuality
@TheTranslator100 LOL, Lee Ritenour just put out an album called Six String Theory which includes 20 invited guitarists like George Benson, Steve Lukather, Pat Martino, John Scofield, Slash, Neal Schon, Vince Gill, Mike Stern to name a few - out of his comfort zone, geesh! what a silly comment. Rit can jam in any setting. He's just being cordial in this song, tipping his hat and being the ultimate accompanist...Good grief, the level of musical stupidity never ceases to amaze...
@BadSneakers The guy(s) who said he SUCKED here didn't put in consideration things like comfort zone, which was my point.
I was just being euphemistic in saying "out of his comfort zone, as opposed to saying the dude flat-out SUCKED, as some have said here. So in essence, I was going to bat for Ritenour, and even pointed out his superb performance with George Benson in the Wes Montgomery tribute. Fercrissakes, the deficit in grammar and comprehension skills on youtube never ceases to amaze me.
Your affinity to talk out of your ass is beyond laughable.
NOBODY can perform at the same level at ANY setting. Even the greatest players can sound like shit in the wrong situation, and this is a prime example. If Paco De Lucia and Victor (Serranito) Monge can sound off the mark in the wrong scenario, so can Lee Ritenour. I've been on many forums, and the youtube community has got to have the most benighted group of individuals I've seen.
@TheTranslator100 wow, certainly got you riled up. Good grief, what a despicable use of an analogy. Would Paco De Lucia be out of his comfort zone in a flamenco setting??? This is a standard funk-rock piece - one of the many styles Rit is known for!
@TheTranslator100 Good you can ROTFLO while being such a musical numb-nutz! . You just admitted this is one of the styles he's known for, so how, pray tell, is he "out of his comfort zone"?? Look at other live versions of the Panther, most at least 6-8 minutes long, while one is 4 minutes just for "Marcus's solo". They obviously were told to keep it to a minimum, hence, my insightful comment," He's just being cordial in this song, tipping his hat and being the ultimate accompanist." Cheers
@BadSneakers "You just admitted this is one of the styles he's known for, so how, pray tell, is he "out of his comfort zone"??"
What I "admitted" was for being in his so-called comfort zone, as you repeatedly asserted, it sounded quite the contrary.
Dude, the guy is no doubt a great player, but he sounded like shit here - cordial or not - case closed. Everything else is just fatuous blatherings on your part. I'm growing weary engaging someone with comprehension issues - cheers.
@TheTranslator100 More effective in jazz settings? Well, that's your preference and it's agood point about the ver versatile "Captain Fingers.". But to so puerilely state Rit is out of his comfort zone, while playing w musicians he's known for years, is laughable. LAUGHABLE. Check out the CD "Progressions: 100 Yrs of Jazz Guitar." Rit's song "Captain Fingers" is included. Youtube it if you haven't heard it. Seminal melodic, jazz rock.
Puerilely?!? There's no such word as "puerilely." Why don't you keep it simple and use childishly instead, at least you won't look like a blundering imbecile, such as your interpretations of people's comments.
"Check out the CD "Progressions: 100 Yrs of Jazz Guitar." Rit's song "Captain Fingers" is included. Youtube it if you haven't heard it. Seminal melodic, jazz rock."
Very impressive, but how does that correlate with his performance here?!? lmao
@TheTranslator100 "But to so childishly state Rit is out of his comfort zone, while playing w musicians he's known for years.." Ok, feel better? Do you want me to spell "with"? Sorry, it's not a "shit" solo. Lesser minds have de-minded you. Geez. You are a goob, among massive goobs, Captain Goob, to be exact. . Until you somehow you offer some salient proof that Rit is out of his comfort zone, I'll ask you to view the more than 3000 sessions he guitare'd, ranging from Frank to Dizzie to..Goob
'Until you somehow you offer some salient proof that Rit is out of his comfort zone"
Try listening to the video lol
"Sorry, it's not a "shit" solo."
In itself, no, it wasn't a bad solo. But sorry, compared to the Lee Ritenour I've seen with George Benson and other scenarios, it's comparatively off the mark.
"I'll ask you to view the more than 3000 sessions he guitare'd, ranging from Frank to Dizzie to."
@BadSneakers "Would Paco De Lucia be out of his comfort zone in a flamenco setting??? "
Damn dude, read between the lines! Did I say anything about Paco being out of his comfort zone in a Flamenco setting?!?
If you didn't already know, Paco plays in various settings, and his live appearance with Chick Corea performing "Spain" wasn't his most "comfortable" setting, as pointed out my many.
I suggest you peruse all the possibilities before being quick to arrive at a conclusion.

hey guys, do you think you all could watch my bass vids and drop some comments on em? id appreciate hearing your thoughts. ill be posting some more vids, so you can subscribe if you want. ill return the favor. thanks!
People, stop saying that Miller "kicked Ritenour's butt" in this video. This piece was meant to showcase Miller, not Ritenour. Other pieces would have told a different story.
Well said. Real jazz purists can really appreciate that there were four great musicians coming together on what I'd consider to be a masterpiece. They should do a CD together.
if you like miller also see victor wooten, brian bromberg, gary willis, jazo pastorious, stanley clark etc...great playing here, did this song back in first yr uni, very very hard to get groove and feel just right
i think that instead of giving a shit about vinnie whatever, people should agree that marcus miller is obviously the savior of music, sent to rescue bass players and is obviously the second, more soulful coming of larry graham
I keep trying to like jazz but every time it just sounds like people showing off and wanking over there own instrument ! LOOK AT ME ,LOOK AT ME,LOOK AT ME IM GREAT. load of old missmatched egotistical arses .
and i know im going to be slated for my views . but try and whistle the noncy song that you have just listened to. bet you cant
@tiny789 haha you picked like the worst song to leave that comment one, anyone who listened to this song can easily whistle this simple melody. thats what makes this song so genius, they took that very simple melody and evolved it into a complex solo! its very intriguing if you open your ears and actually listen to what is happening. its people like you who encourage mediocrity in musicians these days
@tiny789 In my experience working with other musicians, the ones who opine on those who "wank off" don't have the technical ability to "wank off" themselves...
However, I think he was hardly "outmatched." He was merely out of his comfort zone. I've seen the youtube clip of Ritenour with Benson during a Wes Montgomery Tribute, and he hardly "sucks" on that one.
@TheTranslator100 Agreed. One must also presume that it kinda looks like it's MM's show, he does take most of the spot, so you can't do too much on a guest solo. WHEREAS, as for everyone's comment about the drummer, that guy was the #1 contributer to the song. He set the pace and foundation for everything.
too much talent at the same time. i cant handle it.

i think that instead of giving a shit about vinnie whatever, people should agree that marcus miller is obviously the savior of music, sent to rescue bass players and is obviously the second, more soulful coming of larry graham

@tiny789 you might have saved yourself from sounding foolish had you just said "i guess i just don't get it."

Your really Dumb huh?!?

@tiny789 haha you picked like the worst song to leave that comment one, anyone who listened to this song can easily whistle this simple melody. thats what makes this song so genius, they took that very simple melody and evolved it into a complex solo! its very intriguing if you open your ears and actually listen to what is happening. its people like you who encourage mediocrity in musicians these days

@tiny789 I totally agree!

@tiny789 In my experience working with other musicians, the ones who opine on those who "wank off" don't have the technical ability to "wank off" themselves...

Lee Retenour sucks here , totally outmatched and simply does not belong here with his awful phrasing and sound

@novola1972
I call bullshit on that statement.
paulvienneau 1 year ago
@paulvienneau it was an awesome statement
novola1972 1 year ago
@novola1972 I concur, he sucks "here."
However, I think he was hardly "outmatched." He was merely out of his comfort zone. I've seen the youtube clip of Ritenour with Benson during a Wes Montgomery Tribute, and he hardly "sucks" on that one.
TheTranslator100 1 year ago
@TheTranslator100 Agreed. One must also presume that it kinda looks like it's MM's show, he does take most of the spot, so you can't do too much on a guest solo. WHEREAS, as for everyone's comment about the drummer, that guy was the #1 contributer to the song. He set the pace and foundation for everything.

Really?!? There are some (one in particular lol) here who think Rit can jam in any setting lmao

@colljo560 It's a pork pie hat. It's a jazz concert, not a 19th century industrialists' dinner.
