Bill 50, Bill 19 and the 2008 exemption of high voltage power lines from the environmental impact assessment process are all examples of the Alberta government removing public input on the transmission of electricity within Alberta and south to the U.S.
These lines will promote more coal fired generation and subsidize the development of nuclear with the goal of creating surplus power to sell to the United States. Albertans will pay the cost, the environment will pay the cost, our electricity rates will rise to the price of the last kilowatt of power exported to the USA and the corporations that wanted all of this will be laughing all the way to the bank while Albertans are left holding the bag. I hope that helps clear things up for you Klaus.
Please we are Albertans. We will do whatever our corporate overlords demand of us. Welfare for the rich and capitalism for the poor. It is the Canadain Way
Bill 50 is the single biggest assignment of wealth to corporations in Alberta history.
Government needs to control the pace of economic development so that regulatory processes are allowed to run their course. It is no excuse to eliminate 'critical oversight' simply for the sake of unbridled economic development; that is undemocratic and can lead to economic chaos. Bill 50 will become 'Ed's Folly'.
