  • What I read when I was learning to reload (in 1981) was that attempting to partial size with a full length die was a bad idea. Why? Because what you're doing with this offset ring is failing to resize the bottom 1/8" of the case neck. Neck sizing with the correct die will size the neck all the way down to the shoulder, but do it without setting the shoulder back (increasing case life and accuracy).

  • I have a 300 savage that i would like to take out more often but for $30 a box of 20 i think twice. Would it be possible to resize .308 brass to .300 savage? Ive heard it can be done.

  • I messed this up. Here is the correct version: I know that the should will go up on the brass and you will have to use a FL sizing die to set it back some. I know that using a Fl like usual will you neck length but I don't know if it will effect your neck turning or neck sizing. Will it? But my main question is with this partial resizing technique will it mess up the neck trimming, turning or neck sizing that you have previously done?

  • @fishblade2 No..once the brass is trued up it's just a matter of your sizing technique. You won't need to trim as much but you will want to trim to a uniform length.

  • @ammosmith so just neck trimming will have to be done but not neck turning at all after you have neck turned once?

  • I have been researching some stuff and I read that every so often the neck will go up on the bullet and you have to use the FL sizing die to set it back some. I know that using a Fl like usual will effect your neck length but I don't know if it will effect you neck trimming. Will it? but my main question is if you want to just move the neck back some would this partial sizing technique be the thing to do because if it's going to mess up the neck turning and trimming anyway I don't know the solut

  • I have tried this with my FL sizing dies and it never works like the NS dies do. The neck sizing with FL dies only seems to go down about 1/2 way before engaging the case body. The NS dies can go all the way down with no issues.

  • @winxpman02 This is a method to be able to do more with what you've got. Partial sizing isn't used as much anymore with NS dies out there but it's a good skill you can use to your advantage.

  • @ammosmith I guess in this prospect it would make sense.

  • @winxpman02 I have some reloading books from the 1930's and 1940's that have tons of useful information...even today is applicable.

  • Is partial sizing supposed to lengthen the neck as well?

  • @bjizzle123 No...it only sizes part of the neck and this operation puts less stress on the case.

  • thanks for all your videos Ammosmith. I have the same question as IamSamuelK. I am partial neck sizing with my RCBS full length die on my .30-06 and .204 fired brass. I was told to just back the die out 1/8 to 1/4 turn untill you bump the shoulder back .001 to .002. Why is using a spacer different/better? I am sure it is, and I just don't understand.

  • hi again , my rifle is a cheap mossberg at100 bolt action . my sizing die was set for full length sizing and i just put the spacer on. could i have to much crimp ? with spacer it only moves 1/8 " is this true ? or ? i want you to know i love your videos , and have learned alot. so, thanks for making them.

  • @MrSmitty686 Come over to the website. You can post a image of the loaded round and I can better diagnose what is going on.

  • hi , i do like the videos. i have a question on partial sizing ? i`m loading 30.06 and i used the spacer from my 44mag to 44 spl carbide set , the spacer is 1/8" , after sizing the case i tried to load in rifle and it stuck in the chamber. how do you partial size a 30.06 case without sticking in chamber ? please help .

  • @MrSmitty686 Make sure the cases you're using are cases fired from your rifle. Is it a semi auto? If so partial sizing won't work.

  • im intrigued, but dont yet fully understand, and its kind of hard to word my questions. why not just back the die out by 1/8th of an inch?, is it to keep things consistent. By only sizing part of the neck, would there be a tollerence to how much it must grip the bullet? Think i better watch again. and yes i am just starting out. shot my first 3 shot group of about an inch at 100meters today from my own ammo, it was awsome. Thanks for your videos.

  • It depends a lot on what you're loading for. You can increase or decrease the neck tension as you wish. The nice thing is once you find that sweet spot you're going to shoot great groups and that translates to more fun and satisfaction at your hard work.

  • mr.ammosmith

im looking for a good book of what can a case do to your aiming and shooting ?

    thanx againe
