  • This is not by Vaughan Williams, it is a traditional Irish melody called 'Caisleán U, Néill" collected by Lady Ferguson in the west of Ireland. The words are by Sir Samuel Ferguson circa 1850.

Vaughan Williams did write an instrumental piece called "The Lark Ascending" which is why many people get confused.

  • Thank you so much for posting this song. I can't seem to find the album anywhere except the internet and it's crazy expensive.

  • Vaughan Williams set a number of beautiful traditional songs: this, also of course 'Greensleeves' and, in the Fantasia on Greensleeves he also included the melody of another old song called 'Lovely Joan'. No question of stealing. Beethoven used many folk tunes in his great works. Songs inspire.

  • I could listen to Lynne Dawson for ever

  • Vaughan Williams needs no stolen songs. It is important that we give credit to the anonymous musicians impoverished and often blind who gave us these airs and kept alive a valuable part of the bardic heritage.
