  • bruce lee did this with 135lbs+

  • Very Great Workout but very dangerous Bruce Lee love this workout he also hurt his back one time doing this.

  • Leg raises are better

  • wow...the bar placement is completely wrong...anyone doing this with decent weight will have spinal injuries because there is no muscle where this guy has the barbell...

  • @ttorzzz then where do you put the bar

  • @GovnaBuckingham rear delts

  • Thanks for the effort but you need to explain more regarding the right form. Knees ,distance between feet ,how low to go

  • Bruce Lee almost paralyzed himself doing this.

  • @UnUltimatedLink cause he didn't warm up and stretch properly.

  • were his main exercise when he pulled a 666 deadlift.Pull being the key word there

  • I like all these posterior chain exercises. It feels so good to extend the hips and feel that hamstring pull my upper body up as if it were a nutcracker doll on a string.

    Nice vid.

  • i was waiting for him to rip a fart

  • @shoopdawhooperful for legs try sqauts and lunges and deadlifts for back do the good morning exercise as shown for chest try bench. press decline press and incline press, push ups for arms try bicep curls and tricep extensions and push presses forabs try sit ups, planks leg raises and abdominal machines at the gym you can look up all these exercises on YouTube if you don't how to perform them

  • I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about body building, i just want to become stronger in legs, arms, back and chest and abs so anyone got any good exercises for any of those muscle groups?

  • @shoopdawhooperful biceps dumbbell curls, as heavy as you are comforable with for 4-6 reps, 2-3 sets

  • This guy has no sense of humor, smile a little dude, way too serious lol. But good physique though and good demostrations.

  • Bruce Lee damaged his 4th sacral nerve with this one .. He later said to his students that they dont have to use any weight, just the barbell itself.

  • @Seanbot10 there are some of us, which neither claim being strong, but comment on the vid and other comments just to help others and come to the vid to review the form, immage or whatever thing we want to see of the exercise! ;) peace

  • @Seanbot10 or "they don't know shit"

  • how in the hell did this get put into my recommended vids?

  • is this exercise as effective in the evening?

  • @JessikahAznBabyy LOL That would be "good evening exercise"

  • @JessikahAznBabyy, i lol'd.

  • @JessikahAznBabyy

yes they are called GOOD EVENINGS

  • will this give me a giant ass? i need a giant ass.

  • @lauralikes god bless you, lol. if u want a big butt. do squats, romanian dead lifts, and lunges.

  • @lauralikes

You should do deadlifts and full squats for that. This is more for your hamstrings.

  • @Thrawn369 No, lower back

  • @spmspm1000

Actually it can work either just like the stiff leg and the bent leg deadlift. Keeping bended knees will shift focus from hamstrings to the lower back (the way I do them, wide stance and bent knees, as a deadlift assist exercise with heavy weights) or you can keep knees straight legs closer together and hamstrings will be hit harder.

  • @THESQUATINATOR Okay, I want to do them as an assistance exercise for the deadlift. How wide should the stance be?

  • @spmspm1000

I'm not really the best person to respond to the width of the feet. I'm using wider stance because it makes it easier to keep the lower back arched and tight when going heavier since I'm not overly flexible (and used to have back injury). Common sense would dictate that using the same stance as your deadlift would be most beneficial but tbh I think either way will carry over to deadlift if lower back is a weak point. Maybe someone else got a better answer.

  • @spmspm1000 You can do these in place of deadlifts as the recovery time due to the exercise being less stressful overall, due to less quadriceps/rear deltoid/latissimus involvement.Bill Starr pulled a national record of 666 using 5x5 workouts of good mornings coupled with high pulls for explosiveness and power shrugs for grip/lockout strength.

  • @nachtegaal45 666 good morning?

  • @spmspm1000 sorry mate,was rather tired when I posted.Yes,good mornings haha

  • This is a great exercise for the lower back, glutes, and hams. A good addition for women who want more back.

  • I do 5 sets, 23 reps with 85 lb, but the weight is right on your damn neck at the end of the movement. It's not too comfortable. I tried using towels, or a life jacket, and both, it's a cumbersome exercise. It's hard to support the barbell on your back throughout the whole movement.

  • is this hamstrings, scoobys video states it is

  • @Seanbot10 lol so true.

  • это пампер , не слушайте его!

  • Bruce Lee damaged his back from doing these with an extreme amount of weight and without warming up. He's said that before. If done correctly, this exercise is safe and effective.

  • @cameronalme Yeah, legend has it he did it with 135 and damaged his fourth sacral nerve in his lower back!

  • bad workout.. bruce lee actually damaged his back from doing the good morning exercise

  • I do it with my knees locked and core tight-the hamstrings are targetted big time-in fact i find it more effective than sldl's.You can feel the hammies worked throughout the entire length of the muscle

  • Always do this exercise with a weight you feel comfortable with. Bruce Lee, a super human in terms of physical fitness, broke his back doing this exercise, with a weight that was too heavy for him.

  • how does he do that leaning MJ thing?!

  • does it workout ur ass ? or only lower back

  • @Newbpwng Doubt much for your ass! would work lower back and abdominals

  • @Newbpwng Your gluteul muscles are the prime hip extensors so yes, to what degree, I am unsure?

  • I've read that this was the exercise that broke Bruce Lee's lower back. ;)

  • grt job mate , keep doing it, thanks for tips

  • carlton got jacked!

  • 0PLATE!!! 0PLATE!!! LMAO

  • no this is the guy off of the simpsons who talks like mike tyson.

  • the text is taking up the entire video screen, GJ expertvillage

  • @Seanbot10 or someone just wanting to slag people off . you fat fucking asshole stfu bee arch

  • @Seanbot10 I've been working out for over 6 years and even worked at a gym for a year and I'm here watching this video. It's called a passion, I love scanning these instructional videos for entertainment or finding a different/more effective way of doing said exercises.

Don't assume everyone watching these vids are noobs.

  • i did this yesterday and my back kills now

  • the weight on your cervical spine may not be a good thing, so i use dumbells.

  • hah his voice put me to sleep

  • Flex your lower back? Does this guy even know what the fuck he's talking about?

  • yeah carlton have muscles now

  • a bruce lee exercise...

  • @silentgoodhrm yeah. but he did severely injure his back doing this. so be careful

  • dude your voice should not be in that body i almost fell asleep when you were giving me instructions it's so damn smoothing no homo.

  • Bad choice of phrase with 'flex your lower' back. I would have said 'tense' because spinal flexion is what you want to avoid here, which he does :)

  • This guy needs to stop lifting his chin so high in the bottom position unless he wants wrecked cervical spinal column in a few years

  • @hendrixian1 now we have doctor in the house

  • @VillalobosC9 Is that meant as an insult?... o0 That's just a tip I picked up from Charles Poliquin

  • @hendrixian1 lol did it sound like an insult ?

  • pulled my hamstring doing this in football didnt stretch

  • I love how this is a video about health and exercise, and a McDonald's advertisement came up before the video started. lol Little bit of contradiction huh?

  • It's one of the most dangerous excercises. It can really hurt your back, if you make something wrong.

  • I laugh at the morons giving negative comments. Tell me, why would you use heavy weights for this workout when its for your lower back? Your back is very prone to injury.. i dont see perfect form and complete control with heavy weights happening.

  • @KronicAbuser Maybe because you need to use heavy weights relative to your tsrength levels and rep range to illicit an adaptation (i.e. strength and/or hypertrophy). Of course I agree that form is very important, but theres no point doing an exercise if your not going to overload your muscles now is there? :) Good mornings actually shift more emphasis onto your glut's and hamstrings than lower back anyways.

  • its simbad!

  • fuck this, this exercise is so gay, i wouldnt wana do this,,

  • @yuhcgte It's good for picking the soap up in prison if it slips. Then you'll be able to get back up when a guy tries to jump you from behind.

  • @3litepker OMFG ROFL all over the room.

    That is frickin hilarious.

  • wrong barbell position

  • it's interesting in that you don't see too many people at the gym do this exercise

  • i mean to say when bruce lee was performing this exercise he got injured

  • bruce lee injured his back and was on his bed for 6 months and made it was a permitted injury that he suffered till his death, doctors told him he would never kick again, but he recovered not fully but recovered and became better martial artist

the only reason he got injured his he forgot to do his warm up, so make sure to warm up before performing this exercise

  • @Seanbot10 hahahaha touche

  • I wish all of the "EXPERT"village videos would be removed.

  • I am female, weigh 117 pounds, deadlift 70 pounds once a week. I warmed up for 5 minutes on the elliptical, did 3 10 rep squats and lunges with 2 20 pound dumbbells . Then I did the goodmornings. My 1st 10 rep set had no weights and I felt nothing. I increased the weight to 40 pounds & did 3 10 rep sets Only the last 2 reps burnt. BUT 6 hours later, I started having lower back pain similar to menstrual cramps and it was NOT that time yet. Caution to all, start realllly low

  • @Lola0bajo

    I am 5'3''

  • isnt that the guy from prince from bel air

  • lol they look like twins but the guy youre thinking of is Alfonso Ribeiro..this guy is brad aubry

  • @Golden2Talon if your talknig about carl from fresh prince, i don't think so, but they do look similar.

  • @Golden2Talon Yes it's Carlton how did you guess?

  • @Golden2Talon Oh yeah..it is him..I guess he's into bodybuilding now.

  • @Golden2Talon r0ofllll carlton ?? noo lol

  • @Golden2Talon Fresh prince of bel air and yes it is

  • @Golden2Talon i think it actually is i mean damn he looks dead on

  • @Golden2Talon carlton got buff ting.

  • it's a great lift for lower back, and pretty much one of the very few, if your looking for a stretch then go light, but if you're looking for building strength in your lower back you can get pretty heavy on it safely

  • No amount of semen on the skin of your lower back will improve your strength in the exercise.

  • i would like to concur, sir.

  • well, u can do good mornings as an accessory exercise

  • so is this for the lower back or the legs or core or what?

  • @Seanbot10

some people just like to watch workout vids , and maybe even learn something new :) nobody knows everything

so we don't all fall into one of these categories

Btw: I iz can do 1000000 of those!

and i noticed hes holding his left hand like 0.0001 millimeters further then his right, so this is bad form and hes gonna hurt himself !!!

  • lol, EXACTLY!

  • u havnt got a clue what your talking about pal. this can be done with heavier weight but requires the appropriate conditioning to be able to do it

  • I would be most grateful if you could demonstrate this particular exercise at a more challenging weight. Many thanks.

  • experts say you can achieve great results without a loaded bar

  • damn, he's got a lot of ghetto in his voice.

  • if you think this guy has a lot of ghetto in his voice...you obviously don't know what ghetto is. I wonder how "cracker" in one's voice sounds?

  • @jaraha Retard, it's called accent and not ghetto.

  • hes using a light weight so he can show correct form ..if you dont know what our talking about dont say anything

  • WTF you on about this guy is doing these good mornings with perfect form!!How the hell do you do it?????And what do you mean a Normal weight????

  • he looks like the dude from hip hop abs

  • looks like a barbell to me.

  • guys a question - Which ones better for lower back strengthing - Dead Lifts or Good Morning?

  • Deadlift! :D

  • stiff leg deadlifts

  • Deadlifts, no contest!

  • Comment removed

  • stick to the deadlift. its safe for posture annd form...the goodmorning is not the best exercise if u have little muscles on the lower back.

  • i heard stiff leg good mornings are good for the hams and bent legs works the back more. Dead lift is a more compound exercise so there are more benefits.

  • do u bend ur legs when u bend over?

  • Slightly. Always do a workout that gives you the most muscle burn and least join/tendon/bone pain.

If it doesnt feel right, it must be not right.

  • Is he standing or is he on his knees? or does it matter?

  • you stand up nd bend over slow. they're good for explosive football tackles

  • he's got a slight bend in his knees when he goes down with the weight but stands straight when all the way back with the weight, and yes he is standing

  • He hurt it because he didn't warm up that day I believe, and he was in a hurry so he rushed his work-out.

There is nothing wrong with good-mornings, just be sure to warm-up properly first, and be smart about how you do the lift. Proper form + Proper weight and you should be fine. Personally, I would start very light with this exercise and build up the weight over time.

  • he hurt himself cuz he tried to do it with a really heavy weight i heard anyways

  • haha yea, he did 135, his body weight!! I think he had done that weight before, I'm not 100% on that, but I think it's just because he didn't warm up well enough before-hand.

  • Hi,

i have backpain problems, i'm not sure if i can do that exercise. But is it ok if i start with no weight at all? And with time go progressive in weight? Because i want to train my back muscles to, some ppl tell me that good back muscles are good to prevent back pain. i'm only little bit affraid that this exercise will bring me more pain, or is that temporary?

  • Its always best to start with light weight until you get your form right. There is some soreness from working the muscles, but its very easy to tell that apart from actual back pain. Having a lot of muscle in on the back does help prevent injuries.

  • I really admire the care you exercised in explaining this exercise, and your slow and careful demonstration. That being said, this particular exercise just seems so dangerous. I have back trouble, and I do Rumanian deadlifts and supermans and rhomboid rows, etc. to strengthen my curvy back. It just seems like you could hurt either your neck or lower back with this one. You do it perfectly, but I wonder if other choices are not safer. Not criticizing here. I appreciate the demo.

  • I disagree completely. Average joe/jane doing anything that is core intensive will only cripple themselves in the long run by relying on a weight belt just to move that extra poundage.

  • Yeah you use weight belts at competitions or if the lift is REALLY important. It encourages bad form too. Same with grips, squat suits, lifting gloves etc. Don't use em unless it's important

  • This is definitely a weak spot for people who don't know what they're doing. Thanks for the video.

  • thanks for posting this

  • read about these and they sounded really good, but it also said that its very possible to get bad injuries through it, with only being able to read the steps i wasnt sure if i was doing it right and didnt want to make a mistake and hurt myself.

Nice vid, great that there are people on youtube who are just a few clicks away to help explain different excercises :)

  • do really low weight to get your technique. then put the big boys on. honesty if you just do the bar unless ur like a dwarf or sumthing ull be fine. ur more likey to hurt ur back moving into a new house then messing yourself up doing this beacause with this u put only wat u can do up and thats it

  • thxs again man.........?

  • i cannot say you need a strong lower back. That just isnt the case. Even if your lower back is strong it requires you to still do the movements slow an controlled. You have too be in complete control over the wieght. The amount of wieght is important so if it feels kind of light after you have warmed up then your fine. it will work perfectly.

  • You have to have a strong lower back and hamstrings along with a strong core....I moved up to 225lbs in no time. Just make sure you take your time.

  • Bruce Lee hurt his back trying to do 135 lbs. I believe

  • lmao i saw this kid at the gym a few days ago tryn to do this exercise n he put a 45 plate on each side when he bent over the bar juss rolled ovr his head n slammed the floor ahha

  • lol damn

  • haha man this made me laugh, i saw a dude like my age do somin similar, i was benchin like 40k just to warm up so he gets in the bench next to me after watching me with this smug look and tried to bench 80k it just slowly goes down onto his chest and he couldnt lift it for shit haha i had to save his ass

  • doesnt matter what weight at least u get a workout

  • I think it does matter (depending on your goals)

  • The motion will still be the same with a higher weight, just make sure the weight you're lifting isn't too heavy or else you could risk injury.

  • Too much weight with good mornings can seriously injure your back. It looks like this guy is using about 20lbs bar included. I wouldn't go too much higher than that. If you want to exercise your lower back with more weight than I would stick with dead lifts. It works the same area plus a whole bunch of other things.

  • Comment removed

  • good mornings with heavy weights is always a BAD idea

  • yes--it's best to use a light weight for good mornings. pick the weight you use for your squats, and then take a third (1/3) of that weight for your good morning weight. see if that works.

  • ty heaps

  • thank you!
