The more I think about it, the more I believe Jellyfish came closer than anyone to the genius of the Beatles. After seeing this clip I rest my case. And thats just one of their songs!
Caught them live at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ a loooong time ago. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Such a shame that they were so short lived.
Do you have all of their releases? If you do then u know what I'm sayin. From the heart is correct, I don't think they thought twice about what they put out. Heck, Roger is still doing that to this day. He writes stuff that nobody does. Most guys wouldn't be caught dead doing his type of material. I really do hope he puts out another CD. What's your take on Jason I'm curious to know.
As far as Jason's material, you're right there is a common thread but IMO, it was inspiration and mimicry that drove Jason's sound to sound like Jellyfish.. but I wouldn't even say it was a lot alike just certain characteristics, such as the bass and guitar "sound". His music was way more rough edged and his vocal arrangements... well.. are the dead giveaway. I'd say other than the orchestral(violins!, etc) and vocal work side of things, he sounded more original and less like them.. Andy&Rog!
Great song, but a better version of this video is found if you search for the user "emiamericarecords". Thanks anyway though - Jellyfish was the best!
was lucky enough to these guys at the Hard Rock Cafe in San Francisco when this album came out....there were only 20 people in the place, what a shame.
Actually Jason Falkner played all the Bass parts on "Bellybutton", except on "All I Want Is Everything", "Now She Knows She's Wrong" & "Baby's Coming Back" played by Steven Shane McDonald of Redd Kross.
How sure are you of this. I am aware of McDonald of Redd Kross playing on the record but never knew which one of them played which. If this is absolutely true then thanks. What about guitars, I know Andy is also credited at guitar. How much of it is Andy to Jason's work? Also there was another player who played bass-stand-up?
@cooley23 Maybe you're forgetting "Bedspring Kiss". Those would be my guesses as well. But, how do we both know this for sure. Just have to go with assumption of style and "sound" les there's actual name credits on the songs, specifically Jason is not mentioned. Also you have this T-Bone guy or upright bass player. Hell, it could be Steven McDonald on "King" and several others. We just don't know.
@popnutty I guess Falkner didn't write a note of Jellyfish's music, but to hear his solo material you could swear he did. Good to know there are others that are hopelessly hooked on what I consider "pop". I can pick a hook out of a song a mile away now.
@kipptumor :).... "until the hook can pull the bridge into view".. haa! can you guess where that lyric came from- what song? Just playing... I see what you're saying though. Well according to sources that is, and the fact that they had already signed a deal before Jason came aboard, assuming the material or most of it had already been written. Jason added his touch as well but he didn't write any of the original IDEAS I guess you can say but they all jelled together as one! To be contin...
Yes! Too Much, Too Little, Too Late. THAT is an amazing track - That entire album was like the Sargeant Pepper of the 90's as far as I am concerned. The production is way WAY over the top, and why not. The way that they rebelled against "alternative" by cranking up the "commercial" aspects of music was pure genius, but at the same time their songs are from the heart and proved that it is okay to write SONGS again.
@kipptumor :)(: .. I couldn't agree with you more!! Great comparison along of course, the Beach Boys. Sorry couldn't avoid that one..L.. Yah, in a nutshell Jfish was so different from everyone else, over the top, and it's just quite remarkable given the wide variety of songs they put out in such a short amount of time. I think that fact alone for me has always been another spark to their greatness. You can't really say that about other bands, especially in the 90's and in general...
No, he got really good. he started a band with my brothers girlfriend after he left Jellyfish, called Honey. they kinda sounded like the sundays. he's now a recording engineer in the SF bay area. but your right, he joined jellyfish after the album was recorded. he is however on all the live B sides that they put out on their singles.
Sorry, Eric Dover did not sing backing vocals in Jellyfish. To clarify, he did not sing any vocals on Spilt Milk it was primarily Andy and Roger singing all types of vocals(like usual)with Tim Smith(bassist-most likely minimal on the actual recordings). I just posted this comment on Sextus remake of "That is Why". He sang back-ups only live and on the road and of course played guitar. An actual quote from Tim Smith, "Roger is the mastermind behind our vocals"-printed in BAM Magazine Feb 93'
Actually, that's Andy Sturmer singing here. Eric Dover had vocal duties for Slash's Snakepit, but only did backing vocals for Jellyfish...but both have a great set of pipes...
huh, you're right...all I remember about this band was, that he appeared to be mentioned as he was the lead or something in an article once, but wiki gives you the answer on that one. Either way, this song really suits the story.
Not exactly correct. Eric Dover sang back up vocals ONLY when PERFORMING LIVE not as you put it... "only did backing vocals for Jellyfish", that's a little vague. He had nothing to do with the creative process.
so during the concert with Alice Cooper, he saw me standing in front of the stage, and threw his guitar-pick right at me, and I caught it.
One of the best evenings.
They were late, for that afterparty and wasn't there before midnight, but then they played for 2 hours...great...hard rock café the year of 2000, I think it was.
I remember seeing Alice coopers band, where Eric performed with members from Ratt and so on, a great night, got to meet Calico Cooper, and some of the other members as well, including Eric Dover, who wasn't used to signing autographs...but a great evening. After the crowd left, I still hung out at the bar, talking to some of the people who worked there.

What can I say I have an eclectic taste in music and basically listen to anything except for rap. Can you imagine if Jellyfish and STP ever toured together?
Their music still holds up well today..I still listen to "Bellybutton" a lot, one of my favorite CD's ever...got to see them live a few years ago too!
Great underrated group who produced two great albums. Bellybutton and Spilt Milk. The style of clothes and hair was all the rage in the early nineties, also a touch of 60's retro kitch.

Jellyfish is great and so is this song. But I don't like the video: it's too cheesy. The guys like they are from a boy band or something. And the "Milli Vanilli" -hair just doesn't do it for me.

Great to see I wasn't the only one who loved this band, when I seen them back in 93 opening up for Tears for Fears, I was hooked ever since, this is a great American band for sure!

Yeah "Bellybutton" vs. "Spilt Milk" is like "Star Wars" vs. "The Empire Strikes Back": they're both classics...so no matter which way you go, you're right.
One thing that makes me laugh about this band is that they really are the best band ever, i mean even if you dont like the music.... they're the best band ever, lol

Like all bands composed of musical geniuses they broke up. A reunion would be great, but I don't think it will happen. Roger, Tim, Jason all played together in one form or another after the breakup. Without Andy (the co-founder) it just wouldn't be the same. We need to get Puffy-Ami-Yumi to break up!.. then he might need the money bad enough to get back together and tour :P
jellyfish will always have this song as a time capsule of what they were doing, when and where, but really the focus should be on their music and their brilliant (imo) interpretation of how 60's and 70's rock can fuse in the mind and create a musical phenomenon like this band, gone too soon, but with plenty of great songs to brag about. listen to spilt milk, too. great album, beach boys all over the damn thing, still resonates beauty.

Please do 1 more tour, please. What a band! They would sell out all of the 10,000 capacity halls in about 5-6 hours. Please Andy and Roger.........if nothing else think of the cash.
