Beautiful! I was lucky enough to participate in a Goma in 2005, and it truly touched me! Can anyone tell me the name of the chant in this video? Thanks for any information you can provide!
I saw this just a few weeks ago in Koyasan where i lived at the tempel that holds the ceremony. Amazing, truly fantastic to see and smell in real life.
Thanks for sharing, seeing this brings back memories. Thanks
Hi, Im a Shingon priest. The priest conducting this Goma is Ikeguchi Eikan. He is kind of well known, but has somewhat of a reputation for being a showman. He is a member of the Koyasan Shingon School (a kogi school). Just for the record, the goma is not a fusion of local Japanese religion. As pointed out, the goma (homa) was practiced in India and is also practiced in Tibetan Buddhism today. The goma he is doing is the sokusai goma 息災護摩 (not saito goma).
Shingon Buddhism, Saito Homa fire ritual. This similar to the Saito Homa that is proformed Shinnyo-En. The founder of Shinnyo-en was trained in Shingon Buddhism.
of what region are you talking? india, china, japan? fire rituals originally come from india, and had their couterparts in japan, so what are you talking about?
Not exactly true. There is just Buddhism, as practiced by such organisations as Fo Guang Shan (Taiwanese), Tzu Chi (Taiwanese), Da Bei Si (Chinese) and many more. These are very Buddhist oriented, but of course, they do have influences from Chinese culture.
Why would that be nice? Buddhism is "cultural." This activities you call cultural trappings are part of the religion. They are designated by teachers and holy texts.
Would you like to Americanize it? America is a culture too. It may not be an ancient or noble or beautiful one, but it is a culture.
If you take buddhism out of its original context, it is no longer buddhism. Secular humanism is not buddhism. Buddhism was taught within a Vedic cosmology. There was a very good reason for this.
Seeing the quote from the Pali Tipitaka, are you a Theravadin?
If so, do you think Theravada Buddhism has no 'cultural trappings'? Look at Sri Lanka and Thailand, that would be obvious, although the Sangha is silent.
Buddhism adapts where it lands, so long as it's within the Dharma boundary and what you just watched is from Japanese Vajrayana Buddhism.
It is more insightful and Right Speech when people comment on religious practices differing from their own with prior reading and research.
Sounds like the Fudo myouo mantra during the ceremony (namkasanmanda..) part of the Jizo mantra, and the Kyoumyou shingon at the end if I am correct. Does anyone know the sect? Buzan-ha?

I am not a member of any religion. and I don't like to be. but I like Japanese traditional philosophy.
This ceremony may be Kogi-Shingonshu.
the clothes of Shinghi-Shingon is different from that of Kogi.

This buddhism is Shingon buddhism.
The monk's cloths of Shingon Yellow and Black.

Are you Shingon-Shu? If so, are you Shingi or Traditional?
galen365 3 years ago
Shingi's history started in 1288 so it has 720 years history. of course Kogi has more longer.
3 religious sects of Shingon-shu comprise shingi group. "Shingonshu-Chisan"and"shingonshu-Buzan""shingi-shingonshu".the biggest sect is Chisan-ha(1.5milion people) and Buzan-ha(1.2milion people).

I meant Saisho Homa this is the indoor fire ritual. Saito Homa is the outdoor fire ritual. Saisho Homa is for universal salvation.

wouldn't it be nice if Buddhism is being stripped off the cultural trappings?
sampuna 3 years ago
Buddhism itself carried Indian culture whereever it spread and as long as Buddhism is practiced by people, it will carry with it their culture.

Buddhism + all the cultural trappings...what happens to the Buddha's message of Nibbana?
erm..most culturals practises are going headlong with the Buddha's teaching on right views leading to Nibbana (Brahmajala Sutta)..
well, whatever, not intending to prolong this issue, may you enjoy you form of Buddhism.
sorry if any tension was created ;)
