actually though, I went to Catalina Island and they have a touch tank thing where they take stingrays and cut off their stingers, and you can touch them. They grow back within a few months and they are let go. It's quite fun to watch them though.

I actually love stingrays! I have been to Grand Cayman in 1996 and went to Stingray City as well. There were so many of them (yeah, of course well acustomed to man) that it was even impossible to step a foot on the ground without being afraid of stepping on them. One of them circled around my legs as I fed him, Eventually he sucked my finger cause he mistook it for a piece of fish (I'm glad he didn't like the taste ;-)) ). Cayman Islands are a wonderful place to be!

Although it is amazing to see the stingrays interacting so close with the people, there is always the possibility of being stung by them, simply because they are animals, and animals are UNPREDICTABLE. In SE Asia, deaths have occurred when a rhino went berserk & killed its keeper, a woman tourist was mauled to death by a tiger she paid to take a photo with. Apparently, she stumbled and fell on the animal. In NZ, a keeper was recently killed by a white tiger at Zion Wildlife Gardens.
Apparently Irwin was hovering over the ray he was studying which scares the shit out of them thus provoking an attack. He was just unfortunate enough to receive the fatal blow.

Although it is amazing to see the stingrays interacting so close with the people, there is always the possibility of being stung by them, simply because they are animals, and animals are UNPREDICTABLE. In SE Asia, deaths have occurred when a rhino went berserk & killed its keeper, a woman tourist was mauled to death by a tiger she paid to take a photo with. Apparently, she stumbled and fell on the animal. In NZ, a keeper was recently killed by a white tiger at Zion Wildlife Gardens.

ok its probally because he like messed around wit the stingray because i have swam wit a ton of stingrays in tahiti and sharks and the stingrays just came up to me because i had food in my hand but never stung me...as long as you dont like pinch them or pound your fist into them or step on them u wont be harmed...so maybe the stingray got overwhelmed and yeah....its not there fault they need to be protected...its an animal...let them be ok...they wont harm you though...there really nice animals.

I agree. People are stupid enough to think that they are looking for people to sting, but really it's our fault. We to beaches that are known to have stingrays close o shore, and some one steps on it. I mean come on if you were a little stingray just sitting on the floor, and this 160 lbs. person comes and steps on you, needless to say, you're gonna sting them.
I know for a fact, Steve's death was an accident, and he wouldn't blame them.
