Hardtails are mainly single track and cross country, then you have the quality of you're rig, DOWNHILL has quickly become more extreme with terrain that would wreck a hardtail on it's first run. My opinion would be that to complete, safely, a recognised downhill run with a hardtail would require a lot of control and skill and would definately result in replaceing parts more often and you're frame WILL GET HAMMERED.

@TheNoobB0x Also there is one more very important aspect of the head tube, Its angle. The more "slack" the forks are (pointed out, away from you) the better high speed stability, and better your bike will take rock gardens. However is your bike has a very "steep" head tube (forks are more vertical) your low speed stability will be high.

As for the "size" of the forks, what exactly do you mean by that?

@TheNoobB0x I have been racing DH for 6 years now. I can help you with your questions.

If your getting a frame with a 1" Head Tube, it not a full DH bike. The 3 biggest fork manufactures (Marzocchi, Rockshox, and Fox) only produce forks with a steer tube in 2 sizes: 1" 1/8 and 1.5"

As for the 120mm Head tube, it sounds like that is the length of it. When you are racing you want the bike as low to the ground as possible. So a shorter Headtube will achieve this.

But really, many mountain bike cyclists can handle these tracks, its just that the Pros do it better, quicker and probably have more equipment and experience!

My budget is under £1000 and I'm looking for something that can handle fairly rugged downhill routes aswell as being comfy on the uphills and xc stuff.
