  • Simply the finest player to emerge in recent years.

  • i just jizzed

  • Absolutely extrordinary! I was just melted! I can only imagine him playing with Pat Martino over some really funky modal jazz grooves.

  • incredible. just incredible. Greatest improv ever, no words will ever describe how good this is. Guthrie Govan is a master..he's a god. No one will ever come close to being as good as him

  • Best 1:22 seconds of my life.

  • I saw this guy at NAMM yesterday, he was just walking around like no one knew him it was so odd!

  • @tauntauntots Did he play, and/or did you talk to him?

  • @jonjacquemoud1 No he just was throwing away some trash we even made eye contact and my heart sank haha, I did not want to bring attention to him because it seemed he was rushing. It was awesome though, he is actually really short in real life haha.

  • he just may very well be the greatest guitar player in the world

  • Jesus tired of biblical shit, just changed his way of showing us the PATH!!!

  • wooww...that was sooo tense for me.......

  • Crazy improv = =

  • yeah HE NEVER practices, he just was BORN playing everybody else's licks, techniques, styles... *sarcasm suicide*

  • @AetroyayorteA There was an interview where Guthrie says he doesn't practice, but all he meant what that he doesn't sit at a metronome for 12 hours and play the same lick, he makes his own "fun" exercises to get the technique down so that way its fun doesn't seem like work.

  • WOW!

  • whenever i watch guthrie govan play i start wondering who the @nd best guitar player would be

  • Echos verga los que no les gusta esto!!

  • Guthrie Carlton.!!!!!!!!

  • @jfyjkyujkftjc

    lol k

  • @jfyjkyujkftjc I agree. Will you suck my dick lol.

  • @gabocrblI I'll suck your cock if you will suck mine. It's 9 and a half inches.

  • If music is a gift, he saw through the box and knew he was getting a filddle for christmas, whew

  • The first phrase makes me drool with amazement

  • man this is so trippy.

  • why the hell did i have to watch an adam lambert advertisement to watch guthrie? >_<

  • The great thing about his playing is that he isn't just shredding. Those are beautiful lines that a jazz musician would appreciate. Sort of like he has the soul of Carlos Santana with more chops.

  • Totally awesome!!

  • simply love the groove and guthries style!!!

  • I believe Guthrie Govan is the last generation guitarist. I cannot see how anyone can top his mastery of the guitar.

  • Comment removed

  • maybe guys who don't like this just don't like music ?... I think it's just beautiful...

  • Oh boy he has great timing and taste too

  • @superguitarttimman Bigging yourself up in the third person ain't cool man.

  • guthrie is the most versatile guitarist-a new breed

  • @jimbang Funny too because cynics accuse him of being a typical 'shredder' ??? What? I was watching the video of him with the Fellowship playing "The Chicken" and he breaks into his solo with country chops from freakin outer space. Then when you add his blues and jazz lines into the picture and endless ideas we see what the new types of 'players' coming onto the scene are going to be like. More of them will appear in the years to come.

  • So... who's gonna clean my keyboard now...?

  • i think we can all agree on one thing here.... GUTHRIE IS AWESOME.

  • rewinding back the 18.905.226.434th time, still have faces like this: :) :O :O :) :O

  • non mi sembra che Larry Carlton suoni così... :)

  • no way is this an improv. Its far too good. Even for a song, it is absolutely outstanding. God he is good

  • @superdanlewis

I know it seems impossible for someone to improvise such an epic, but I was right there recording and filming this and he made it up on the spot. I swear to God. I wouldn't swap my job for anything!

  • @bluesjamtracks for gods sake i mean FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!!!! whats is this?? god he is something else but good. *trying to close my mouth and it opens again by it self*

  • @bluesjamtracks There's no way you could possibly know that he hasn't played at least bits and pieces of this at some point before.

  • Comment removed

  • @MatthewLeisher After re-reading the initial Q & A above, bluesjam was simply stating that the track was improvised not composed. But your post is still correct, and all players repeat ideas as well as create new ones at the moment.

  • @bluesjamtracks But he DID have a listen to the backing at least once, no? Please tell me he did...

  • @Nasosdag Actually, it's a Cminor blues progression with a pop/rock beat, he already has ideas for common changes like that. He probably fooled around with the track, or even went over it in his head without the track. Think about it, If he can improvise over 'Spain' (see the video) then this track is easy for him.

  • @jonjacquemoud1 Well he has said many times that he used to transcribe on the train without a guitar. So I should've known better :X XD

  • @bluesjamtracks do you know what setup does he use on this?

just an incredible tone, awesome improvisation

  • @bluesjamtracks i bet you would get guthries job if you could.

  • @superdanlewis maybe more JESUS ^^ with his hair :)

  • @superdanlewis I know what you mean, the man is a genius! I guess this is what can happen to a person when they practice effectively for a long time and constantly learn lots of new music by ear until you've been exposed to so much that music just flows from you. I guess that is the difference between masters and mortals.

  • @superdanlewis I was taught by him for 2 years, trust me, he can improvise stuff like this. The man 'gets' music on completely fundamental level, and it just flows out of him.

  • @WindsOfCreation Hi how much were the lessons? What kinda of stuff did he teach you? or talk about?

    thanks

    Justin

  • @hairlessdog101 Check out for his method creative guitar 1 and 2, amazing bout books, and also u will know what stuff u can learn

  • @superdanlewis It is Guthrie Govan we speak of. This guy is out of this world

  • @superdanlewis Nothing's impossible for Guitar Jesus.

  • @superdanlewis It appears to be impossible to improvise this, but there is a science to the entire thing. Not to oversimplify his [arguably] unmatched talent, but this solo is a combination of licks, playing scales in the key, and mostly Guthrie's amazing technique and experimentation. 5 stars!

  • Wow you should count the times he repositions his pick!

  • Oh the lick at 0:30 - 0:37 is so splendid.

  • Fuck commercials!

  • That fretboard is his best friend

  • Wow! Great playing Guthrie!!

I really dig it! Are you or does anyone know...is he playing through those amps behind him? I see his sound trap on the wall behind him.

    Must be his jamming room?

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak It isn't actually Guthrie playing this. It's the remarkable Tim Halcomb. Guthrie is just trying to play along :-)

  • @SupremeAxeman I'm really hoping this is a joke : D

  • Not the image you usually associate with Essex Man. Genius!

  • wow pretty impressive

  • any idea what key this is in?

  • @IronMaidenMax13 its the key of awesome

  • @CentraljocK which is c minor :)

  • @IronMaidenMax13 c minor

  • Comment removed

  • Want it to go on forever.....

  • Best solo ever, I'm serious!

  • I´m starting to listen to this every day! :D Funkyyyy Fusion :@

  • Even with smoke coming off the fret board, your creativity and attack are still evident and awesome.

  • Okay, this guy's just plain insane. Was this seriously an improvisation? Gosh. XD

  • Easily the best tone I've ever heard on a 'Super-Strat!' He's got it all, never fails to amaze me! Had a discussion with a College guitar-teacher the other day, and mutually agreed that, in all reality, it doesn't really get much more advanced than Guthrie! Haha..

  • I have the weirdest ear boner right now. And yes I don't know how that works.

  • This is the most covered backing track jam

  • He played so fast that his hair time-traveled to old-age grey.

  • The biggest problem with alot of guitarists today is that they think in patterns instead of thinking and singing the notes in the head before playing them. I think that one of Govans secrets is his ear and melodies and music he makes up in his mind milliseconds before he plays when improvising. Even if you shred you can still make up beautiful lines, but you have to practice that alot and break away from patterns.

  • @Acekorv Agree with you 1,500,000% In fact, I've been a guitarist for ten years but I started getting bored. So I picked up a sax and started improvising hearing the notes in advance as you point out. That experience has been so enriching that I've become a way better guitarist thanks to my sax. Sounds crazy but it's true, my ideas are so much more creative now and the great thing is you don't even need to be as technical as Guthrie Govan in order to still be a great melody improviser...

  • @Acekorv Can't agree with you more. I feel myself in that kind of problem. I play guitar with my eyes rather than my ears...

  • First there's insane then unreal then unimaginable and finally there's Guthrie!

  • 119 people are pissed off because he's a better guitarist than they are.

  • Guthrie adopt me please! :D

  • 0:46 hell yeah...

  • my god the groove at 1:02

  • @DAlbertsson

God this is thrilling soloing -- and just one of many "styles" Guthrie can play brilliantly. He's like a jack of all, except he's a master!

  • Dang, why does it have to stop ever...?!

  • he has 1337thousands of views.......... :D

  • the x factor is his pinky, its possessed

  • Good shit!

  • When people speak about having "feel", this is what they mean.

  • just to think that thoes hands which used to work in mc D's are now making the sound im listening to now WOW

  • this man is a guitar Hero

  • awesome like usual!

  • holy shit........ this inspired me to practice even harder. jesus one day i wanna play and feel the music like him :O

  • @metallica4ever2010 bit gay...........

  • @will01r then you sir do not know what its like to play guitar well.

  • oh god...WHERE'S THE REST OF IT?!

  • KILLER

  • 1-Guthrie Govan

    2-Chuck Norris

    3-Darth Vader

  • @john0livetodie Don't let Chuck Norris see your comment

  • okay if guthrie ever watches this video and reads comments i serouisly beg you to start a band with victor wooten!!!!!!!!! it would change this universe!

  • @cbertram11 That would cause a funklear meltdown.. Is the world ready for something that funky?

  • This improv has more creativity than some bands entire discography.

  • @pipealvareztc i listen to jeff loomis s new album and i agree dude

  • @pipealvareztc like coldplay for example

  • @pipealvareztc what he said .

  • And on the 8th day God made Guthrie........

  • @musicman19191 actually on the eigth Guthrie just popped up and God asked 'where did YOU come from?

  • So incredible

  • This guy is amazing player.

  • this video is so fuckin amazing

  • what key is the jam track in

  • @Matt123597 C minor/Dorian

  • his tone either sucks or doesnt suit his playing sounds cold and hollow....could be my headphones...........two soup cans just dont cut it.

  • @noodlesmealey To your taste. I am 100% certain that this is precisely the tone Govan wanted & intentionally dialled in.

  • I get from this guy what I can't get from Allan Holdsworth...

  • does anyone know where the backing track for this is?

  • @shariotoflove You need to buy it from jam tracks dot com. It's like £4ish, but totally worth the money!

  • @xhaavardx i agree, there is actual melody going on here. larry is too progressive.

  • Amazing!! guthrie is the best!!!

  • @WangyWanger lolwhut?

  • @FeedMeForiAmATroII True that. :)

  • Comment removed

  • This is ridiculous, this guy is better then the bests guitrrists!

  • Guthrie is seriously a phenomenal player his improv is out of this world and he keeps getting better and pushing his own limits i admire guthrie hes such a positive source of inspiration and motivation too keep playing guitar =]

  • just saw this guy in burlington vermont with his band for 20 bucks. like 100 people in there, small little stage, and sat like 10 feet from it. it was insane. the planets aligned that night, he played his ass off. got autograph too. can't say enough. best show ever

  • God: I'll grant you one wish

Me: Ok, I wish I had a trillion dollars!!!

God: Money's not the answer to everything, it won't make you better

Me: Fine, I wish I could play guitar like Guthrie Govan!

God: Just let me get my check book out.

  • @CDMC1404

Guthrie is awesome as a technical player. One of the best in the world. But when it comes to creativity, Jimmy Page has him beat! And there's a big difference between being technical and being creative. Also, you must consider that Jimmy Page was way way back many many years ago before all that high tech playing started, but many times he did prove to have an ability to do it. For example, listen to the live version (madison square garden 1973) Live version of No Quarter!

  • @MissBabyCindy you have obviously not taken the fact Guthrie improvises 75% of his work, and his songs : waves, sevens, five , ner ner , slidey boy , jam track bullet blues , and jam track the persuader are creative . listen to those and come back.

Further more guitarist like Ron thal (bumble foot ) and many other elite musicians of our time has quoted Guthrie as being completely able to freely express anything that comes to his imagination , on the spot.and those are monumental words.

  • @MissBabyCindy also check out wonderful slippery thing . one of my favorites .

  • @MissBabyCindy How does a guy who improvises almost everything, seemingly never repeating himself, falls under the category of NOT being creative? And how can you say X is more creative than Y--what are you using as a metric for creativity? Have you analyzed the phrases of the GG and JP corpus of work and compared the incidence of repetition in each of them? Probably not.

  • How the fuck can people talk shit about this guy... they will never touch his skill and musicianship!

  • one of the best!!!

  • What genre is this considered?

  • @FallenQuiet Jazzgasm

  • @FallenQuiet

    rock - blues fusion

  • @kouvpan Jazz Fusion.

  • @Dazzerx

well yeah..he plays jazz too..but in this video sounds more bluesy playing to me...and alsoyou can find many blues influences to his playing... ;)

  • I wonder if this is spontaneous or if he composed the solo before recording

  • @jazz69cat allegedly this is the first take :)

  • @dennoow who said it was his first take ?

  • @MustaphaPiss Well you can always listen to his albums and find out.just cause he is able to play anything doesnt mean he doesnt have a style.Of course many people know him just from his jam sessions in bluesjamtracks and havent listened to his albums.Being able to play in any style with ease and great command doesnt make him style..less...it just makes him....so damn good. Its that simple.

  • Sweep picking at 0.24 so clean

  • i laughed when i watched this. he's so good its making it awkward.

  • Can someone please help me? I don't understand how Guthrie gets away with using the notes at 0:19, I can play this lick but I don't understand how it fits... Musically it works but I don't understand why it does, using notes E, F, F#, G, B, C, C#,D ???? Someone please help.

  • @GuitarMasterGraeme It's called passing tones. You can approach a note in the chord/scale from a note that is outside. This is common in jazz and fusion music. You can watch Frank Gambale,John Scofield,Allan Holdsworth,Shawn Lane,John Abercrombie,Pat Martino lessons for more detail explaining.

  • @AtanasovPetar

    Yeah, passage notes.

    Rock´n ´Rollers don´t know about this.

  • Definitely a player to steal ideas from here

  • Geesh!!!! Everytime I hear him I can't believe it, even though I know he's amazing, each time I hear him it's like hearing how great he is all over again.

  • Scales and Scales. No Soul.

  • @LiamCapt Bullshit and Bullshit, no knowledge.

  • @FreddyVanHalen5150 I agree with you! Thats the problem with him

  • @LiamCapt I was on about you. Guthrie has more soul than any other player out there. You need to get away from the notion that technical players have no soul. His phrasing is fantastic and his note choices are perfect. Just because he does it with more notes than some washed up blues player doesn't mean he has no soul. Stop bashing people with all the talent and just appreciate what he is. He is THE most accomplished guitar player the world has seen. He does everything. And he does it Perfectly

  • @FreddyVanHalen5150 Good Points. i will spend some more time with his music. Thanks!

  • @LiamCapt ??? only he because he plays fast, it doesnt mean he has no soul...most of shredders have no soul, thats true, but guthrie is a genius player, which plays fully with his heart and genius phrasing....

  • @LiamCapt You are joking right? Guthrie with no soul? You MUST be joking... No other way to see it.

  • @LiamCapt Mate you are a walking stereotype. You hear something fast it has no soul...you hear something slow combined with a painful guitar face...its golden. For your information when you play something speedy it creates tension drama and anticipation(last time i checked those are emotions) and resolves much better to a bend sustained note or whatever.I guess classical music has no soul either... there is a whole new world out there besides minor pentatonic and blues scales you know.

  • @Dreamdancer11 You really don't know anything about me, my musical knowledge or the playing styles I like. So you shouldn't presume the "painful face" stuff. By the way, I don't care for that at all. So stop attacking. I also prefer major scales to blues scales. Have a great day.

  • @LiamCapt so i dont know anything about you...but i guess you do about Govan right?I judge you from what you said mate....scales scales..and no soul....from that alone its obvious that you have such a superficial view of things. Its perfectly fine not liking his music...but the ...no soul thing...shows that you are immature(yet more than old enough as your channel suggests).I guess your...musical knowledge didnt teach you anything afterall.......

  • @Dreamdancer11 I guess the only reply to your reply about me being "superficial" and "immature" is simply one you deserve: "FUCK YOU"

  • @LiamCapt Yes you are right...you are not immature...you are full of valid....arguments...lol.
