incredible. just incredible. Greatest improv ever, no words will ever describe how good this is. Guthrie Govan is a master..he's a god. No one will ever come close to being as good as him
@jonjacquemoud1 No he just was throwing away some trash we even made eye contact and my heart sank haha, I did not want to bring attention to him because it seemed he was rushing. It was awesome though, he is actually really short in real life haha.
Scales: Cm7: Cm dorian, Cm penta and penta/blues | Fm7: Fm Dorian and Cm penta/blues | Ab maj7: Cm penta/blues | Gm7: Cm penta/blues | G7#9: Ab melodic minor, Cm dorian and Cm penta/blues!
@AetroyayorteA There was an interview where Guthrie says he doesn't practice, but all he meant what that he doesn't sit at a metronome for 12 hours and play the same lick, he makes his own "fun" exercises to get the technique down so that way its fun doesn't seem like work.
The great thing about his playing is that he isn't just shredding. Those are beautiful lines that a jazz musician would appreciate. Sort of like he has the soul of Carlos Santana with more chops.
@jimbang Funny too because cynics accuse him of being a typical 'shredder' ??? What? I was watching the video of him with the Fellowship playing "The Chicken" and he breaks into his solo with country chops from freakin outer space. Then when you add his blues and jazz lines into the picture and endless ideas we see what the new types of 'players' coming onto the scene are going to be like. More of them will appear in the years to come.
I know it seems impossible for someone to improvise such an epic, but I was right there recording and filming this and he made it up on the spot. I swear to God. I wouldn't swap my job for anything!
@bluesjamtracks for gods sake i mean FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!!!! whats is this?? god he is something else but good. *trying to close my mouth and it opens again by it self*
@MatthewLeisher Absolutely, improvisations are made up from 'motifs' or short melodies of 2 or 3 notes, 5 or 6 notes etc. And, the more of those a player has, the easier it is to mix it up. The ideas come to mind at the moment rather than planning ahead. This seems magical to less experienced players but Guthrie has a boat load of motifs and seemingly endless ideas. And inspite of that, 'all' players repeat licks or 'parts' of licks at some point.
@MatthewLeisher After re-reading the initial Q & A above, bluesjam was simply stating that the track was improvised not composed. But your post is still correct, and all players repeat ideas as well as create new ones at the moment.
@Nasosdag Actually, it's a Cminor blues progression with a pop/rock beat, he already has ideas for common changes like that. He probably fooled around with the track, or even went over it in his head without the track. Think about it, If he can improvise over 'Spain' (see the video) then this track is easy for him.
@superdanlewis I know what you mean, the man is a genius! I guess this is what can happen to a person when they practice effectively for a long time and constantly learn lots of new music by ear until you've been exposed to so much that music just flows from you. I guess that is the difference between masters and mortals.
@superdanlewis I was taught by him for 2 years, trust me, he can improvise stuff like this. The man 'gets' music on completely fundamental level, and it just flows out of him.
@superdanlewis It appears to be impossible to improvise this, but there is a science to the entire thing. Not to oversimplify his [arguably] unmatched talent, but this solo is a combination of licks, playing scales in the key, and mostly Guthrie's amazing technique and experimentation. 5 stars!
Easily the best tone I've ever heard on a 'Super-Strat!' He's got it all, never fails to amaze me! Had a discussion with a College guitar-teacher the other day, and mutually agreed that, in all reality, it doesn't really get much more advanced than Guthrie! Haha..
The biggest problem with alot of guitarists today is that they think in patterns instead of thinking and singing the notes in the head before playing them. I think that one of Govans secrets is his ear and melodies and music he makes up in his mind milliseconds before he plays when improvising. Even if you shred you can still make up beautiful lines, but you have to practice that alot and break away from patterns.
@Acekorv Agree with you 1,500,000% In fact, I've been a guitarist for ten years but I started getting bored. So I picked up a sax and started improvising hearing the notes in advance as you point out. That experience has been so enriching that I've become a way better guitarist thanks to my sax. Sounds crazy but it's true, my ideas are so much more creative now and the great thing is you don't even need to be as technical as Guthrie Govan in order to still be a great melody improviser...
okay if guthrie ever watches this video and reads comments i serouisly beg you to start a band with victor wooten!!!!!!!!! it would change this universe!
Guthrie is seriously a phenomenal player his improv is out of this world and he keeps getting better and pushing his own limits i admire guthrie hes such a positive source of inspiration and motivation too keep playing guitar =]
just saw this guy in burlington vermont with his band for 20 bucks. like 100 people in there, small little stage, and sat like 10 feet from it. it was insane. the planets aligned that night, he played his ass off. got autograph too. can't say enough. best show ever
Guthrie is awesome as a technical player. One of the best in the world. But when it comes to creativity, Jimmy Page has him beat! And there's a big difference between being technical and being creative. Also, you must consider that Jimmy Page was way way back many many years ago before all that high tech playing started, but many times he did prove to have an ability to do it. For example, listen to the live version (madison square garden 1973) Live version of No Quarter!
@MissBabyCindy you have obviously not taken the fact Guthrie improvises 75% of his work, and his songs : waves, sevens, five , ner ner , slidey boy , jam track bullet blues , and jam track the persuader are creative . listen to those and come back.
Further more guitarist like Ron thal (bumble foot ) and many other elite musicians of our time has quoted Guthrie as being completely able to freely express anything that comes to his imagination , on the spot.and those are monumental words.
@MissBabyCindy How does a guy who improvises almost everything, seemingly never repeating himself, falls under the category of NOT being creative? And how can you say X is more creative than Y--what are you using as a metric for creativity? Have you analyzed the phrases of the GG and JP corpus of work and compared the incidence of repetition in each of them? Probably not.
@MustaphaPiss Well you can always listen to his albums and find out.just cause he is able to play anything doesnt mean he doesnt have a style.Of course many people know him just from his jam sessions in bluesjamtracks and havent listened to his albums.Being able to play in any style with ease and great command doesnt make him style..less...it just makes him....so damn good. Its that simple.
Can someone please help me? I don't understand how Guthrie gets away with using the notes at 0:19, I can play this lick but I don't understand how it fits... Musically it works but I don't understand why it does, using notes E, F, F#, G, B, C, C#,D ???? Someone please help.
@GuitarMasterGraeme It's called passing tones. You can approach a note in the chord/scale from a note that is outside. This is common in jazz and fusion music. You can watch Frank Gambale,John Scofield,Allan Holdsworth,Shawn Lane,John Abercrombie,Pat Martino lessons for more detail explaining.
Geesh!!!! Everytime I hear him I can't believe it, even though I know he's amazing, each time I hear him it's like hearing how great he is all over again.
@LiamCapt I was on about you. Guthrie has more soul than any other player out there. You need to get away from the notion that technical players have no soul. His phrasing is fantastic and his note choices are perfect. Just because he does it with more notes than some washed up blues player doesn't mean he has no soul. Stop bashing people with all the talent and just appreciate what he is. He is THE most accomplished guitar player the world has seen. He does everything. And he does it Perfectly
@LiamCapt ??? only he because he plays fast, it doesnt mean he has no soul...most of shredders have no soul, thats true, but guthrie is a genius player, which plays fully with his heart and genius phrasing....
@LiamCapt Mate you are a walking stereotype. You hear something fast it has no soul...you hear something slow combined with a painful guitar face...its golden. For your information when you play something speedy it creates tension drama and anticipation(last time i checked those are emotions) and resolves much better to a bend sustained note or whatever.I guess classical music has no soul either... there is a whole new world out there besides minor pentatonic and blues scales you know.
@Dreamdancer11 You really don't know anything about me, my musical knowledge or the playing styles I like. So you shouldn't presume the "painful face" stuff. By the way, I don't care for that at all. So stop attacking. I also prefer major scales to blues scales. Have a great day.
@LiamCapt so i dont know anything about you...but i guess you do about Govan right?I judge you from what you said mate....scales scales..and no soul....from that alone its obvious that you have such a superficial view of things. Its perfectly fine not liking his music...but the ...no soul thing...shows that you are immature(yet more than old enough as your channel suggests).I guess your...musical knowledge didnt teach you anything afterall.......
Simply the finest player to emerge in recent years.

Scales and Scales. No Soul.

@LiamCapt Bullshit and Bullshit, no knowledge.

@FreddyVanHalen5150 I agree with you! Thats the problem with him
LiamCapt 4 months ago
@LiamCapt I was on about you. Guthrie has more soul than any other player out there. You need to get away from the notion that technical players have no soul. His phrasing is fantastic and his note choices are perfect. Just because he does it with more notes than some washed up blues player doesn't mean he has no soul. Stop bashing people with all the talent and just appreciate what he is. He is THE most accomplished guitar player the world has seen. He does everything. And he does it Perfectly

@FreddyVanHalen5150 Good Points. i will spend some more time with his music. Thanks!

@LiamCapt ??? only he because he plays fast, it doesnt mean he has no soul...most of shredders have no soul, thats true, but guthrie is a genius player, which plays fully with his heart and genius phrasing....

@LiamCapt You are joking right? Guthrie with no soul? You MUST be joking... No other way to see it.

Dreamdancer11 4 months ago
@Dreamdancer11 You really don't know anything about me, my musical knowledge or the playing styles I like. So you shouldn't presume the "painful face" stuff. By the way, I don't care for that at all. So stop attacking. I also prefer major scales to blues scales. Have a great day.
LiamCapt 4 months ago
@LiamCapt so i dont know anything about you...but i guess you do about Govan right?I judge you from what you said mate....scales scales..and no soul....from that alone its obvious that you have such a superficial view of things. Its perfectly fine not liking his music...but the ...no soul thing...shows that you are immature(yet more than old enough as your channel suggests).I guess your...musical knowledge didnt teach you anything afterall.......
Dreamdancer11 4 months ago
@Dreamdancer11 I guess the only reply to your reply about me being "superficial" and "immature" is simply one you deserve: "FUCK YOU"
LiamCapt 4 months ago
@LiamCapt Yes you are right...you are not immature...you are full of valid....arguments...lol.
