I also paint the hardware of all drums painted black, but over time the paint started to fall, I think it's best painting "powder coat", but you proved to yourself that this is not the paint falls of your hardware? as "skilletstix"
Well this is what we did when we repainted the my highschool's drumline drums. Sand the metal parts real good. It was good our rims were prepainted black so we just sanded until it was almost completely chrome. For the stuff the lug goes into, put a Q-tip into the hole so paint doesnt get into it,
do you know if you can refinish them w/out getting rid of the wood grain coming through? like a lacquer? and couldn't you just buy screws online painted just to save time? maybe not the mounts or legs but just the screws
How does this look in person? i want 2 try it but i dont want my drums looking bad haha. does the paint look runny or anything in person? AND WOULD u RECOMEND DOING THIS.
it might not be the most professional way of painting a kit but it looks like it works descent. i wouldnt know because i couldnt watch the whole video. between the hiccuping and the shaky 'blair witch project' shooting its not worth finishing the video to see the result. looks like itll turn out well.
I know it's not the most "professional" way. I totally get that, but the main point of this video was simply to do it very cheap and without using expensive and time consuming equipment. It's just a little home project. It still looks awesome and holds up pretty decently. Just don't paint the lugs cause the paint particles are too big :p
koolies! dont paint tension rods though........ paint particles are way to big. and you shoudl really get hardware powdercoated but i guess that kinda works.....
@Ars0nist87 that's why I taped off the screws so the paint wouldn't get into the part that you screw into. If you just straight paint the whole lug and try to screw it in, it won't work. So don't paint the part that screws into, only paint what shows.
did the paint on the lug screws make it hard for them to be screwed back in? If you did get them back on did the paint strip off after being screwed into the hardware?
Just completely take off all the hardware and if there is a wrap around the drums (most have it glued to the drum) you could peel that off and sand the wood underneath and paint directly on the wood and clear coat it afterwards. Or depending on the drum just paint right onto the outside. Just sand if needed, prime, paint, clear coat.
@gebczynski take off all your hardware, apply a primer, sand it, apply a coat of paint, sand it, paint, sand. add more coats if you want just don't forget to sand it.

2nd advise for whom about to try this...
when you apply clean coat spray. do it layer by layer. take you time
after shaking your clean coat spray paint, your first layer of clear coat shouldn't be
so shiny. let your first layer dried out. then do it your 2nd layer. about 3rd layer, your drum
starts shine. Remember, Do Not Spay thickly at once. you will end up having tear effect or
the melting looking ..

Just for another Tip for whom about to do this.
make sure you shake the any unpopular color and the clear coat spray pait very well.
Very important. Shake them well as the discription on the can.

@Mart1nwalker it really doesn't matter if I did this to a drumset. I sold it the next day and got a whole new kit. So get over it.

If you really want to paint your hardware (lugs, screws, tom legs, ect.) right, you should powder coat it.

Nah its held up pretty good, but it all depends on how you take care of it. And yeah, it is primer, paint, clear gloss
GrantVsMalice 4 months ago
