  • I like the idea but it isn't the best. I'm not one to point a better method but as an idea you could always make a cup from birch bark or a bamboo section< make a fire< place DRY rocks on the fire (Never take your rocks from a stream or they could "explode")< once the rocks are hot pick them up with sticks and drop them into the cup of water. You'd be surprised how quick it boils! Just keep a rolling boil for about 4 minutes to be safe ;p

  • i would have boiled it first, even nasty tasting boiled water is safe, my primary drinking system: my nalgene GI canteen contain a metal(stainless steel) cup at least one and and a stove, which is on my pack(also has chlorine dioxide tablets in) and on my survival waist pack(also has chlorine dioxide tablets in), as hydration is no. 1 even above eating, getting diahreah and vomiting in the wilds is very bad, especially when days away from help.

  • this method it's not safe!!!!

  • I got the shits just watching this lol

  • this vid was hilarious

  • No no epic fail water should never be drunk until the filtration process runs clear and also never use stagnant water.

  • This water had more hi-tech methods used to filter than the water that Haliburton supplies the soldiers in theatre. Sad but true, check it out, no shame in their game.

  • oops-my bad! I left that comment before i saw the whole video! sorry!!!!!

  • once you do this you can also strain it in your shirt which will make it even cleaner. However the best idea is to boil it to kill bacteria. this isnt really the safest way as although it may look clear, it can contain harmful viruses from animal droppings.

  • Where is that forest located? Pacific Northwest? Please reply.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • im not going camping or anything, and im pretty sure I'm not gonna. i randomly decided to look up "how to filter water in the wild" and this came up xD

  • there should be no excuse to not know how to make fire to boil water.....

  • If you are injured and can't start a fire or don't have a container to boil water in, no chemicals...nothing...it's been 3-4 days and you've had no water because you couldn't find any. Now you have water and have to make a choice. Don't drink and die...drink and don't die. You may get sick but you will probably survive. Over 100 years ago a hole was dug nine feet from a poisoned well, the water was allowed to filter in and then consumed with no fatalities. It works as a last ditch.

  • thats funny shit. You will-B doing this the rest of your life . cool very cool.

  • wtf is this, noob survival parody?!?!

there is a flowing body of water right next to him

and he even said towards the end that

he pretty much had no idea if what he

did was good or bad. lol fail

    Goodbye thirst, Hello woodland disease

  • Or you can Keep a water purification kit in your alice pack for just an occassion.

Hey did you know that if you are digging in mudbank you are more likely to get hookworms and parasites from animal feces.

In an emergency wilderness survival situation Locate water (it's everywhere), immediately Build Fire, Fire makes water drinkable, and food edible. You are in a heavily wooded area, you could have drank saturated plant shavings rather than stick your canteen in mud water.

  • Ok I cant believe you did that! Hear is a tip if you dig in the earth around the water and it smells rotten or stale. Leave it alone! Feel free to apply that logic in any aspect of your life I think it will serve you well.

  • ya..... i thing i would take my chance drinking from the flowing parts instead.

  • u should of boild it lol

  • Later that evening Mike had a stomach upset...

  • jajaja good job :D

    but it´s bad idea xD

  • mike, i know you're trying dude but dont make silly comments like a handkerchief will filter some pathogens, it wont dude, the running water you see iscleann than the stuff you drank, that sand bar has probably filtered so much shit out already its a useless exercise, mak sure the sand is sand and not sand ontop of silt, leave the water settle for a while before before filtering it..even if you need to keep moving.behind enemy lines you should carry water purification tabs until you can biol water.

  • Good job Mike

in a hostile environment you may not be able to build a fire to boil your water or you may need to keep moving on.

  • Where's all the constructive criticism? This guy's trying, at least. All these assholes who think they know everything write these derogatory comments. If you already know it all why the hell did you watch the video in the first place? At least this guy doesn't claim to be an expert. Fuk all you assholes. Drink my unfiltered, dehydrated, giardia piss, you cunts. Keep it up MIKE!!

  • they might just be trying to help. if you do not know much about getting water that is safe etc.

look on you tube these keywords "bushcraft" "survivorman" "man vs wild" "bush tucker man" "malcolm douglas". there are plenty more.. just a suggestion. they show how to make a fire even if it is pissing down raining.

  • the "bushcraft" keyword will show many people telling you useful things. just use your intelligence to see what is practical etc..

  • ahhh city kids. *sigh*

  • Good tip & I would boil it as well!

  • Well, after you dig the hole, you might want to let it sit for awhile, then boil it.

  • i think i just would have boiled it to be safe

  • You just mixed all the crap sedimented in there, not a good idea ..not really healthy.

  • dont listen to this guy. he doesnt know shit. a hankerchief will not filter pathogens. he has no survival experience. he is drinking putrid water. if he was in the field he would die of giardia and dehydration. he will only be hydrated for 5 minutes and will be shitting his water out his ass and throwing up from his mouth violently for weeks. this will kill you in the woods. hes a fukin idiot.

  • A tip to help the taste:

Make a filter with a water bottle or tube (poke holes at the bottom) with 5 layers readily found at the campsite:

    1. Grass

    2. Sand

    3. Charcoal

    4. Sand

    5. Grass

(cotton balls or coffee filter at bottom could help, but not necessary).

That will filter out debris and help taste and odor. Run water through before use until water is clear and STILL BOIL IT.

    It has a limited use

  • Cloth, rocks, and sand DO NOT kill pathogens like viruses and bacteria. that can flow into the water from a dead animals, feces, or even bacteria growing on a wet leave or stump from far away. Always boil it or get water treatment tablets or solutions that say they kill pathogens. Boiling is best because tablets don't kill all viruses while boiling does.

  • 2:02 The hankershief should filter out the "Pathogens!!"

    Bwa... ha.. ha...!!! =]

After you chugged that you got yourself a nice belly full of biological organisms which im sure gave you the RUNS for at least a week. =P

  • I like how the word "should" appeared often. Very encouraging for a beginner :)

  • You drank that huh? You rock man.

  • 5 stars

  • its actually not too bad. the charcoal idea is ALWAYS better, and not too difficult, but few microorganisms make their way into water that's been filtered through the ground like that. the fact that the water smelled "rank", however, is probably a sign that there is still organic matter in there. not good drinking.

to help clear up the water, just wait 20 minutes. most of the sediment sinks.

  • are those special forces survial shoes?

  • it should be okay to drink that. :)

  • i mean those methods might get rid of say the bugs/ dirt but i mean what about giardia you can get deathly ill using that method. Why not use a leg from some jeans filled w/ charcoal (ash from your fire), sand, and crushed rock in layers and just let it filter through over a few hours. I mean at least that way the water will be clear and less likely to kill you but oh well.

  • We should send more bandanas to third world countries, to help them get clean water , as stated "it should get rid of all the big debis, pathogens and stuff like that"..

"Its kind of rank, smells sandy, and taste like dirt"..."Should I chug it"....Thanks for the advise looking foward to more....

  • chug chug chug!

moss works the same way. Glad i didnt have to drink it though

  • Let's make clear to everybody that this is NOT the way to do this. You got lucky you didn't get sick!

  • I know it's not exactly the right way, but the point of the demonstration is to say what to do with the bare minimals. You might not be able to boil water, but this is the next best thing.

  • @boomtao If you have nothing else, this will be much better than just drinking it straight up, and infinitely better than not having anything to drink.

  • actually u boil it XD

  • omg! it's just clicked!! you got a deformed head

    nah joke

    5 star vid

  • Nice video

  • hmm, i would let the sediment settle then boil it, but good to see you ok,i would sat you were lucky.

  • i thought about boiling it, but it was just a demonstration, and it was also for entertainment purposes. people love bear grylls cause he eats disgusting stuff. it was the least i could do

  • its not a critisisum just be carefull, just because bear grylls does something, doesn't mean its safe to do so.

  • Hey Mike, did you get sick after drinking this? Cool vids you have by the way; I just subscribed to your account.

  • i was actually fine, yet surprised

  • You missed the last step...put an un-dirty portion of the bandana over it (again) and drink through it...

  • Too funny - your facial expressions and comments to the camera make you the Jeff Corwin of survival shows!

  • That was hysterical! I didn't think you were gonna drink it at all ... and then when you chugged it!! Oi!

  • Right on, Mikey!

  • "smells sandy"

    "tastes like dirt"

    i love MFM
