It's true that there is no compulsion in religion, but once one accepts Islam, it's an obligation for other Muslims to keep him in the Religion. If he declares apostasy, then death is better for him, and he should be dealt with accordingly.
Plus, his apostasy(if he declared it publicly), may be an encouragement for others to leave the religion, and that mustn't happen. Religion is for Allah.
