  • Dude. Dooode. Please, do some research on Google, eh? Pitch down in the front happens regardless of front/rear brake balance or other factors; it's a weight transfer thing.

Regenerative braking is all well and good, but the purpose of brakes is to STOP THE CAR and the Prius brakes aren't doing that. This is not related to driving style, or street conditions, or efficiency, or any other considerations.

The cars simply aren't safe because they don't stop. Oh, well.

  • Are you kidding me? The cars are stopping. They take a fraction of a second to apply the friction brakes when it detects a slip on one of the front two tires. I've had all three generations of prius, and had four in total, and this is the behavior of a vehicle with electric drive components.

There hasn't been any incidents of people who have had an accident as a result of this, and if there is I can guarantee you they weren't practicing safe driving.

  • I know about the weight transfer. That's what I was describing. It's much more present and felt because only the front wheels are braking, and when one slips it really really gives you an uneasy feeling. However, in all reality it doesn't add any braking distance, or hazard. It just makes your heart skip a beat. I know, it happened to me. I just have to be careful to avoid the hazards and drive safe.

  • Driving safe is all well and good, but there's a reason people call them "accidents." The problem with Prius brakes misbehaving is that they make the car unpredictable, which is the worst possible thing that can happen in an emergency. Remember that? "Emergency" stopping? This is why the Prius brakes are getting such bad rap.

  • Nah your totally wrong. There is no problem with them during emergency stopping. A news correspondent on cnn took us for a ride in her prius and admitted that it's only during low speeds and when hitting a pothole or grate. (I have experienced the problem.) It's also only a fraction of a second!

I'm sorry, because I like you and I think of you as a valued youtube friend, but you don't know what your talking about and your just making assumptions based on hyper-media bullcrap.

  • This is a problem not only with Prius brakes. The Ford fusion hybrid, the non all wheel drive escape hybrid, lexus, and other toyota hybrids as well as saturn hybrids and gm are all looking at their brakes because guess what? they all experience the same thing.

However, apparently there is a way they can fix it and make it better. So hopefully they will be able to satisfy the consumers.

  • (Sorry for all the replies.) The problem here isn't us. It's Toyota. They should have done what Ford did and notify the dealerships so they would know what customers were talking about when they complained. Then they should have fixed the problem, released a tsb and not announced it all, and called press conferences. Then it would be fixed with no hysteria. However, Toyota's not as good with PR as Ford... :(

  • Oh,i still remember the "disaster" Ford Explorer in the 1999/2000. Over 250 deceased with that dangerous car. And what about the Ford's fuel tank very dangeorus fitted in a particular position on the back just for to save 15$ some years ago? I think american cars are the worst cars ever made and americans can beat japanese just playng filthy as always. Sorry for my bad english, i'm italian and i live in italy and fortunately there are fews american cars here.

  • It's allright.

  • @UNBOXINGCAR I see. :)

  • @UNBOXINGCAR Sorry to resurrect a year old comment, but I suppose you feel safer in your smart cars then? haha. I would much rather be in a American car.

  • obviously MartyShrader is misinformed and didnt actually read the reports, the brakes stop the car, it just the sensation changes. the key here is the brakes stop the car, its not unpredictable. This happens on every hybrid car, its just the Prius is far more well known.

  • Please point my uninformed self to a web-published report not funded by an automobile manufacturer that I can read and become enlightened.

  • You point me to a article that explains EXACTLY what the brake problem is? NONE of them say what the REAL problem is. I have two priuses and I KNOW what the real "problem" is. I know for a fact the car stops in these situations.
