Poor people and some innocent people are executed here for the same crimes that other people get light prison sentences or no prison. Having hundreds or thousands of people like that in prison (killing people there also) is a problem.

@viktorius89 We have hundreds if not thousands of people like Breivik and there isn't money to try to "cure" them which is highly unsuccessful at best. When these people are released from prison, they kill again about 70% of the time. That's why no one wants them anywhere near them. I don't support the death penalty, but I'm not in the majority here, and to a certain extent I can understand why.

While I must say I agree in principle, if someone killed MY family in a random act of murder, (which happens here all the time), I might think differently. Tax payers shouldnt have to pay to support a criminal the rest of their life. The death penalty should only be for solid cases. There should also be a 20 year buffer for more evidence. You cannot tell me wasting a persons entire life isn't just as bad. They should work in prison to cover their costs and if they are later found innocent they should get back twice the money they earned. Thats also incentive for the criminals to keep their costs low. Maybe act good for less security.

One thing that always amazes me though, is how the supporters of the penalty seem to think of it as the ultimate punishment. Punishment? Reallly? Isn't death, in a way being let off easy? If there was a zero tolerance policy regarding the death penalty murders would decipate by at least half. To say the least, watching this is extremely painful. Leonel Herrera was my great uncle, and this cruel injustice took him away from my family before I was even born. I never knew him, but he lived on through his sister, and my great aunt, Norma Herrera. She refused to let his memory die, and went on to write a book about his ordeals. I loved and admired my tia and her determination deeply, and I find solace in knowing her efforts were able to put my tios soul to rest.
Ok so many people who are executed are probably guilty, but if 1/100 or even 1/1000 or 1 in 10,000 is innocent, surely that's reason enough to abolish the death penalty? The USA has released 139 prisoners from death row after evidence emerged of their wrongful conviction. How many have been wrongly executed is anybody's guess. As for the death penalty, human errors and gaps in evidence cause wrong convictions all the time, and when death is the punishment, theres no making up for it. Side effects like killing innocent or political abuse do not justify seeking some kind of revenge. This prize is too high, even for the most heinos crime. For cases the U.S would seek the death penalty, my country has the possibility of life sentence without parole and for the worst of them preventive custody. Poor people and some innocent people are executed here for the same crimes that other people get light prison sentences or no prison. When these people are released from prison, they kill again about 70% of the time. That's why no one wants them anywhere near them. I don't support the death penalty, but I'm not in the majority here, and to a certain extent I can understand why.

While I must say I agree in principle, if someone killed MY family in a random act of murder, (which happens here all the time), I might think differently. People can escape from prison, some can be released through a legal technicality. I disagree with the death penalty, but not vehemently.

Tax payers shouldnt have to pay to support a criminal the rest of their life. The death penalty should only be for solid cases. There should also be a 20 year buffer for more evidence. You cannot tell me wasting a persons entire life isn't just as bad. They should work in prison to cover their costs and if they are later found innocent they should get back twice the money they earned. Thats also incentive for the criminals to keep their costs low. Maybe act good for less security.

There is such an endless list of things that are wrong with the death penalty, i'm not gonna get into it all. One thing that always amazes me though, is how the supporters of the penalty seem to think of it as the ultimate punishment. Punishment? Reallly? Isn't death, in a way being let off easy? A couple of needles, and consciousness ceases to exist. No life in a crummy prison cell, just nothing. Is it fear of death that's supposed to be the active component of the penalty? Don't get it.

If there was a zero tolerance policy regarding the death penalty murders would decipate by at least half. Yes there would be small amounts of innocents like this being wrongly accused but that alreay happens constantly. and they are put in prison to waste resources in space. If people knew that the second you are convited of murder you are executed, most people wouldnt even put them selves in the situation in the first place. Ok so many people who are executed are probably guilty, but if 1/100 or even 1/1000 or 1 in 10,000 is innocent, surely that's reason enough to abolish the death penalty? At the end of the day, it's an innocent person being executed for a crime they didn't commit. Period.
