This song gives me that same old punch in the gut, stab me in the heart feeling I've gotten from so many ELO songs over the years. Jeff could always bring me to tears and put a lump in my throat.
Beautifully crafted song. Bittersweet. Especially in the second verse, where the great Jeff Lynne sings: "Now I´m left out in the cold/but the story´s far from told/it´s such a lonely world". And to you - jlowry71: I love the video. Brilliant work and great tribute to Lynne and ELO. Harrison was right - "All things must pass", and this song and your video always makes me both sentimental and sad - and happy: The music of Jeff Lynne/ELO, and your video, will live forever.
not heard this one before.but i find it interesting that roy wood,.the founding member of elo is shown in the preview video of this song but it is jeff lynn performing the song
@jlowry71 Thanks for posting this.I have been a HUGE ELO fan for years, but shame on me.I only found out about this song about two years ago. Thanks again.
all the elo´s tracks are a little bit sad and they have a feeling of future nostalgia but all the tracks were the soundtrack of my life ,thanks elo for all those happy moments!!!!
Hahaha... I'm glad someone else noticed the irony in that phrase.
In English, we use "____ as hell" to refer to the superlative (i.e. one of two extremes) of an adjective, e.g. "hot as hell", "cold as hell" "dumb as hell", "smart as hell", etc. etc.
The only variation that makes any sense is "hot as hell", and the rest are just humorous vernacular.
this issimply one of the simplest yet greatest elo/lynne songs and smacks of things to come with the wilburys album! the reason ELO finished was simply due to jeff becoming bored with it all? simple.
I am a Jeff Lynne fanatic. I will never see him live, that is obvious now, but i got the chance to see The Orchestra live in Newcastle, ELO music live, Kelly, Mik, etc, but when i commented this fact on you tube i was slated like some kind of traitor? Queen fans don't go on like this, they are happy to hear the music live again. I would rather see Jeff live, than see Orchestra, but it is never going to happen. So why is it so bad? Isn't this cutting off your nose to spite your face?
ronnie, some ELO fans think ELO II or the Orkestra is great without Lynne. That's OK but Lynne is the genius behind ELO. So, even though they are excellent musicians, good guys, etc., these bands without Lynne to me are like having sex with a raincoat on. Don't believe Lynne will never tour again. He's still a young man.
Well he sticks around it alot. He produces tom petty's stuff now. So who knows he'll get that urge to create like a thirst that cant be quenched. Hes a genius he doesnt have writers block.
This song has a LOT of George Harrison influence in it, in my opinion, which isn't at all a bad thing. LOVE this song!!! Never heard it before I found it here and am so glad I ran across it!!!
I think we all see it in our own way. When I heard this song it spoke to me of a man looking back at something lost and I put that into the video, looking back nostalgically at ELO. If you notice towards the end I take the lineup and gradually reduce it down to where at the end it's just Jeff. Jeff WAS the core of ELO with his songwriting and producing, but at the same time we can't take away from Bev, Mik, Richard, Kelly and the other members' input. I wish they would just get back together.
I guess Lawrev I just see it differently. Look at Lynne's personality. He is a leader and leaders lead. He started ELO with his willpower and took risks and they thankfully paid off. WHen he got tired of massive orchestration he tried new things. The thing that bugs me the most is when people say, "look at the human casualties." That is absurd. I look at the success of many people associated with this genius. They were/are lucky to have the opportunity to have worked with him.
Jeff has admitted that he "lost his way" in the 80s with his love for drum machines and synths. So...look at the human casualties along the way. The only vocalist that sang lead on tour was let go. The drummer, widely known in rock as one of the best, was reduced to playing basic tracks (or the machines did it for Jeff). The string section was canned in late 1979. Jeff turned down headlining Knebworth in 1979. The demise was inevitable. By 1986 ELO live was a shadow of its former self.
I think you make some valid points. Especially the under use of Bevs drumming. Getting rid of the string section was a big mistake IMO as they gave the group so much character.
Hey Getchasumm, still grinding the axe? Lynne wrote hundreds of songs that make millions of people happy. Many of the songs were created after he let some members go when his musical style changed. If you listen to his interviews and bio info he says he was tired of all the work that went into orchestration, plus he always liked gizmos so he got enamored with synths and didn't need all the band members. ELO was always Lynne's project.
Yes, indeed...a very nice song. But it is very similar to other Out of the Blue sessions; in fact, listen to it right after "It's Over" and see what you think.
I have Ticket To The Moon / Here Is The News on 12" picture disc. It's yours if you want it. Seriously. If you live in the UK, preferably near to Brum, we can meet up.
CBS Records wanted a deal that Jeff found unacceptable. It was already starting to feel like "work" in the studio instead of fun while laying tracks for "Balance of Power". Jeff's producing talents were in high demand; George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Juliana Raye, Dave Edmunds, Traveling Wilburys, Beatles Anthology......
I was a huge ELO fan. My only tattoo is the ELO logo, but I think Jeff's best work was achieved in collaboration with his friends. I have listened to the George Harrison album Cloud Nine more than any ELO album.
because Jeff is a selfish asshole. Think thats just MY opinion? Ask Bev Bevan (original drummer) or Kelly Groucutt (bassist from '74 on, they'll say the same thing !!
I love the the little guitar riffs that abound in this song. After every verse or so there's always like a tiny little guitar shtick that jets out. Absolutely wonderful production quality as usual from Jeff.
just stumbled onto this song last night on I-Tunes - bonus song on an old cd - .99 and it was mine! Classic sound - love Jeff! Kind of a "All Over the World" - sound
que bueno es el trabajo insuperable de la electric, viajemos todos a la latitud 88 norht a limpiar nuestro espiritu y ser mejores personas en nuestras vidas. pedropicauuuu.....
I don' believe Mik is on this track. As a matter of fact, it sounds like a Jeff Lynne solo to me. It sounds like Jeff singing and playing everything including drums. Those sound like fake strings. Still a brilliant song.
the thing is that Elo created a sound !!(you can recognize one of their song..)and not many bands hes been capable to do that..and also so many hits...!!!
Wonderful new old song. Adds nicely to ELO's fabulous catalog of timeless music! BTW I purchased 3 copies of the Out Of The Blue special edition with this song as a bonus track!
Jeff comes up with very interesting melodies and harmonies. Perfect song structures, excellent bridges! Very talented artist, indeed. I like them better than Beatles.
I've never been a fan of the Beetles...to each his own, but i personally think E.L.O. sounded better. Jeff Lynne is a very talented guy, and his music could sound many different ways and varied. I've got about 9 cd's and enjoy them all, a uniuqe talent. His hero's may have been the Beetles , but i think he surpassed them.
It has been said that John Lennon informed Jeff that if the Beatles hadn't disbanded they would probably have sounded like ELO. Now, was Lennon being sarcastic? Hmm. John Lennon? Sarcastic? Surely not!
About Lennon--I don't think his remark was sarcastic. I remember reading once that Jeff actually met the Beatles when they were recording the White Album, so they were aware of each other.
I like this song, but I still can't get my head round it coming from the OOTB sessions. As I understand it the song's bare bones were fleshed out recently by JL playing everything, which is why (IMHO)it sounds so awful. Jeff may have been the ELO boss, but when the other members added their musicianship, the end result was always better than this. Listen to Zoom. You'll see what I mean.
Nie słyszałem nigdy tej piosenki.Nie myśłałem ,że są jeszcze nie opublikowane piosenki elektrykow.Elo to moj ulubiony zespoł.Dziękuje za jej wstawienie.
This fantastic group was not created, nor was it maintained at their level of performance by casual effort.
You do not exist as a major player in the Rock & Roll world without a major motivator, of which Jeff Lynne is among the best. I'm not saying that the group was not individually motivated. They were the best in the business. But even the most highly trained military units must have a leader in times of battle.
Latitude 88 North: Correction. It was an unreleased song from the 1977 album "Out of the Blue". I believe this may be a Traveling Wilbury's rendering.
ELO was a collection of the most talented musicians ever to play in a rock band combined with the greatest song writer in modern rock, Jeff Lynne. I have never heard better vocals, strings or precussion from any other group.
Go to the Web Site: CD Universe. They have any CD ELO ever made. Including the CD Titled ZOOM Tour, with the great song "Ordinary Dream". This song "88 North" was actually released in the mid 70's. I didn't hear it until YOUTUBE came along.
Would somebody please tell me how to buy this song, isn't on itunes usa and won't let me use my account on the uk site? What happened to this song being released?
I would love it if Jeff would give Kelly and Bev a call and get the band back together again. I know that the secret message album broke the band apart because of selfishness but I wish they could all get past it. We need an new ELO album in this timeless form.
I'm certain that ELO could make a highly successful comeback if they tried hard enough. This track just shows that they make some great quality songs that would gather a large following in no time.
First of all, there is no "they". This is one guy, Jeff Lynne. Sure he sometimes brings in Richard Tandy to play keyboards but that's about it. The rest are session players. This song is probably completely done by Jeff. You can tell that it wasn't Bev Bevan playing that snare drum. BTW, Jeff already tried a comeback in 2001 with his girl friend Rosie Vella. They tried to book 20,000 seat arenas and could sell hardly any tickets. Then the tour was canceled.
fuck you with your session players. Bev and Mik and Kelly G. were INTEGRAL members of ELO, thrown away like cheap trash by Hitler-like Mr. Lynne. I hate all this Jeff-worshio, ELO were a GROUP !!! Thats not opinion, its FACT !!!!!!
Is this new ? Sounds great ! Maybe ELO can make a successful comeback if they don't try charging $75/ticket for the new concert tour, this time around.
Lynne bought out Bevan's part of ELO in 2000 so don't cry for Bev, I'm sure he made out well. Groucutt was merely a session player who was not part of the orignal trio that started ELO so quit your whining how they got screwed over.
Also notice Lynne and Tandy still work together when ELO started back up in 2001 and I guess that's due to Tandy being loyal to Jeff and not going off in that trash heap of a band named ELO 2.
Jeff wont kill himself, dont worry . Too narccistic, just as Tom Scholz is. It is Bev Bevan and Kelly Groucutt we should worry about. THEY are the ones who have been terribly abused by asshole Lynne!
I forbid Jeff to kill himself - on pain of death! Seriously though, in the highly unlikely event that he would take his own life, I'm sure he'd drag a few people with him.
Jeff better be careful, that his bad attitude towards former members doesnt cause what happened to Brad Delp of Boston, in that the main guy, and a power-mad prick, Tom Scholz, was such a dink, that Brad killed himself!
Have always loved the range of differing songs they have brought out from hard rock to balads. Think 'concerto for a rainy day' from 'Out of the Blue' was outstanding and rarely played on radio. 'Balance of Power', 'New World Record and 'Discovery' brilliant! Wasn't impressed by Jeff Lynne's last release of mainly jazz based, sultry, Nay,- morbid - leaning songs - Com on Jeff, bring out some more instrumentals like 'Concerto' on one side, and some jumping pop on the other!
Well....I really like all of Jeff's work too, he's very talented and has been a musical influence for me since I was 12 years old. I Admire his abilitiwes and really enjoy his accomplishments, but God he certainly isn't.
i love this song specially sad song ,Jeff Lynne is a genious!!!

It has been said that John Lennon informed Jeff that if the Beatles hadn't disbanded they would probably have sounded like ELO. Now, was Lennon being sarcastic? Hmm. John Lennon? Sarcastic? Surely not!
CentralNervous 4 years ago
About Lennon--I don't think his remark was sarcastic. I remember reading once that Jeff actually met the Beatles when they were recording the White Album, so they were aware of each other.

Do u wanna know about ELO? Just listen "out of the blue" which maybe greater than "discovery"

Ya well made video. Terrific!

The Beatles were great.
But, ELO has it as far as good music goes.

i sometimes think myself...maybe Jeff is greater than Beatles? sori Lennon. U know John praised ELO very much.

The voice of Jeff Lynne always makes cry. His voice is not too tough, not too soft, not too melancholy not too romantic, Just GREAT ITSELF.
anotherlennon 4 years ago
ELO is the best band in Rock & Roll period, Jeff is a god. Rap music can suck it.

Oh man, this song is fantastic. That Jeff and his hooks. Genius!!

thanks for a great video. Jeff Lynne is pure genius.

ELO it's a GREAT GREAT GROUP!!!
Radugog 4 years ago
This fantastic group was not created, nor was it maintained at their level of performance by casual effort.
You do not exist as a major player in the Rock & Roll world without a major motivator, of which Jeff Lynne is among the best. I'm not saying that the group was not individually motivated. They were the best in the business. But even the most highly trained military units must have a leader in times of battle.
revolutionpermin 4 years ago
Latitude 88 North: Correction. It was an unreleased song from the 1977 album "Out of the Blue". I believe this may be a Traveling Wilbury's rendering.
revolutionpermin 4 years ago
ELO was a collection of the most talented musicians ever to play in a rock band combined with the greatest song writer in modern rock, Jeff Lynne. I have never heard better vocals, strings or precussion from any other group.
revolutionpermin 4 years ago 2

You're f*cking hilarious, you really are! Why do you care so much about ex-ELO members? And what the hell is a "dink"?
nicnoc1976 3 years ago
I'm certain that ELO could make a highly successful comeback if they tried hard enough. This track just shows that they make some great quality songs that would gather a large following in no time.
TitanDream 4 years ago
TitanDream,
First of all, there is no "they". Then the tour was canceled.
dl1027 4 years ago
fuck you with your session players. Bev and Mik and Kelly G. were INTEGRAL members of ELO, thrown away like cheap trash by Hitler-like Mr. Lynne. I hate all this Jeff-worshio, ELO were a GROUP !!! Thats not opinion, its FACT !!!!!!
getchasumm 3 years ago
Is this new ? Sounds great ! Maybe ELO can make a successful comeback if they don't try charging $75/ticket for the new concert tour, this time around.
mca19580 4 years ago
Lynne bought out Bevan's part of ELO in 2000 so don't cry for Bev, I'm sure he made out well. Groucutt was merely a session player who was not part of the orignal trio that started ELO so quit your whining how they got screwed over.
Also notice Lynne and Tandy still work together when ELO started back up in 2001 and I guess that's due to Tandy being loyal to Jeff and not going off in that trash heap of a band named ELO 2.
HazMatCFO 4 years ago
Look mate, tell it like it really is! Richard Tandy is not loyal to Jeff, he jut kisses Jeff's arse mate!
Now go chew on some whale blubber why don't ya.

Trash Heap? If you don't listen to ELO p2 or Orchestra it's your loss. They are a great band.
dl1027 4 years ago
Jeff wont kill himself, dont worry . Too narccistic, just as Tom Scholz is. It is Bev Bevan and Kelly Groucutt we should worry about. THEY are the ones who have been terribly abused by asshole Lynne!

SUPERB SUPERB

I forbid Jeff to kill himself - on pain of death! Seriously though, in the highly unlikely event that he would take his own life, I'm sure he'd drag a few people with him.
TitanDream 4 years ago
that would be a shame if that happened - forbid it happen
notasilverspooner 4 years ago
Jeff better be careful, that his bad attitude towards former members doesnt cause what happened to Brad Delp of Boston, in that the main guy, and a power-mad prick, Tom Scholz, was such a dink, that Brad killed himself!
getchasumm 4 years ago
why is it that the others have all aged so quickly. yet Jeff Lynn is still recognisable and still looks as he did 30 years ago.

Have always loved the range of differing songs they have brought out from hard rock to balads. Think 'concerto for a rainy day' from 'Out of the Blue' was outstanding and rarely played on radio. 'Balance of Power', 'New World Record and 'Discovery' brilliant! Wasn't impressed by Jeff Lynne's last release of mainly jazz based, sultry, Nay,- morbid - leaning songs - Com on Jeff, bring out some more instrumentals like 'Concerto' on one side, and some jumping pop on the other!

well, as unfortunately we now know, this has'nt been a hit, but what the fuck, the top 40 has no creedence any more, just enjoy!!

I blame big radio for screwing ELO out of the awards and air play they earned...thanks to the Payola of the 70s and 80s they got hosed !
tigerman4 4 years ago
Absolutely brilliant. So did this chart anywhere, or did big radio continue to pump out the standard crap?

Well....I really like all of Jeff's work too, he's very talented and has been a musical influence for me since I was 12 years old. I Admire his abilitiwes and really enjoy his accomplishments, but God he certainly isn't.
