  • this video is bs propaganda from people that have nothing better to do than harass hardworking people. There are regulations in place to to protect the ocean and responsibly harvest fish. Fisherman care more about the ocean than any of these tree hugging wastes of life. They depend on the ocean to survive.

  • I dislike fisherman more after each viewing of these yt overfishing videos.

  • This is true, don't doubt it. I worked on a scallop trawler on the Georges Bank we kept a small % of the thousands of organisms that we brought up.The swim bladders of the fish were ruptured from dragging them up. We illegally kept and sold many fish we were not licensed to take. they called it "shack" and it was bought buy middle men who sold it mostly to fast food suppliers. Raynaudde, the oceans can be fished responsibly and consumers are learning to make purchasing decisions based responsibly

  • Now if the dredgers crushed everything in their path then how come the fish and scallops usually come up fine? How about you welfare parasites stop intruding on men who actually have to work for a living and get a real job.

  • You have the right to belive what you want to belive and thats fine. How did I guess you are a vegetaran. Lucky guess hu. Thats fine to. The fact is, most of you all really don't know what you are talking about. You have no idea what is really going on out there. I don't want to confuse you with any facts. Because i'm sure you already have your mine made up. You don't need to respond because I'm NOT. Peace Out

  • Greenpeace = HIPPIES!!!

  • This is just total bull shit shit. Go on with your bad self tree huger. Fuck you

  • @777mark100 what is fake about this?

  • @1nerdykid They are only showing you what they want you to see. I am a commercial fisherman as well as alot of my friends. And anyone who knows a damn thing knows this is propaganda crap. The tree hugers aren't going to stop untill they save the world. The fact is, the world needs to be saved from most of them. The politicians aren't going to stop untill all seafood is imported. I spend my life on the sea, and I as well as the rest of us knows what is up. That is what is fake about it.

  • @777mark100 Hi! um yea, this is kind of like propaganda. I bet this rarely happens(it does sometimes though). But that isn't the point. The message of these videos are to raise awareness of overfishing. We are overexploiting the oceans, right? You must have saw a decrease in fish catch or some clues that the ocean is not what it used to be. If you are Canadian, you must have heard of the 1992 cod fishery collapse in Newfoundland. Over 40 000 jobs were lost!(continued above)

  • @777mark100 If conservation action had been taken to preserve the fish stocks, then 12% of Newfoundland's population would not have emigrated. I don't think you should be so mean to activists. Not all of us are the same. That would be like saying all fisherman are the same. I am an activist, but I understand the revenue of fisheries, and just stopping fishing would cause even more lifestyle problems. In Africa, local fishermen are starving because of commercial fishing(continued above)

  • @777mark100 Large fishing vessels from other countries are taking all of the fish with their high tech navigation equipment. I hope you can see in my perspective. Just because you're profession is being questioned, doesn't mean you can swear at people. Overfishing is an issue. You can't possibly disagree with that right? I wouldn't take you away from your job if I had the choice. I want to inform the consumers so the demand of seafood slowly declines, and people are less affected by it. Peace.

  • Greenpeace is fighting a pointless war they want to try to stop this from happeneing so pretty much they want us to stop eating fish from our own waters so that have we have to import all of our seafood dou you know that the FDa only regualates 1% of all seafood that gets imported into this country? and it is usua.ly filled with deadly toxins im mean realisticly what is more important food to sustain our population or a couple rocks?

  • Anyone who falls for this crap is just stupid.

  • is it so hard to stop trolling the oceans?

  • 0:47

Swim you little stingray bastard! SWIM!

Not such a tough baddass anymore, are ya? Steve Irwin says "hi!". MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA H HA HA HA HA!!!!!

  • if you don't commercially fish yourself then shut your fuck hole. Dragging and trawling truly are the most detrimental fisheries to marine habitat. But with that said their effect is still marginal, all this sentimental shit is just counterproductive. If green peace wants to petition anything, they should aim towards mandatory "counters" who record by catch. Fish cant survive out of water or under that tremendous weight. Many boats stab halibut bycatch to insure they're not caught again. peace

  • greed makes me SICK omg .. who needs that much f-ing fish??

  • i cried.

  • @grinosean Good then you should have plenty of money to educate us. On second thought maybe you guys could use the money to develope a method of killing youselves with a mass suicide.

  • its tree huggers like you that worry about stuff that no one care about. we HAVE to work to eat and i almost garentee that u have eaten fish b4! we have bigger problems in this world. some people would kill to eat any of te things pulled up, THATS what we need to b worrying about!!! and o by the way we americans dont fish coral reefs what the other countries do should haave no meaning 2 us!!! whatever...treee huggers will help the fish aand regular people will worry about important things!

  • @turtleloverfan66

"tree hugger" ... 1 of the most noble compliments anyone can receive!

Regarding what may or may not have eaten/consumed in the past is pointless... What 's being done right NOW decides the FUTURE.

  • @julesrs007 I love sea turtles also, with potatos and onions, YUMMY.

  • What about the trawling with cientific porpouses?? Most tof the discoveries abour deep sea creatures have been made by accident. I am not against censervation or giving a helping hand to mother nature, but as a biologist specialized in deep sea echinoderms I understan also the importance of each sample. We can not take care of a environment that we don't understand.

  • 台灣也是這樣捕魚的......唉

  • n that y i hate seafood but i love helping animal :)

  • FU**ING HIPPIES. it must be nice up there on your platform, eh?

  • Greenpeace should get up off there ass and educate us on how we should fish. Take some of your money and develope ways that do not harm the bottom instead of paying yourselfs. NON profits suck its just a way to funnel in money to line your pockets

  • where in the world do they taking all craps from,i have been working on trawelers for many years,

and i have also been working on reaserch for fishing,

    this is bullshitt,

and if its like this they will try to stop trawlers ,

    by serving lies ,

but there its one thing they shoud have done ,that was to set a limit for the tonage of the ship,

the ship shoudnt be larger then 250 tons ,than everyone hade survive ,and price will stay good ,and there will be no overfishing

  • I agree that trawling is destructive but how the hell is clear cutting destructive? Forest fires are a vital part in the natural succession of a forest. It allows for the regeneration of a young forest which can be utilized by far more species than a mature stand. Clear cutting mimics the affects of a forest fire and tress have no problem growing back in these areas. When they clear these areas they do leave enough surrounding forest to support wildlife. I could go on but i'm out of room...

  • @gullage Although clear cutting and burning does help certain species, it does NOT help regenerate all. There are a multitude of slow-growing hardwoods that have a difficult time coming back after a fire, and after a clear cut it can take several decades to get them to any considerable size. Certain species do well, other's don't. You can't just paint a broad brush over so many species.

  • Rod and Reel, little or no bycatch, price of fish goes up, fishermen make a living, fish stocks rebound, everybody is happy.

Unfortunately, greenpeace wants to stop rod and reel fishing also.

No one would bottom trawl on a coral reef, this video is BS.

  • I like to use a fishing pole!

  • There must be a more sustainable way, i know this is wrong but there is still a population to feed, however this is the lowest of the low. They should also have chance to at least reproduce to more sustainable numbers too.

  • You will never get people to agree on the best way to conserver the marine environment, I personally believe the way ahead is to setup marine reserves like Lundy Island with a NO TAKE policy but on a larger scale.

  • Anybody ever watched "Wag the Dog"? Well apply it to Greenpeace etc and seaFOOD. They want your "green" vote and your "green" dollar, they need it to stay in business. Prawn trawling is done like farming, certain areas at different times of the tide, moon, season, year etc. Not one place all the time. They never give you facts only words that play on your emotions. Ray Hilborn and Walter Stark have articles that are truthful. They are not affiliated with oil funded organizations.

  • Fishing is disgusting and we're destroying the oceans with our greed.

  • Wow! This video is extremely misinformed. I have been on many fishing excursions with NOAA and other government organizations. Less than 1% of the ocean floor is touched by bottom trawls. This video is all lies.

  • Save the ocean environment and wild fish. Eat farmed fish only. Alaska farms 1.5 billion salmon each year to sustain their "wild salmon" fishery.

  • Only an industry populated by lunatics would use a harvesting method which destroys the environment which supports the very thing they are tryin to catch! Only massive no-go commercial areas will enable stocks to recover sufficiently to be sustainable. This isn't Nuclear Physics. Stop the destruction NOW!

  • i think greenpeace should try fishing for a year and learn how it really works.

  • fishing vessels are having to throw fish back DEAD because of quotas and thats meant to be preserving the harvest and if the boats were allowed to land what they are catching and as for this destroying the coral load of bull and as others have said any skipper in his right mind would stay to the tows that have been used for years and are clean bottom instead of getting his net ripped into sheds and then either have to spend hours or even days mending it or spend 10 grand on a new one

  • @knoxyfish greenpeace is right knoxy- listen to the people that know-hahahahaha!

  • I used to work in the fishing industry and there's so much, so much waste. Even loads of the fish that are wanted get binned apart from everything else.

  • We are setting up a initiave to protect fish and oceans... People for CHANGE... join us...

  • @ChangeNavigators half the world starving-at least get your priorities right.

  • When it says it also pulls up marine animals.... duh were not dumb and its suppose to get marine animals. Green peace i admire your organization put your just dumb teenagers trying to save the ocean

  • Lol.. GP is so lame..

  • iiiii HATE BOTTOM TRAWLING ITS WRONG AND CRUEL!!!! DONT RUIN THE OCEAN!!!!!!!

  • This crap needs to stop.... period.

  • this fishing should have been stopped years ago

  • If we are going to continue to tolerate this we will face the same fate as the Rapa Nuis did a long time ago!

  • These guys need to be banned. Draggers are the rapists of the sea.

  • im a avid fisherman i fish 4 to 5 days a week hust for fun not to make a liveing or anything but i do agree with you that the commercial guys are the ones doing the most damage

  • MILLIONS MORE TIMES DAMAGE IS DONE BY THE CHEMICALS FLUSHED DOWN TOILETS every MINUTE OF EVERY DAY.Trawling is far less damaging than scallop dredging and no fisherman towing any sort of gear will want to go any where near a reef because of the damage to his gear-which can cost £10000`s

  • Meh....Makes me hungry though

  • trawling is the least effective method in commercial fishing from what i have seen on SOME trawl boats, not all, but many have much bycatch. Forget the damn bottom, this will grow back eventually and fish will seek refuge elsewhere. Why are trawling vessels on the east coast of NC. not facing laws that the circlenet fisherman are facing. I have practically no bycatch but im receiving the brunt of the punishment on laws and regs. If trawling is so terrible , then why am i being put out of busines

  • 1. A fisherman in his right mind would NEVER fish on a coral reef like Greenpeace would have you believe. It's simple. The coral and rocks are muck stronger that the chain on of the net and it would be a bar, not a chain, in seconds. As for the net it would be destroyed and at a cost of $1000's , not skipper would do it.

    2. The mud and stuff you see in the vid doesn't happen often. It does happen I have seen in only twice in 25 years of fishing.

  • Bottom trawlers do enormous damage to the sea-bed, and their numbers have grown hugely in recent years as yields from pelagic (mid-water) trawls have decreased through overfishing. In the beam-trawling varient, it's a massive metal girder that is dragged across the sea-bed - easily powerful enough to rip up coral - as we have documented on many occasions.

  • @GreenpeaceUK So trawling is your enemy, Fish farming is your enemy, wind farms are your enemy, nuclear power is your enemy, Coal & diesel power stations are your enemy. Can you tell me what you dirty hippys intend to feed and power the world with?? or will you not rest untill humanity is wiped off the face of the earth??

  • @alistairarthur and UK trawlers dont trawl over tropical coral reefs!

  • @alistairarthur When we remove all biota from an environment, what do you expect to eat in the future? Fish farming is not sustainable for long term, nuclear power is not sustainable for long term, coal and diesel power is not sustainable for long term. What do you intend to feed and power your world with when biodiversity ceases? Alternatives that help meet long term sustainability are necessary, such as some wind farms and restrained fishing. Help find solutions that benefit both sides.

  • @distraughtelf in someways i agree. But it would be better if everyone worked together for a solution instead of the authorities lying to destroy the fishing industry. you will not believe me but Cod in the north sea is more now than in the last 80 years. My friend spent thousands of pounds steaming around trying to get away from cod. They cant get there quota of other fish for filling the net with Cod. I heard from a Norwegian last week, the biggest recorded year for cod was 1946 until 2010

  • @paekenglish what are you saying.......not to be rude or anything but the video made by greenpeace are they making it seem worse than it is or are you lying??????

  • @paekenglish Well said. These greenpeace hippies are always talking bollocks!!!!

  • I thought the same thing, no trawler skipper would risk his nets in such an area, this encourages me to believe this film is little more than propaganda. Peta are fond of putting out the same kind of message, unfortunately words that have little bearing on the happenings of real life.

  • im still catching the same poundage of fish yearly and have done so for 15 years and i have not been forced to use any diff. technology to obtain my fish than i started using 15 years ago. I use no electronic equipment , which in a lot of cases does not help the least bit. What proof do you have of fish declines in my region ?

  • The only reason people are still catching a lot of fish is because the techniques and technology we fish with is a lot more sucessfull than older techniques.

There is definately less fish in the water, there is no doubt. WTF do you want another collapse of a species? like on the grand banks!

  • if the fishing is getting so terrible because of overfishing , then how come fishing still exists, if we are overcatching then we will put ourselves out of business !!!! funny how my landings have not decreased in 15 years !!!!

  • With current global fishing capacity exceeding the total global catch by a factor of 4, and destructive methods like bottom trawling creating huge levels of waste, fishing in its current form won't survive. Unless fishermen learn to fish sustainably, it's hard to see many of you being in the same business in another 15 years time. If you value your livelihood you should pay attention to the science.

  • @motherlodeuk scientists told us we would drive fish to extinction twelve years ago whereas for the last twelve we are seeing more fish and larger schools. scientists have also told us that less than 1% of the ocean floor has been touched by bottom trawlers and since we fish in the same areas and are seeing a steady increase in numbers of fish and losing trawlers left right and center (due to the recession) i cant see the industry falling through

  • its not the over fishing its the way you're doing it!

    fuckin net dragers

  • you gotta get ur fish from somwhere dont bitch about how much the earth is damaged if youve never worked a day on a fishing boat its the hardest work out there try owning a boat and not knowing if ull make enough to go out again greenpece sux

    ps. screw the whales

  • there uh oldskoolchopperboy, guess since u saw the attitude of one fisherman, were all like that !! guess you did profit from helping to do all these things you speak of huh ?

  • I have been fishing for over 50 years, mostly in Africa. When one fished only rod and reel fisheries there were sustainable, supporting many coastal communities . Once the high tech trawling, longlining fleets (mostly from China, Korea, Japan) managed to bribe, corruptible officials for fishing rights many of these local African fisheries have collapsed. The only solution I see is a drastic global moratorium, that insists on all fishing to revert back to rod and reel, to allow stocks to recover.

  • interesting law of debate - people who dismiss logical, reasoned arguments as 'bullshit', rather than making a genuine case for the opposing point of view, are generally talking BS themselves. Here's yet another case that proves the rule...

  • If their were airplanes flying about with giant nets behind them, taking all the birds out of the sky, and the incects starting overpopulating and devouring vegetation at an unatural rate, and swarms of mosquitoes started spreading blood borne diseases to humans, and we all started dying from starving and disease, Do you think people would do something before it got that far?

  • I worked on a Twin Beamer Scallop boat for two years when I was 20yrs old, I have seen all the destruction, and the Skipper's attitude convinced me that he really hated the sea and all things in it, I was shocked at what he would dispose of into the sea, waste oil, hydraulic fluid, rubbish from the galley, he really didn't give a shit, I have worked at sea since that time as a diver, and still often witness the same callous disregard for marine life. I think they develop a strange contempt.

  • fiching like thet is illigal now

  • If only that were true. Sadly, the amount bottom trawling is actually growing as standard pelagic (mid-water) trawls return less and less fish.

  • I never even see anyone buy fish in SoCal. Are they tossing it out? I will ask them, my girl works with the meat dept.. Maybe they sell it for something else? I hate to see what these big companies do to this world and animals it is not defendable. (Is that a word? Is now)

  • The best human example I think were the inhabitants of "Easter Island". They were Polinesians who found their "Paradise" Island and used-up all existing (Palm) Trees to haul giant stone heads accross their coasline. Once these trees were gone, they found they had nothing left to eat. When the first sailing ship "discovered" them they had reverted to cannibalism out of sheer hunger... The inhabitants are mostly gone, but their "Stone Heads" stare out to sea and to the horizon to this day... Runi

  • Trawle fishing is as bad but on that scale it is.

  • We should ban factory fishing.. just like we should ban factory farming. However these answers require land reform & sea protection legislation.

Land reform to introduce non fossil fuel dependant organic farming practices & permaculture solutions to feeding our populations & sea protection in the form of global legislation to protect the seas from this sort of destruction. Seafood is sustainable food if farmed organically/sustainably &/or fished responsibly.

Right now all the seas need our HELP!

  • im sick to fucking death of ominvorese and their pallette obssessed/dictated lifestyles..."hey i LIKE MEAT AND FISH SO IM GONNA HAVE IT" "DONT TELL ME THE COST OR THE ENVIRONMENATL IMPACT,JUST GET IT ON MY PLATE" "MMM,I'D EAT DOGSHIT IF EVERYONE ELSE DID" pah so fucking sick of nobody giving a fuck about anthing but their stomachs...

  • why some people have to eat so much meat and fish - cant u it - it maybe once a moth or something like that like it was before 100 years ? and why u have to buy so cheap food.... help the nature and buy only food from your region (so u know what u eat and u dont ruin the world) u dont need seafood in the middle of nowhere go on holiday and eat it at the beach.....

  • Please tell me the best way the common man can enjoy seafood. Granted I catch everything I eat except crabs and lobster. So what am I supposed to do. I have friends that make a living from being honest fisherman and following rules. Jesus even fed fish to the 5,000. What would Jesus Say?

  • apparently "fish" was mistranslated, originally it said "fish weed". its not a reliable book, especially cause it was heavily edited in byzantine empire. and half of it could be myths. do we have any evidence? no. people even believe jesus had long hair, while it says long hair are forbidden. jesus was only a rival that wanted to become a son of god like john the baptist, apollonius of tyana or simon magus. and romans already had their own son of god when jesus lived. they were all rivals.

  • the problem with the human specie is that it will eat the oceans and lands out of food....and consume all other resources possible......what greedy little things they are................

  • the problem with the human species is that we keeo breeding, so much so that the oceans of the world no longer can sustain us.

  • Moron? no, I'm informed. However I do agree with you on bottom trawling. Fishing gear that distroys habitat is not good.

  • Get your facts right bud. Less than 0.1% of the ocean floor has never been touched by any type of trawl. Let alone the restrictions and IFQ's (Individual Fishing Quotas) rears fishermen from catching less than 5% of the oceans biomass, such as pollock, cod, whitening....Not to mention, there are only select spots that draggers continue to trawl. And destroying coral....come on! Any idiot knows that if you tow through coral, your either shredding your net or losing $100,000+ of fishing gear.

  • Sure vast areas of the ocean floor are relatively lifeless, so are ignored by bottom trawlers. They concentrate on the seamounts and continental shelves where they know most sea life will be found, and it's these places that are being trashed by mindless industrial fishing. And for the record, if you're dragging a tonne or tow of metal girder across a flat seabed you don't need to give a fuck about losing your gear towing through coral - you just steamroller right through it...

  • Do u think that GreenPeace would lie? Guess wut, u are just 1 of those ppl who just duznt no how to admit that our earth is under siege by the idiotic human species. Mor than 90% of the human activities done cause environmental damage. By far, bottom trauling has got to be the worst. And trust me, the Japanese know how to keep their nets strong enough to tear 1000s of yrs of ocean coral and life off the ocean floor in seconds. Instead of using denial, use your time to help our planet.

  • Greenpeece lie? all the time, why do you think patrick Moore left?

  • Um, would that be the same Patrick Moore who lost any reputation he might have had as an environmentalist through years working as a paid consultant to the timber industry defending the clearcutting of old-growth forests. Er, yes it would. Check out the 'Patrick Moore is a Big Fat Lier' website for more details (do a Google search). Of course, he knows bugger all about the oceans so his opinion on this subject is irrelevant anyway...

  • Greepeece is the fat lier. They purposly killed dolphins and filmed it to get people to donate money to them. Becouse of that film, thousends of Dolphins we're killed. greenpeece kills dolphins for money. It activities like this is why Patrick Moore quit.

  • "purposly killed dolphins and filmed it to get people to donate money to them."

Er, you are out of your tiny, fucking mind...

  • Not at all, I'm talking about dolphin safe tuna. Right after Greenpiece distroyed the American tuna seiner fleet out of San Diago, Dalphin mortility went up many fold in the ETP. Greenpiece hired a peruvian tuna seiner to set on dalphins and filmed it, told the Americain public that this is what the Americain tuna fleet was doing. So People donated money to greenpiece.

  • er no - moron

  • and we are suppose to believe you while you cant spell properly?

  • yes i think GP would lie , most of what they use is for their benefit, they're not gonna give you the full truth as it doesn't help their cause. propaganda at its best

  • so who tells the truth?

    the media?

    the goverment?

    please....

  • how much of the ocean floor is used to fish stupid?

  • What's that all aboot Terrance?

  • I pity these fools dont even realise the damage, all they see the almighty dollar its not almighty its weak it diseases people with weakness towards who they really are EARTH GUARDIANS nature before humans

  • once again man has fucked up..

  • :*( How could they just toss that huge coral aside as if it were nothing.. its so sad.

  • Yeah, I Agree with bibbaby212. You also must take into account where they live and what they are accustomed to eating. Just like I live in the US, and lookie here, there is meat here that we eat like Cows, Chickens, or Pigs that I'm pretty sure other countries would testify against. And most of ours is factory farmed!..Point being, there are lots of animals dying because of humans. I don't know, such a huge problem.

  • I loooovvvveeee the ocean. I recomend The End of the Line by Charles Clover for anyone who wants to go into further details about over fishing.

  • Couldn't agree more - it's an excellent account of the results of decades of overfishing, shocking but highly recommended. Apparently he's working on a documentary film version for release later this year...

  • I agree with you, hunting of whales should be banned. But it's not the Chinese. It's Japan, Norway, and Iceland that are the main culprits.

  • i hate the chines killing whales just to eat shame on them not all but most chines should not hold the games it should go back to greece .

  • whats bottom trawling got to do with killing whales.

  • in the north sea the majority of trawling is done in mud and sand areas and when the weather gets bad and a storm hits then the turbulent water blasts all the mud around to fill in the tracks made by the gear. remember that trawlers follow select tracks in order to avoid obsticalls, if the tracks wern't filled in again then after all these centeries of fishing then they would by big holes and trust me they arn't, we keep an eye on them on the plotter in the wheelhouse.

  • the funniest thing i found about that clip is that it tried to shock people by telling them that fishermen target fish!!!

  • You're effectively ploughing the same area upto 7 times every year. If you tried this on land nothing would grow in your fields, because it would have no time to recover. Effectively that's what you are doing to the seabed - you've fished out most of the pelagic species until only the bottom-dwellers are left. Great plan - I hope the profits you're making now will sustain you in the future when the fishery's gone for good in a few years time...
