  • I think if you compare Derek to Geoff Downes of Asia,Buggles, and Yes it would be a much better comparison. Jordan Rudess is in a leauge of his own.

  • Best member of Dream Theater other than Mike Portnoy.

  • Why does this sound like major wanking to me? But what do i know...

  • ммм... неплохо )

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEREK SHERENIAN

  • someone knows the model and brand of the keyboard?

  • @supersmashbrosevil Looks like a Korg Triton, don't know which one though.

  • @freetrader0000 Probably the triton exteme

  • @mykindom666 i search it is a pro 76

  • Which song was that in the end?

  • Eddie Van Halen Called he wants eruption back

  • i know that rudess is awesome but MEN! i never sawhi play iron man

  • i never EVER! SAW RUDESS PLAYING SUCH GUITAR SOLO WITH AN ORGAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @nomeolbidet Actually that's not an organ at all... its a Korg synth with distorted patch...

  • Well, at least he has the good taste to bring a Hammond organ on stage, unlike most keyboard wizards nowadays.

  • What a dreadful row! Whoever told this bloke he can play has got a lot of explaining to do!

  • And, 1:30 - Lines In The Sand FTW!

  • 0:40 Iron Man FTW!!!

  • I love synthesizers, but the sound of this workstation annoys me...

  • @DDDekost , @ OneHundredInNewYears , And etc.

The ONLY reason Rudess is not a keyboard player OR a robot is because God allowed the keyboard to play Rudess, DUH! *Brick'd*

  • I love Derek music, in fact I have all his solos cd's and the PlanetX's but Rudess is more technical, faster and the level of improvisation is ahead of Derek.

  • @ekalb2185 I totally agree...

  • I like Derek better than Rudess,Derek RULES!!!!

  • This performance annoys me.

He can only fake expression by having one hand on a plastic knob, his vibrato is always the same because he doesn't actually modulate the note.

Every note sounds like the same velocity. The way he plays the note has no affect on the tone.

Then there's the horribly mechanical desecration of that Black Sabbath riff. Guitar riffs never translate well to keys.

The whole playing position is irritatingly ostentatious as well. Neck ache at the expense of showing off?

  • i don't like that lead

  • The Ted Mosby in the world of Prog :D

  • i hate it when people say "yeah he is good but whatever" okay people he played for dream theater..... he is definatly one of the best keyboard players out there.

  • diggin the sopranos shirt

  • Sherinian is probably the more fun guy, but I feel like they'd all be cool to hang out with.

  • The keyboards should play like a keyboards....not like a guitar. -2

  • @DeceptionOfTheState appreciate it

  • Another tripped out keyboardist ...Man are you freaking high or what...You call that chit music ...you Seriously look confused and lost on a bad trip....love the smashing of the keys ...ummm my 2 year old does it just about the same ...Talented you are but lost man 4 sure

  • that didn't sound or look like dream theater, anybody mind telling me the band and song?

  • @MrKculnalyd I don't know the song but the band is Planet X.

  • I would rather have a clinic with Rudess. I would rather have a jam session with Sherinian. And I LOVE the straight-up trashy sound effects that Sherinian gets out of the keyboard in a lot of his music. Straight GRIMY!

  • he has just as much finger technique for the pitch bend as for the keyboard itself! i mean, look at 2:12!

  • Derek Sherinian is simply my greatest inspiration as keyboarder.

  • i dont think rudess is better than sherinian; i respect both of them, although i'm bigger fan of derek... :)

  • the riff at the end isn't sick... is PERVERT...fucking amazing

  • dam he really loves his pitch bend

  • sherinian had a better rock feel... ruddess is the best technically but with him DT is much more boring...moore is the best MUSICIAN of the theree (and by that i mean someone who writes good music).... all of the above is my opinion of course :)

  • I am a huge fan of Dream Theater. I love all of their keyboardists. But my favorite is Derek Sherinian. He has unique guitar-style playing. The only sad thing was he was in the wrong time (problems with label). But "A Change Of Seasons", Lines In The Sand & Trial Of Tears are truly classics!

  • what dream theater albums was this guy on?

  • @TheRealErob Falling into Infinity and scenes from a memory

  • @Rhamsody Scenes From A Memory was actually Jordan's first album with DT, Derek was gone by that point. A Change Of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, and Once In A Livetime were Derek's only recordings with Dream Theater.

  • @tommycheesus524

And it as Moore who composed the keyboard for COS.

I still liked Moore the best. Even though he is probably the least skilled of the three keyboardists.

Not to mention I love Derek's solos on Trial of Tears.

  • what's the song that comes on after his solo

  • I think that one major differences there's between Sherinian and Rudess is that the latter has several keyboards while the other has only one (and Continuum & steel guitar).

  • Dzięki Jacek Sz, świetnie wymiata.

  • yeah but he was really perfect for a change of season

  • Thats pretty badd ass :D

  • i love derek but i dont understand why he doesnt play guitar !!! i mean he clearly wants to lol

  • does anyone else hear a little bit of Dream Theater's (when he was in it)

"Line's in the Sand"? From about 1:35 to 2:25?

  • @garzac00l Yup. Good call.

  • @garzac00l thats the first thing i noticed

  • PLANET X!!!!!!!!!! 8D

  • what type of keyboard is this???

  • @DimeCrisBag looks like a korg triton studio? maybe the 1st gen

  • @zoomckng Thats right! Thanks man!

  • Um, out of sync much?

  • Rofl from 1:32 and onward it looks like he is having sex with the keyboard. But have to say dang awesome skills man.

  • It's not about who is better or who has more phenomenal technique but rather who's sonic output on the keys you enjoy most. Let your ears decide!

  • what's the whole point of pleying the keyboard like that?

  • @allmetaliswelcome The whole point is to show that you can do anything and everything on a keyboard if you have skill.

  • @allmetaliswelcome

    he likes it

  • He use only the monster lead...wtf??

  • funny that everyone is just talking about rudess and derek like they are the only ones who play keyboard in the world :P for anyone who likes this I can recommend dereks album molecular heinosity, it kicks ass!

funny how he does the little yngwie-lick in the end :)

  • @Muteminusfive it's because they're both ridiculously talented and they're probably only fans of them because of Dream Theater haha I also really like Michael Pinella. I'm not too much into keyboardists but these three are really good in my oppinion. Kevin Moore is ok, but i think that both Jordan and Derek surpass him

  • I think that the best is Rick Wakeman

  • DEREK SLAYS ASSES WITH HIS TRITON

  • Derek is a genious, and have a special tone.... singular melody.... I like.

  • What else do we really expect form a keyboard player, they are both good, other wise he could never in a million years enter Dream Theater, if he was sacked I'm sure it wasn't because of his skills, His Armenian/ Iranian background might have been the reason, people of our region are not good at teamwork. even in our (soccer) football you can see that, everyone wants to be a star and thats not possible.

  • @persopower You're right, he certainly wasn't sacked because of his skills. I think the main problem was his flamboyance on stage, and his personality didn't quite mesh as DT had hoped.

  • @persopower he got sacked because jordan rudess' chemistry with dream theater flowed much easier. it had nothing to do with his religious views. he is great, but dream theater found that composing music with rudess was easier and more unique

  • @alexislago Iranian and Armenian are not "Religions" my friend, Iran and Armenia are both countries. I never said anything about his religous background, anyhow Armenians are Christians and Armenia was the first country in the world that offically became a christian state, so even religously he would have problems with those guys, I worte about his cultual background.

  • @persopower yeah but that is not the case. he was let go because jordan rudess has a better chemistry with the band

  • @alexislago Ok Alex, thanks

  • Wanker

  • Rick Wakeman is laughing of this video

  • it's dumb to compare this guy to rudess or any other key player. It's unfair and it's not the point. This guys is a virtuoso when it comes to sound, technique and talent.

I wish Dream Theater had never fired this guy... it wouldn't be the crap that it is now

  • Hahaha... I saw the Lines in the Sand thing coming at about... 1:21 . He must not have been able to help himself ;P

  • sherinian is more rock than rudess

  • he´s one of the greatest, even more than rudess

  • It's pure shred and also without that technical skill of other keyboardists (Rudess, Wehrkamp, Pinnella, Emerson, etc...)

  • Haha Iron Man...

  • nice sound, very good!!

  • He is good but in youtube i've seen unknown people playing much better solos. But he is good.

  • Do I spy a Carvin DC747?

  • @rodrigomacias yea this doesnt appeal to me much at all, its like zakk wylde of keyboard just messin around for shits

  • He's not good like Rudess or other keyboard players but he still has a respectable technique.

  • He's got more power than Rudess, but Jordan has more technical talent. But Rudess gets kinda boring sometimes after a 4 minute solo, whereas Derek's stuff is always sounding fresh.

  • @DDDekost

    Respectable technique. = Yes.

He's not as good as Rudess = Yes

    JR= Yes.

  • @larrball He composed the every best intro for a DT song= Yes.

  • @larrball et all

Derek's better at soloing, i mean by himself - not playing a solo with a band but entertaining a crowd alone. I think he reaches out to his audience in a way that i can follow better than the other guy. I cant tell wtf rudess is doing - but it's very fast. Rudess is a fantastic piano player though, i give him that. Him a piano and a room full of people - no contest. Derek...wouldn't you want him in your band? There's some raw, honest expression you cant get at Juilliard-I guess

  • @DDDekost Rudess is a living legend.

  • @cvl85 Did I say he's not?

  • @DDDekost Stop talking about Rudess!!!!

  • @gorto27 Rudess is a PIANO player ! Derek is a Keyboardist !

  • @vetlerradio ...and Darth Vader is Luke's father!

...and Justin Bieber is a girl!

    ...and Obama is black

    ...and Jon Stewart is funny!

  • @gorto27 so funny... I mean, Jordan Rudess is better at the piano than Derek... and a Keyboard is not a piano.

  • @vetlerradio Hehe, sorry, I know what you meant. I agree with you, Jordan has classical/jazz influences; in the opposite side, Sherinian is a hard rock guy. They problem is that they played in the same band, which leads to a lot of comparisons

  • @gorto27 haha ! That's ok... But I must say that both of them are incredible and creative musicians !

  • @gorto27 hell yeah I dont like Jordan Rudess at all,Im a straight up Sherinian fan all the way

  • @DDDekost Sometimes man its not all about technique. If that's all it was, everyone would sound exactly the same. Rudess is more technical obviously. Sherinian plays with alot more feeling. So does Kevin Moore. Frankly I miss the mood both Moore and Sherinian set on the stuff they played on for DT. Gave more heart to the songs.

  • @danimal975 I didn't say it's all about technique.

  • @danimal97520 Rudess plays with a lot of feeling, not just the technique, one of the main problems is that I haven't seen much contribution from Jordan in the songwriting part, he wrote Overture from SDOIT, and it's a masterpiece. I've seen lots of things that Rudess made outside of DT, and they're amazing, not just technically, I'd like to see that more in DT. But I understand what your saying, thats why I like songs like Stream of Conciousness and Space Dye Vest more than Dance of Eternity.

  • @DDDekost Well...Techniquie is the last thing he's lacking of...man...he's the Caligula of the keyboards...and he's up there in the top with Rudess and Kuprij...undoubtedly one of the greatest KB players ever...

  • @DDDekost

Rudess is a robot not a keyboard player

  • @DDDekost Maybe not as technically competent, but he wanks like a little girl a bit less

  • this is bullshit...how can you say that he doesnt have technique......while it obvious that he has..and why do you even listen him if you dont like his playing...i listened a lot of his solo stuff and i can say that hes really good keyboard player..really progressive..and his solos r quite unique..not like other keyboard players cause he does this crazy bends and modulations with his lead sound...

  • Well, he is great - but in DT I like Kevin Moore and Rudess better. They just swing along with the rest of the band in a better way. But great sound, great keyboard player.

  • It basically sounds like a guitar solo, especially when you add the bends....therefore, whats the point?, I would have liked it better if it sounded like a piano or something personally

  • @Scarjes He wanted to show how well it sounds like a guitar that's just it, if it was tony playing guitar you wouldn't have say that

he's just playing guitar with his keyboard get over it, he's having fun, he even played Iron Man just for the sake of it

  • He has the best lead sound ever.

  • Supa

  • i love how he plays the keyboard like a guitar player lol

and i also love his lead sound, derek seems like he'd be fun to hang out with and jam along with

  • I didnd't like it :S

  • What stand can you use to invert a keyboard like that? And he is such a beast.

  • basicly...its the best to buy only handles that you stick on your original normal stand...and just invert it hehe..

  • Tony Mcalpine lol great guitar and piano player!

  • really dug the King Crimson would have loved to hear further interpretation of 21st Century Schizoid Man --excellent shit at the end also

  • Uh, you mean where he played Black Sabbath's "Iron Man"? There was no KC in here anywhere...

  • i still Jens johanson better but this gut is still pretty good.

  • of course jens is better, jens is god of keyboard solos, and his lead is the coolest lead ever, but dereks lead sound cool too, especially with this wah wah effect,

  • guitar sound que uses sucks

  • not really..i think you suck...because of that blind statement....do you know how hard is to create guitar like lead on keyboard...and his intention wasnt to create identical copy of guitar sound....but his own unique lead sound...and thats what this lead is....

  • he kind of looks like a young elvis... but an ON TOPIC comment would be: I really like his style, but Moore and Rudess own him.

  • yeah, he really has style, and his lead is wicked, so hes good on his own way...im glad that we have so many good keyboardists today...but still jens johansson is my favourite...as derek stated that jens is the coolest guy on keyboards today..so i agree with his opinion...

  • and he owns you

  • No shit shurlock.

  • ...another thing, if he should spill a Coke (c) on his keyboard it would just run off since he has it tilted!

  • Sound quality is poor but what a musician! I've tried to play these things! He is very talented also love Rudess and Jenkees!

  • Rudess and Jenkees are def the best!

  • Rudess is technically untouchable, I think, but I like Derek better. He is not afraid to attack the keyboard in unconventional way and the way he plays the stick with his left hand is second to none. He sure has the feel for it, hands down. Planet X is a superband, no one, I say, NO ONE can touch them!

  • No one? I guess you haven't heard On the Virg.

  • No, I didn't. I will check 'em out and will get back to you. But as of now - and I heard ton's of good stuff - I am still pretty secured in saying that they are THE band. It's just not Derek, it's everybody, be it Tony or Virgil. They have the chemistry that DT can only really DREAM of...

  • RUDESS > SHERINIAN

  • doesn't matter, music is NOT a competition

  • you sir are a troll

    they're all great. But actually

    Moore>Rudess>Sherinian

  • True, they're all great, BUT...I've never seen any performance by Kevin Moore that comes even close to Jordan Rudess.

  • that is quite debatable, you know that?

  • DEREK RULES!

  • What's the name of the song from 0:40 to 1:08?

  • It´s Black Sabbath´s "Iron Man"

  • iron man by black sabbath

  • iron man by black sabbath

  • Yesss!!! Djordan Rudess for ever!

  • rudess for ever

  • I agree with you if you say jordan rudess is better than sherinian and he's one of the best keyboardist in the world, but you shouldn't say "Fuck Sherinian", cause he's also a very good keyboard player too...

  • i Agree, Derek is also good, and rudess too, they just have a lot of different styles, Derek can probably do some stuff that Jordan couldn't and Jordan some things that Derek can't do.

  • considering when he joined, they did change of seasons as munch, they changed and had a decent album because of the label u dumb shit! but you wouldnt fucking know that cuz you didnt read the rfucking biography.

  • don't assume shit about me you prick. i have read the biography. for your information, change of seasons is my least favourite album mostly because of sherinian. not a big falling into infinity fan either.

  • Hey man... rudess is my favourite keyboardist but u can't say sherinian fuck!!

    is a awesome keyboardist

  • sure i can. i just did. and i don't take it back for a single second

  • so man u understand nothing about musik...

u just listen to musik... u don't understand it...

    but of course Jordan RULES

  • fuck you. i do understand music. i happen to be going to university for music. i just have a different opinion than you and i'm firm in my beliefs and its pissing you off.

  • so why don't u say just that u don't like sherinan??? he's a awesome keyboardist. SHIT

  • i did. i just said it in stronger words than you may have liked. and again, i'm not taking back what i said. now if you'll excuse me, i have other things to do with my time.

  • byebye le muort de kitt'èmmuort

  • can any one dispute that lines in the sands intro is prob one of the most recognizable , memorable, definately not the best, and YET prob easiest, key solo in the entire DT reportoire of key solos....thats where the soul at...not the no of notes and turns the hands make........wanna flame me....tryin humming out J.d's shred solo by memory..NOW......okie...times up...now try huming lines in the sand. . ...nuff said.

  • I wouldn't call that a solo, more of just a melody.

  • muito bom... só que para solar com um timbre de guitarra era melhor ter utulizado outro modelo de teclado..ok

  • IRON MAN!

    love it^^

  • ULTIMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... rudness and moore are better

  • you said it all

  • i agree with u on rudess's shredding totally. the amazing technical brain kills the soul.

  • its because they love their music

  • Comment removed

  • funny thing is that he prolly:

    1) gets laid more than u

    2)doesnt kno you exist

    3)doesnt care if you exist

this guy is more talented than most will ever be and he can make all the faces and gestures he wants as long as his quality of music continues to be above and beyond that of the average keyboard soloist :)
