I'm Canadian myself. But I agree that Ohno shouldn't have been disqualified, and I think that Hamelin should have been disqualified! Why? Because Hamelin pushed the Korean skater. I've reviewed the video many times. The judge made a flawed decision; he was probably favouring Hamelin, a fellow Canadian. Tsk tsk! So it should have resulted in Ohno getting the gold medal!
Not sure if you are a short track speed skater yourself... but if you are, you would know that when speeding around a corner doing a "pivot" maneuver at sub 9 seconds per lap, leaning at a banked angle of less than 45 to 30 degrees relative to the surface of the ice, even a feather touch in a particular direction on the skater could cause the skater to cave in downward towards the ice (in this case), or in a different way, cause the skater to bounce upward and get thrown out of the corner...
1) The rule isn't "touching", it's "impeding". A Touch does not disqualify unless it's impeded's another skater. And not only did Apolo touch the Korean with his hand, his skate got under the Korean's, causng him to wipe out - something American television doesn't really show.
2) The nationality of the judge doesn't matter. That's a pretty weak argument. If anything, especially given the controversies over biased judging in the past decade, the eye of scrutiny would lie more heavily on him.
lol these people are skating 45km/h...a touch can make a skater fall..so if u see that he layed his hands on the canadian when ohno had no chance of crossing it shows it was on purpose.
not only did it cause a canadian to fall, but another canadian to mess up, and cost korea a gold
i agree with u 100%..i am like the biggest Apolo Ohno fan!!!! and i cried wen i watched the video and wen he got discualified...and if u watch the whole video he actually shook hands with the canadian dude he "made" fall -_-
yeah no offense.... your arguement is very invalid. Speed track skating isn't like regular skating, the blades are much thinner than regular skates so it's much harder to control. If you move just a little bit, that movement is very large. That's why the rules say you are NOT allow to have ANY physical contact with other competitors during the competition. Even if it's a little, you'd be disqualified. So your claim of just "slightly touching" does not help with the your argument at all.
@kikyousan Ok, so if the rule says no physical contact is allowed whatsoever, then I think that every skater that touches another should be immediately DQ'ed but thats just not the case. its inconsistent.. which is why i have a problem with it.
@ThirtySecondsToLive Not just any physical contacts that are inconsequential to the outcome... it is any physical contact that impede either the path of the skater such as cross tracking, blocking with hands, push, very lightly touching someone eyes with your hands flapping, that results in another skater either losing his / her track, crashes, get off balance, etc, which ultimately materially affecting final results...
@kikyousan the blades are mearly just a tad bit thinner than hockey skates and just have no hollow thats about it. its not THAT hard to control. its prettymuch the same as inline speed skating.
It amazes me how someone can make two comments on this video only to say how pointless it is- well you felt the need to comment on it twice because you disagreed with my POV. Like you said, enough people have my POV to keep it from being completely invalid. I'll watch whatever opinions you send me- I don't care. I actually have an open mind and in fact asked to hear other people's opinions. I would have appreciated yours more without the insults, but that's your prerogative.
except a gold medal off a false start and pretending to be interfered with are not considered "fair"
dont blame the canadian judge either, unless you have ever done short track speed skating, and have ever been pushed, even if it was only lightly, you will see that it can knock you way off balance
I dont really know what the rules are but I think this is a stupid race to begin with. Having 4 guys skating like this its pretty hard not to contact anybody. Not sure why the need all these different types of speedskating races for the same disttance
The judge was supposed to be Australian but it had to be changed last minute because he was getting death threats from a decision he made the day earlier dqing the Korean skater
When you're going that fast and banked that hard, that push is going to make a difference. If Apolo had kept his hands to himself, he would have come in last anyways, so it was a fair race.
Who gives a shit who she supports. She said she was american, she has a right to chear for whoever she wants. Your implying that if your not for one country, then your against it. Realise what the olympics are all about, and stop being indictative of others
They shouldn't have had a Korean ref either. Basically anyone who was competing, or anyone who's country has strong beef/ties with the people competing shouldn't have a ref from their country be the final word.
I thought Apolo was awesome before he acted so immaturely after his defeat. And there are very specific rules for short track. The excuse, "There was no place to pass", doesn't fly. And he can take his conspiracy theory and shove it. Grow a pair and grow up.
That being said, I appreciate you saying that Charles Hamlin deserved the gold, because a number of Americans are claiming he doesn't, which is stupid.
WOw. Whine. Whine. Whine. Whine. That's all you people do. I hope you become Apolo's wifey. Then you'll have to deal with your kids. Provided your womb is not as barren as your brain.
