They used a spoon to pick up the baby becuase if she touches it with her flesh, thier scent will get on the baby and the mother will be confused and eat or abandon the baby.

It's no big Deal and the baby will not be harmed like that

I bought a Russian dwarf hammy from petco 3 years ago I pick out a boy well I thought i had then 5 days later I heard squeaks alot of them I was curios I tought my hamster was choking or something so I found my hammy burrowed under the bedding of the cage and there were 6 babys I was in shock lol it was cute I thought my hamster was just fat and not prego lol my baby hammys lived I gave them to my friends and kept a a baby and the mom.

the mom hamster eats her baby when she gets hungry very very hungry and when she feels that her babies threatened . removing the baby after birth is bad way bad and dont ever remove and play with young hamsters I mean the babies when they get a little bit grown up and they still need mom`s milk you can touch and play with the babies in front of the mom for like 1 minute max cause if that took longer it thinks that baby is not hers and the odor of the baby will change . feed the mom more food

@LaurenNP36 I think that's only the case with Syrian hamsters. This is a dwarf hamster and I believe the male is alright to stay in with the mother and babies. I'd make double sure before doing it, though, I might be remembering wrong.

Hello,im 10 and my hamster had babies 3 weeks ago i think and the the mom was living with them for 2 weeks and the Dad which was suprising the dad is pure white and the mom is gray on top with black strip and white on the bottom the dad is really nice and he was my favorite Not every hamster dad will eat the babies,and really suprising the dad cleaned the babies 2 and there healthy and my hamster just had 2 more babies and killed them cuz i think they had a disease Thank you by

Okay for all those saying the mom will eat the babies if you touch them, no she won't. Most rodents will do this, but hamsters will not. You can even leave the male in the cage and he will help raise them. Grant the mom might attack him, but he won't hurt the babies.

I used to breed hamsters. I wouldn't suggest messing with them right after birth, but you can handle them the next day, no problem. Also they used the spoon to roll the baby onto it's tummy. It was turtling.

My hamster has just give birth to 4 pups and 1 of them was dead on arrival so we lifted it out with a spoon to avoid leaving our scent near the live pups (human scent on pups can cause the mother to abandon or even kill the pups) but we would never think of taking a live pup from the nest even for a few seconds of video footage. You can clearly see the pups inside of the tank without removing them, maybe consider this next time she gives birth ?
