If you are not afraid of the truth, and are ready to read a little scripture then I can send you the references you need to understand the matter thoroughly.
Malachi was speaking to the Levites about their own tithing from the portion they got from the children of Israel, as they had no inheritance.
The Israelites ATE THEIR TITHE the first two years, and SHARED IT the third year with Levites, fatherless, widows, strangers, etc. So even if you wish to be legalistic, it is less than 3 percent.
1Kings 2:12 validates the daddy issue if u need more verses where Paul spoke and said honour ur parents in the lord,

I am sorry JJ, but I think they base this principle on the book of Malachi 3 : 6-13 therefore it is scriptural to tithe.
