To all lifelong, strong Jim and Maury fans & followers, please have a safe & HAPPY NEW YEAR! January is these never forgotten troubadours birthday month. Happy birthday guys we so wish you were here. An Upper Darby brother.
I got a name!
Redwanderer
I agree with the request for Time in a bottle. Croce wrote that one for his son. Muehleisen was also awesome on guitar. I play myself and hope to be half as good as they both were by the time I get to 80.
I've just seen a clip of Gordon Lightfoot with his old buddies... spectacular. Wish Croce could of been this old and still carry his songs.
Who is the guy that played guitar with Jim always? He is really good and the piano player has always been good. These three men, were really great. I miss Jim Voice on the radio
@atp1962 I love this music and miss both Jim and Maury Muehleisen, it is a sound you seldom hear anymore. No one to arry the torch forward after folks like Jim are gone. Love guitar and the picking. Thanks for posting
@atp1962 I imagine you've already found out his name. But if you haven't heard, Maury was a freakin' genius. I've never heard anyone play a six string like him. There was almost no overdubbing on any on their studio albums. If you can split your speakers, most of the time you'll only hear one of the guitars. There is an anniversary 2 disc set with 49 songs, and a short taped interview with Jim, that I absolutely recommend. His older solo stuff doesn't have anywhere near the dynamics that his
@atp1962 later stuff with Maury does, but that's because no one could manage Maury's dynamics except Maury. Each guitar part, Jim & Maury, is itself an entire song. Jim's rhythm playing is classic, but still has a distinctive touch. But speaking of Maury's leads, Roller Derby Queen, starting in the second verse, is.... well there are no words to describe that part. And I don't know if you're a Hendrix fan, but the lead on Speedball Tucker might as well be the acoustic equivalent to Voodoo Child.
I remember hearing these songs when I bought the "I Got A Name" album just after Croce's death in '73. I remember "Five Short Minutes" but did not understand what the song was about. It was 20 years later before I found out what the line "She casted me in plaster..." meant! I've missed Croce these past 35 years.
There was a group of rock groupies that used to cast the private parts of famous rockers in plaster. The book "Hammer of the Gods The Led Zeppelin Story" talks about this extensively. Somehow Croce doesn't fit that image but I'm pretty sure that's what he's refering to in the song.
"Casted me in plaster" is actually an old saying that just means someone is eyeing you, shall we say, provocatively. Kinda like the line "Who's that casting devious stares in my direction" from the song Sex and Candy from Marcy playground.
But of course I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure it's happened before, but certainly wouldn't be the first to attest to it.@mrsgstd
"Casted in Plaster" is actually an old rock and roll 'ritual' where the male, er..manhood is actually casted in plaster. Google the Plaster Casters. There were a couple of girls that went around doing this to famous musicians back in the day. Cynthia Albritton I believe was one of there names.
@MrHerbgreen Jim got the casted me in plaster reference from the fact that Cynthia Albritton tried to make plaster molds of rock star penises in the 60's and 70'. She made a replica of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, to name a few.
this is the wonderful music i remember hearing while growing up. keep it coming! and thanks again for sharing ... what great memories i have of this music.
