Vissi già mesto e dolente, or gioisco, e quegli affanni

  • best scene!!!

  • Really great!

  • this is sooo good!! I love montverdi

  • Muy bueno

  • Mrs Margaret Kennedy Dygus is the best music teacher ever!!!!!

  • Ok... wow! heh. This is incredible. Who's the singer? Is he famous?

  • It is really refreshing to see the opera staged according to its theme, and not the current fashion. Making opera (or any kind of theatre) "more relevant" by making the singers/actors wear clothes unrelated to the context of the play , reveals a really childish understanding of what "relevant" means...

  • @majortom51970 I couldn't agree more. I wish, for once, I could go to a "real" opera.

  • Could you begin your playlis with a more poignient song

  • DMatiz30...it's from a DVD of the opera, recorded in Barcelona. I got mine from Amazon. It's wonderful, although this clip is the liveliest part of it...

  • How can i find this whole version? Who produced it?

  • @DMatiz30 It's from the DVD, recorded in Barcelona...I got my copy from Amazon. It's wonderful, though this is the liveliest part of it...

  • Please hate me: music's great, but this is one of the most embarassing productions I've ever seen.

Oh yeah: I love his golden harp :) - i'm sooo inspired by this great art.

All of you who are figthing for this epigonally stuff, please imagine that until the 19th century singers mostly wore contemporary costumes - and when they wore historical costumes as an exception this was sth. extraordinary...

monteverdi - who was very progressive! - would have laughed (or cryed?) about this, believe me

  • @JetLiXXX boring comment

  • @JetLiXXX yes but isn't interpretation up to the director?

  • @JetLiXXX well no... baroque opera often harked back to ancient greece

  • @JetLiXXX ...and I supposed you and Monteverdi were really chummy, that's how you know what his emotional reaction to this production would have been right?

  • @JetLiXXX I hear what you are saying, I really do... But the thing about Opera is that it has to find a way to appeal to a contemporary audience. This means that its not always about what the original composer intended.

  • @Belgarion9989 no, JetLiXXX is wrong. They were often performing in this way with these kinds of costumes, harking back to ancient greece, which ALOT of opera of this time is based on

  • @Belgarion9989

Except I am in this younger generation of audience members - "contemporary" you could say. We are heavily insulted by directors who think we're too stupid to understand what Ancient Greece is. We went to middle school, thank you.

Want to know how to appeal to contemporary audiences? The directors need to get off their high horses and know some humbleness. Snootiness is what drives us away, not the stories/music/singing.

  • @Jaydoggy531 thank you for validating my point. I was saying that modern audiences appreciate historically accurate apparel and sets.

  • @Belgarion9989 So I'm guessing you'd have them prancing around in jeans and tank tops? This idea of making everything "contemporary" and "relevant", and the concurrent horror of anything archaic, is ironically a hallmark of the baby boomer generation. But of course you only really know what young people think/ want if you were young in the 60's and 70's.

  • @Cherubicon Uh, way to not make assumptions about my age. I am saying that modern audiences appreciate a more historically accurate performance.

  • I love it.

  • Gracis por poner esta video. La musica es buenisimo

  • Joedi Savall is simply the best

  • Grandioso!!!

  • We are indeed blessed to have Jordi Savalle in the world........The exquisite beauty of his Orfeo cannot be surpassed..............I am deeply moved by his absolute brilliance of production throughout.... words are not enough to express how monumental this work is, not to mention others..... the fruit of a lifetime dedicated to early music, by the foremost practitioner of this day!

  • love it!!!!

  • grazie

  • Magnífico! :)

  • Meh meh

  • Jordi Savall..............unico!

  • muy bueno

  • Magnifico! Mmuah!

  • Tuto arii mohu poslouchat donekonečna jako písně The Beatles.Prostě nádhera!

  • Lively! Methinks I'll do the gavotte.

  • Furio Zanasi (Orfeo) The BEST

  • Saint Jordi does it again:

    Simply Fabulous interpretation!

  • <3 <3

  • This is, by far, the musically best interpretation ever done!

  • Nádherná arie, která přenese člověka do jiné doby a odešlých lidských osudů.

  • The lighting is simply amazing. It could have been a movie.

  • Orpheo divine cantat divino simile!

  • Toll!

  • BRAVO

  • Monteverdi, genio absoluto.

  • Compare to the Simon Keenlyside version... love them both: this is so lyrical, legato - he stretches and luxuriates in the melody. Keenlyside is more muscular, energetic, angular, abstract.

  • easy singing.

  • mmm

  • Who's the tenor?

  • incredibilmente...delizioso

  • Aaah- brings back memories. The good ol' days (from about a year ago!)

  • I'm inspired

  • Hell yeah!!!! Savall rocks!!!!!!

  • I´m in love :P

  • BELLISSIMO GRAZIE !!! Fantastico

    fab

  • I wish i was there

  • Dude, I just can't enough of Orfeo and Monteverdi's music. This is a great performance. Anyone knows where can I buy it on DVD?

  • Yes, where??

  • I found it. Just look it up on Amazon or the like. It's a BBC production and is simply called "L'Orfeo".

  • he sounds pretty sweet, dude. hahaahah

  • it's true there are better recordings of Orfeo out there...it's still really tough to get top-tier performers to do early music--very little money in it, the ones who do, do it out of love and nothing else, i think.

  • a better recording than savall? :S This recording is amazing

  • Maybe the John Eliot Gardiner's one.

  • Eccezionale Zanasi per un'opera eccezionale

  • c',on us classical and baroque fans must show the world what a resource youtube is for this music - its great! im p*ssied btw half a bottle of rum so far and the night is young :D

  • vaya ***** de video!!!!

  • Grandisimo Monteverdi da brivido, bellissimo

  • I believe it is a Golden harp

  • Wait...don't answer that. It's his lyre isn't it?

  • this an awesome aria. but, tell me one thing, why is orfeo carrying a giant golden...thing?

  • Lyre, because this is based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. In it Orpheus plays the lyre, a Greek stringed instrument similar to what he is holding. He plays and sings so beautiful that he can sooth any man and beast.

  • Pure joy. Who is the wonderful, wonderful tenor?

  • Furio Zanasi

  • Thankyou .... good to know. Amazing performance. Wonderful video. Can't wait to hear more Zanasi.

  • From this video, this guy is pretty good as Orfeo. But if Orfeo is a unique character with a voice that no one can match (except Apollo), then this guy's voice isn't distinctive enough. I think Nigel Rogers would fit the bill.

  • Mi donus mil steloj, sed cxar YouTube limas nur kvin, mi donas kvin!

  • good version... but i prefer the Harnoncourt 1978 version

its surely a revolutionary way of cenic interpretation

the dvd is available by deutche grammophon ;)

    keep posting

  • What is the title of the DVD?

  • Monteverdi "L'Orfeo" by Harnoncourt / Jean Pierre Ponnelle

    Deutsche Grammophon

  • estupendo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have this DVD...it's wonderful music, especially Jordi Savall's ensemble. Who would have thought that the first surviving opera could be so enjoyable? It's not all this lively, though...

  • What sweet arcadian delights.

  • Marvelous production of MONTEVERDI's ORFEO. For me, it's the very best one. It's magic indeed. I quote jmdez: "So beautiful it makes every opera to follow seem degenerate". You got it!!!

  • Yes! Yes! YES! It is so wonderful to see some early music on here, and it actually getting attention! This makes me so happy. And Monteverdi no less! The king!

  • Indeed, Monteverdi, the King! This is a fantastic production. The best Orfeo ever.

  • Absolutely divine. Thank you for posting this.

  • Yes..beautiful!!! Monteverdi! Music between 1500-1600 wow.

  • So beautiful it makes every opera to follow seem degenerate. Like Mozart to come so effortlessly describes the emotions of the moment.

  • what's the name of this song? And does anyone by any chance have the librettotext from this? Thanks

  • No, non credo, Orfeo canta in modo molto naturale.

  • Hard to believe this opera was composed in 1605. It's actually even older than my hometown. That's the magic of ancient music.

  • i love it!

  • much better than the first part (for me)

  • *swoon* OMG! I love this tenor...I love Monteverdi...I LOVE BAROQUE!!!!!

  • Summit of the western art. Marvellous performance. Bravo!

  • A magnificent performance! Monteverdi himself would be proud! Great music and ballet! Bravo!

  • Great version!

  • GRAN OPERA BARROCA

  • Oh, is there something more adorable than these Greek Arcadian shepard scenes ...

I'm ENCHANTED by Orfeo/Zanasi and the genius of Monteverdi!

  • Vi ricorda ò boschi ombrosi,de' miei lunghi aspri tormenti, quando i sassi a' miei lamenti

  • Oh man!!! I've been looking for those lyrics for ages!!! Thanks a lot for posting them...

  • A small correction:

  • ¡Maravilloso!

  • sublime.

  • gloria patri et filio, et spiritui sancto...

    am i completely bullshitin?

  • Have a look at "The Full Monteverdi".

  • Truly amazing! This is enough to declare Monteverdi one of the best composer ever lived.

  • Início do Barroco.

    Este cantor interpreta Orfeu ?

  • Well, this opera is a mix between Renaissance and Baroque... just look at the instruments (cornetts, shawms, recorder, harpsichord, etc). Remember that Monteverdi marks the transition from Renaissance to Baroque time.

  • Amazing! I showed this to all my friends and they all loved it, even those that think baroque is a brand of cookies. Go Monteverdi!

  • wow! i defy anyone to say that baroque music is 'boring' after seeing this clip! It's practically a rock song. I love L'Orfeo definatly one of my favorite operas.

  • Is this Boroque or Renaissance? I saw at least one lute in the other clip.

  • Baroque

  • Very, very early Baroque though... Monteverdis first madrigals are really in a Renaissance style. Monteverdi was the most important bridge composer from Renaissance to Baroque. Also, the lute lived on for awhile, and the gigantic long necked lute you saw in the other video is actually a Baroque lute.

  • He was the person who coined the terms "prima practica" Renaissance style, and "seconda practica" Baroque style. This opera is a great example of him making use of both.

  • Yes, at times the choral parts sound like from Monteverdi's sacral music.

  • monteverid transitioned his musical style from renaissance to baroque.

  • WOw dey sho can lite a tune.Montepuccini .u go girl !

  • I agree with Carmello 35. this singer is really good!!!

  • No words... excellent!!

  • excelente

  • The joy of this beautifully staged aria masks the incredible sadness of the dénouement.

  • Hermoso.

  • Truly the food of love...

  • It is indeed one of the best operas in history!!

    ^-^

  • Hermoso registro. Gracias.

  • Thank you for uploading this. More video clips from the same opera would also be much appreciated.
