  • What are the dimensions of the started block? would I be able to do this with just a faceplate?

  • Also, if you search for "Gwinnett Woodworkers Association" on Youtube, and then look for Mike Peace's video on winged box's in their listings, you'll see what I mean. That is where I learned to cut them, though I have given a few my own distinct touches.

Again, nice work and nice videos. You do have some really neat ideas for sure!

  • Good job.

I personally like them with the sides of the wing a consistent thickness on the entire side, rather than getting so fat where the bowl portion is. Just a nicer, cleaner look in my opinion. Also gives the bowl a more defined line.

If you have an email I can send you some pics of mine, though the nicer pieces were given as X-Mas gifts, but I still have a couple kicking around waiting for lids and finish.

  • Might be a silly question but, what is the stuff your putting on the sandpaper?

  • It is a combination of mineral oil and paste wax. 10 parts paste wax and 1 part mineral oil.

You can find both of these on my website.

  • @haydenHD Oh wow, super quick reply hehe, thanks. What are the benefits of the wax oil mixture?

I am trying to purchase a lathe now but for metal work. Can you turn wood in a lathe made for metal working? Was thinking maybe I could just purchase a chuck head for wood working but I am not sure if the speeds will work. Thanks again and gorgeous work btw.

  • I use it to cut down on the dust and it give you a nice satin finish. You can use a metal lathe to turn wood but you will need to get a tool rest and wood chisels. make sure the RPMs are high enough.

  • I wanted to ask...how do you keep the wings from splintering? I tried something very similar using Tulip wood, but the wood splintered on the wings requiring me to sand them clean.

Love all the videos. Gives lots of inspiration.

  • By splintering you mean your not getting a clean cut?

  • @haydenHD exactly. I thought it was just that my tools were not sharp enough, but even after sharpening, still had large chips seeming to splinter off.

  • I would try a hard wood like maple you can get a nice clean cut.

  • @kniggette87 Spin it faster (2400-3000rpms) and take very light cuts with a VERY sharp tool. I use a fingernail grind spindle gouge (1/4" flute) and a 1/4" Ellsworth grind bowl gouge. I avoid scrapers, as I find they are more prone to chipping on these.

Remember, speed is your friend when dealing with interrupted cuts.

  • Quick question. I just started turning, I have a few that blow apart when almost finished, is this from trying to take too much off at a time? The walls of my bowl is about 3/8 or a little less. Was my second attempt but is frustrating!! thanks!

  • Can someone tell me what this wood is ventures?, Or some sort of paste wax?

  • Może ktoś powiedzieć, czym to drewno jest zapuszczane?, czy to jakaś pasta woskowa?

  • Thank you,

  • Carl when you make a tennon on the end of a project to hold in the jaws of your chuck...how long do you make that tennon...I have a nova chuck and can't seem to get it to hold tight enough...my chisels are razor sharp so I know it can't be that...but I always seem to have my projects jump out of the chuck

  • There 1 1/2" I have them jump out some times to.

  • What model Delta is that you're using? I have a 46 701 but your seems to be a different model.

  • I'll have to find the manual I can't remember.

  • Hi Carl. Great videos by the way. I'm really getting excited about wood turning and I have a project I would love to see demonstrated before I attempt it. I love to cook as do a lot more people nowadays and I was wondering if you could show me how to make some boxes for flour, sugar, coffee, tea and other things in a decreasing size. I used to love the traditional style but I'm curious to see your take on this and how to get that tight fit plus make it fit for holding food products.

  • Hi,

I'll work on it for next month I have a few more projects to do this month. I was thinking a glue up might work.

    Thank you,

    Carl

  • @haydenHD Thank you Carl. I am fast becoming one of your biggest fans. I just started watching a few weeks ago and am wanting to integrate a lot of natural materials in the plans for a new home. I have a lot of ideas, thanks to you and a few other furniture builders, that can integrate turning and building furniture. Thanks again and I can't wait to see your future projects.

  • WOW, if I had it all to do over again I would have made wood working a career! What is the price range for a good new and used Lathe?

  • heel mooi gemaakt top

  • what kind of video games did you use to make this?

  • Video games?

  • @haydenHD yeah like in the first part, wasnt that the new x men game?

  • you, sir, are a mad genius!

  • Thanks I think!

  • So what speed are you running when you start this.

  • I think about 1600 rpm

  • so the trick is DO NOT CUT the outer parts very much at one time to keep from eating the chisel, right?

this stuff is amazing to me. fabulous art again!!

  • Yes always take it nice and easy.

  • thanks for video. amazing

  • Thanks,
