2:19 I have a copy of Video Checkers on the Atari 2600 that has that same issue. It says to play it with the paddle controllers, but it only works with the joystick controllers.
This was actually the 2nd videogame i've ever played at home (the 1st was Space Invaders for the 2600).Seeing it now it may seem archaic ,but through its simplicity there's still a lot of fun to be had in this one.I remember playing the heck out of it with all its game variations. And the cover for this game rocks.
@johnwx777 Great game! It was also 1 of the 1st games released. I think it was like 2nd or 3rd, w/combat being 1st, & Video Olympics being 2nd/3rd, I remember playing this with my dad & grandfather & grandparents house, when I was like 6 or 7yo. It was so fun. You can't compare modern/vintage games. THIS is all there was then, & you can't miss when you never had. Early Atari gaming, was often literally a "family" gaming experience. Kids/Parents played together. You don't see that today.
Don't know if it's been stated here, but it's cool that the 1986 label had "Air-Sea" (with the dash between the words); to me, that was a correction from the older label.
Becuase over time they decided to change the labels. Also atari sold the 2600 through sears for a while and thats where most of the text label games come from.
There were a handful or more of 1986 re-Releases that had typos on the labels. Most of those that had typos, had a small black sticker that went over it. I know I have a Basic Programming catridge with a sticker, and underneath, it says something like "For use with Paddle Controllers".
Jack Tramel said "We've no longer a games company. Now we make computers." He followed that policy for about a year, until he ran out of money, and then he released the 2600junior and 7800 because Games were a giant cash cow.
This game made me jealous for some reason like a friend had this game, yet I've never owned it and still don't actually properly :(
It was also called Target Fun when released as the Sears Roebuck and Co company. "Tele Games" label. I don't know where it came from. I might have got it with the Atari 7800 I got off eBay. But I'm not sure. So I still really don't own Air Sea Battle. Just Target Fun.
Guys im 28 and live in the uk and i remember my older brother had a ZX-Spectrum, and my first computer was a Commadore 64, that was in about 1990'ish. Then all my school chums got Omega500's and I was the odd one out with an Atari-520-ST i had a cool F16 fighter simulator on that. Then around 1995? the PS1 arrived and with it DOOM and F1 driver:) Happy days. Ive never had a PS2, i sway'd for the Xbox instead so have old Xbox and just got an xbox 360. Will be saving for PS3 for later in year.
Lol. I'll admit Mark, for some of us younger gamers like myself, who grew up with the Mega Drive and Game Boy, I can't fault your love for Retro games. I myself love the original Sonic's and Streets of Rage games.
When I start reviewing games I will attempt to be as good as you. You can make 20 year old game seem as interesting as a newer game. Which is very hard to do.
i agree. it's far more interesting to learn about games via the classics. unless you learn about the classic games, you'll never be able to fully understand or appreciate modern ones!
But you probable grew up on these games. I grew up on NES and N64 games meaning I hate the Atari graphics. Yet I still find them interesting after watching classic game room. =)
Actually I'm 25 and grew up with the NES. That doesn't mean that you have to hate Atari graphics. By hating a game for it's graphics you are only hurting yourself. You will miss out on many many great games.
if you can stand stuff due to graphics (framerate is another story) then you are missing out. I grew up on PS1 and 2 and I still find these games fun and appealing!
Graphic's are not as meaningful to games as gameplay. But I still enjoy games with better graphics more. I am not missing out on anything, I just prefer newer games to older ones.
@InecomCompany when i frist read what you said i thought you ment (god sucks) then i realized that im just took a bong hit an im high an can't read up to par when im high.
I loved Air Sea battle, it was the first Atari game I ever played. My top two favorites are Warlords and Air Sea Battle, my god I love warlords, so damn addictive.
There is an Atari 2600 collection available for Xbox and PS2. We reviewed the Xbox version. It is awesome. Get it now, don't wait, run run run!!! -CGRHD
does anyone know of a way to do the voice effect mark uses to make the game fade softer when he talks, then fades back louder when he is done? is there a way to do this with free software?
I do it manually with the volume controls, there is some expensive stuff out there that will do it for you (on radio for instance) but with short 6 minute videos you can do it with keyframes and manual movements. -CGRHD
like move farther away from the microphone? I never thought of that! great idea! il try that in my next review! any ideas for an atari 2600 game to review?

The serial number is CW2602.
That means this was the SECOND released game for the Atari. We're talking about very primitive (but fun) game program.
harleykman 2 years ago 9
Not second release, but it was assigned that production number.
Surround was product number CX-2641 and it was one of the original 9 release games in 77.
Just saying, #2 in development listing, not in actual release. I do think it was one of the 77 or 78 games, though. :D

That was when Jack Tramiel owned Atari. I think they just got lazy and didn't care anymore

Hey Mark, are you considering Battlefield: Bad Company for another game to review?
Indead 3 years ago
Bad Company isn't much good dude, no point in reviewing. Average story, poor control etc.
CenturyGamer 3 years ago
I just figured the destructable environments, and in my opinion, the fantastic multiplayer, would be something Mark would enjoy a lot.
Indead 3 years ago
Lol i think the multiplayer isn't much of a big thing but whatever. Mediocre game.
