umm you get the xbox live gold membership from any 360 gaming store, or where you can buy 360 accessories..you will need to be hooked up to a router, but an ethernet cable is provided with the 360 ( a cable connecting your 360 to your router) i believe what you saw at wal mart was a "wireless network adapter" which is how you connect to your router wireless, it plugs in to your xbox. - so this may be necessary if your xbox is on a different floor then your computer/router.
