The place for the sex ought to be in Act I, Scene 3 (where it's instead hidden!!). These are supposed to be lady-convicts in transit, being marched long hard days in brutal weather conditions - no place for brothel-scenes like this in Act IV the way they're shown here!!!
So many of these opera and theatre "directors" ought to be shot!!!! [And looking at the ladies' bodies, much as it's titillating, is NOT what the opera is all about...]
@wbarco: I don't know how well you know this opera (something yours truly happens to know quite well in fact); however, one thing I CAN say is that what these stage-directors do is absolutely contrary to what SHOULD be done here!!! I've NO patience with what people think in terms of trashing, raping, etc. to the spirit of a work.
@LJBSasha I know it very well. I'm saying that while you may think that this is raping or trashing the spirit of the work there are plenty of people that think a director has a right to recontextualize a work and offer new interpretations and meanings.
@wbarco: then let them make it VERY CLEAR that it's NOT a production for traditionalists like myself!!! This is a sort of Communism where they simply to aggrandise themselves at the composer's and/or librettist's expenses and rule the roost as it were!!!!
Those who want this kind of thing ought to have their own SEPARATE theatres and orchestras: I'd NEVER tolerate having anything to do with this BULLS--T!!!!! Better to be poor and honest, than to PROSTITUTE yourself to this kind of JUNK!!
That's why I've stopped going to the opera where I live! I don't need to either support or have anything to do with such good-for-nothing directors!! Let such opera-companies go bankrupt - with greatest pleasure!!!!
To repeat what I have quoted elsewhere: There is no shortage of ideas here; unfortunately none of them have anything to do with the opera.

@LJBSasha I think this speaks more about you than the director, if you find this titillating.
