@Missinsumthin yes if you want the connections to not fall apart all the time. soldering's easy and as long as you don't touch the tip, you can't hurt yourself. even if you do it will be barely noticeable as a burn

@adolfolicious the best way of making these is to use soldering and really it isn't dangerous as long as you don't touch the tip. and if you do get burned, it's nothing compared to a sunburn or that sort of thing. I wanted to make the speakers to face me so that I could hear clearly what was going on in a movie or whatnot. I never made it permanent so that's why I only taped it on.

Thanks, but really you didn't have to subscibe. I barely post any videos here but I appreciate it. Yeah I think you can hook it up directly. That's what I have in my bedroom right now and apparently you don't have to turn it up to the max to get the right volume. Still, for battery life and for higher quality sound, using an amplifier would be best.

This is more of a way to make use of old junk like some speakers in the house, though buying new ones just for this might not be worth it. The wires are cheap and the speakers can be any type you want. For the speakers I used, I ripped them out of two old cell phones so that might be a bit harder to get.

The power comes from the iPod's speaker connection. You don't need separate power from a battery or anything. It works exactly the same way your headphones work when you plug them in, except that the speakers I used were meant to be loudspeakers so that there is less resistance in the speaker coils than in headphone coils.

I'm sorry but from what I know so far, real subwoofers or even bassy speakers have to be fairly large and consume a lot of power. and even then they would be very hard to notice. all of the speakers I used are more like tweeters rather than mid-tone drivers.
