@maisie140 Our magpies are rescues that have come via the local wildlife hospital where we volunteered. It's illegal in the UK to take birds from the wild unless for rehab purposes with the intention of releasing them if possible. If magpies in your garden are becoming friendly with you, I would advise enjoying your relationship wth them but not trying to bring one inside as a pet. You could also find your local wildlife centre to volunteer at.
I have 2 magpies that visit my balcony every morning. They sit on the door handles and peck the window at about 7:20am. I dont mind it, apart from when i am having a lay in :)
bombshelly02.Did the bird have paralysis of the legs or not ? I mean its something you would have noticed yourself ie: if he couldnt stand, walk ,or grip anything with his feet then i could understand the vets actions. The bird was beyond help.But if the bird was mobile then it would appeare the vet killed it because he didnt like Magpies and personally i wouldnt be happy letting him get away with it.
What is it about sleepy birds? I have a quaker parrot and when he is sleepy, he seems to be so tolerant of me. I can pet him and kiss him, (which I can do when he is awake but not always to the greatest response) and he seems so warm, he gives little clicks which I take to be either annoyance or appreciation, I'm not sure, I think he likes it. Love the long tail, Aussie maggies have a shorter tail, and a longer beak. He actually looks more like an Australian Butcher Bird.
I recently rescued an injured magpie. I fed him for 2 days and tamed him he was beautiful. When I managed to get him to a vet, the vet said he had paralysis of the legs and put him down. I still don't believe this. The vet reminded me about a magpie's lifestyle and how they raid birds nests etc. I still feel I let him down.
I'm so sorry to hear your magpie didn't make it :( I think I would have liked a second opinion on the legs, or an explanation of how the paralysis occurred and why there was no hope for him, and I think your vet may have been prejudiced against magpies from the sound of what he said. A magpie is no more evil than, say, a sparrowhawk (but I know which I'd rather have in the garden!!).
Wow brilliant footage, loved it !

I could be wrong, but that looks like a 'magpie' lark and not a magpie (we have a couple here that visit us) - either way, awesome video!

@PodeCoet Nope, definitely a magpie! The magpies we have in the UK are different to the ones in Australia.

@CapnBlackbird
Ahh! My apologies, they do look entirely different. Damn brits, modifying our magpies and stealing our women!

All magpies are Corvids along with crows, ravens, rook and, believe it or not, even blue jays.

It takes a lot of toys to keep something with a high IQ and low attention span occupied! He might just be a *little* spoiled though ;)
Chook might need rendering unconscious before you can kiss him, but I'll bet you get a lot of snuggles out of Spoggy!
