My husband is the manager at a Hookah cafe and he uses a needle or toothpick to make small holes and lots of them. When we prepare our own hookah at home we sprinkle the tabacco into the bowl to make it looser and we clean the hookah each week. I think cleaning the hookah with pipe cleaners makes the biggest difference.

i've seen them make the bottom bit that you fill with water with a water melon. look it up it looks crazy!
