It's an asian thing. In Asia many musicians want you to focus on the music and not their looks. So they often dress up in costumes or wear masks to hide there faces. You'll notice this trend on many asian musicians on youtube.

I think it's more of a gimmick for musicians than anything. You want people to remember who you are and bring more attention to you, so you have some outstanding trait embellished for your stage show.  Think Buckethead and Slash, for instance.
