that was the day, analog tv died.. I heard the broadcasters singing "Bye bye miss American Pye I drove my chevy to the levy but the levy was dry, them good ole' boys getting laid off sighed singing this will be the day that I die, this would be the day that I die"
I'm not normally susceptible to things like this, but I actually found that a bit unnerving. Just the thought that after that chintzy 'Goodbye' that television will never, ever, ever show anything but static again. Ever.
I miss analog tv. I miss adjusting the antennas to get reception and putting tinfoil on the tips. I miss having to turn the knob just right and holding it there with a pencil put under it just to get PBS. Analog tv was something that you didn't just watch, you had to sometimes work with it too. I was only born in 1997, but i'm glad that I got to participate in watching analog tv before it was gone.
that looked like a Goldstar 12 inch B and W TV set.The one i had was a Midland/GS Clone TV set,but did not use it to watch the analog shutdown when it happened.Stations in My Area shutdown at various times:WATE chose Midnight, while WBIR chose 1 pm eastern, and Fox 45 chose about the same time and then WBIR elected to go off at around Noon that day of Friday June 12,2009.brainy at BMSS
W3XE Philco Television, the Prewar experimental callsign used when this became Philadelphia's first TV station in the 1930s. In 1941 it became WPTZ, still run by Philco. In around 1955 it became WRCV, run by RCA. In 1965 it took the current callsign of KYW when Westinghouse moved in. Using their first test pattern, now that was a touch of class.
I came here from TVTropes. While this video is kinda creepy, for some reason, all I can think of now is the Max Headroom Pirating Incident, which serves as major Nightmare Retardant to me. "I stole CBS", indeed!
A 12 inch Sanyo Black and white set manufactured in about 1977 Korea.... interesting how the stock black frame around the tube is painted white, on this one, those sets had a good tuner for long distance reception or for DXing
Sad to see it and all the others go. KYW in Philadelphia went off in a classy manner, using a retro test pattern with the 1st callsign of W3XE, Philco Television which they used in the 1930s. They became WPTZ around 1941, WRCV in 1955 (estimate) and in 1965, became KYW. Until the early 1990s, they were an NBC station. I wonder if any other stations did a salute to history when they went off??
White noise. If I listen to that to long I stare into space like a zombie. and apparently to long is like 6 seconds. It also makes my pupils dilate and my focus blur. I also don't pay attention to what's going on outside my mind, even if someone was running at me with a knife.
@OhMyGodProductions0 - BTW, most of the static is made internally in the set's circuits since it is VHF/UHF but in the snow is also elements of the echo of "The Big Bang" among other interstellar/intergalactic space sources, there are times I like to think that I'm getting closer to God and Creation of the Universe within the static. Sounds crazy, I know, but who knows how long some of that noise has been travelling only to reach your antenna.
My family used to have a TV like that. It was really neat. I wish we still had it, but what would we do with it? Let it continue to collect dust? We can't get cable where I live. (We donated it BTW, so hopefully it's in the loving hands of a collector or something now)
@Arbeelooessix thats the philco experimental logo, which is what was used when this channel was first started, before philco went defunct and cbs bought it.
It's a pretty neat effect, but the badly painted TV and background kind of take away some of the, I don't know, naturalness. Like it was meant to be unnerving, and that somehow made it less so.
I think it would have been a lot more unsettling if you had somehow missed all the warnings in the year before the switch. XD;; Still, it is a little erm... disquieting.
...but why do I find the guy in 0:14 holding that "Zappos!"-sign or whatever even more disturbing? Granted, I don't know what it's about, actually, but it still doesn't make sense to me...
Wow. That is nightmarish. I used to find the sound of TV static soothing if it was low. Hell, I used the white noise of the static to sleep once. This may be the damn creepiest thing I've ever seen. The apocalypse won't be scary, only the shit leading up to it.
I like this sign off. much better than either treating it like any other event (newscasters in the engineering room to push the button = no), or not doing anything at all about it.
those people have no soul. but this, this is awesome!
0:06 "If you're watching KWT-TV will switch to digital is happening now." Why they show from Philco's W3XE on the first? Right way: Current logo to 1st logo to message "Goodbye" in black screen and no logo.
Imgine your alone all of your stuff is on when you woke up everything was off and the tv was on and you see the CBS logo and it says goodbye it will come closer and closer and you woke up
Oh, by the way...W3XE was CBS3's original name! The station was owned by Philco, and it would later be WPTZ-TV. NBC would own the station in the 50s, and it was known as WRCV-TV, then Group W brought KYW back to channel 3 & 1060, and on 9/11/95, CBS bought KYW 3 & 1060. The CBS eye and the 'goodbye' was CBS' way of thanking eyeryone for watching Pennsylvania's first TV station the last 68 years.
