  • Didn't theses 80s TVs end in 2000

  • and yet the channel is still there lol

  • when the digital switch over happens in nz i will be there filming it

  • for 1 second at 0:13 there's a man holding a sign (or box) saying Zappos! on it. Is this an ad, goodbye signal or what?

  • Snowy Screen of Death brought me here.

  • funny white tv

  • is that an old Toshiba or Sharp tv set?

  • ¿Y por que aparece ese hombre en el minuto 0:14 con el letrero "Zappos"?

  • >reference TVTropes

    >be annoying

  • damn creepy

  • I'm not normally susceptible to things like this, but I actually found that a bit unnerving. Just the thought that after that chintzy 'Goodbye' that television will never, ever, ever show anything but static again. Ever.

  • @FoxGroundsman They could always use a converter box. Granted, the converter may need a converter to actually hook it up, but it's possible.

  • that was cool

  • Thumbs up if you're here NOT because of TV Tropes

  • Why can't they just let us enjoy the simple things in life and not throw them aside for something else?

  • I miss analog tv. I miss adjusting the antennas to get reception and putting tinfoil on the tips. I miss having to turn the knob just right and holding it there with a pencil put under it just to get PBS. Analog tv was something that you didn't just watch, you had to sometimes work with it too. I was only born in 1997, but i'm glad that I got to participate in watching analog tv before it was gone.

  • Painted over television :-D

  • @Renatodonadio looks they used house paint

  • :(

  • "Goodbye"... and that was the last time the government told us anything truthful.

  • CBS Logo

    Good bye

  • its funny how the it says goodbye just as analog is switched off

  • The static isn't creepy. What is creepy is that room. Why is everything white?

  • @TheMidnightPastry thats what made the video tho lol

  • that looked like a Goldstar 12 inch B and W TV set.The one i had was a Midland/GS Clone TV set,but did not use it to watch the analog shutdown when it happened.Stations in My Area shutdown at various times:WATE chose Midnight, while WBIR chose 1 pm eastern, and Fox 45 chose about the same time and then WBIR elected to go off at around Noon that day of Friday June 12,2009.brainy at BMSS

  • Thumbs up if the static scared the shit out of you.

  • 0:40

Oh god that logo used to scare the fuck out of me as a child. I'm an adult and it still scares the shit out of me.

  • @zperra Yep. It looks like an eye and it feels like it's watching you.

  • Why?!

  • Wow. That's kinda sad. [sniff, sniff] R.I.P. analog. It was great while it lasted, esp. the adjusting the vertical hold and rabbit ears.

  • HONF troper tales

  • W3XE Philco Television, the Prewar experimental callsign used when this became Philadelphia's first TV station in the 1930s. In 1941 it became WPTZ, still run by Philco. In around 1955 it became WRCV, run by RCA. In 1965 it took the current callsign of KYW when Westinghouse moved in. Using their first test pattern, now that was a touch of class.

  • But...the future refused to change.

  • @ChiTsumai AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ~underlying beep, slowly growing louder~ AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH- xStaticx

  • Vote this up if Tv Tropes bright you here.

For me it was Hell is That Noise.

  • @StargirlzProuctions I'm here from Last Note Nightmare.

  • @StargirlzProuctions

Am I the only one from Nothing Is Scarier?

  • @StargirlzProuctions HONF troper tales for me.

  • @StargirlzProuctions Mine was Last Note Nightmare. X3

  • @StargirlzProuctions Last note nightmare

  • @StargirlzProuctions Snowy Screen of Death.

  • @StargirlzProuctions TV Tropes brought me here from "Last Note Nightmare".

  • @StargirlzProuctions I got here via "Last Note Nightmare"

  • @StargirlzProuctions Got here from "Snowy Screen of Death"

  • @StargirlzProuctions I got here from Last Note Nightmare.

  • That "goodbye" thing was creepy

  • @andipoetic ha i agree xD

  • I bet the drowned girl from The Ring had to switch to digital.

  • I came here from TVTropes. While this video is kinda creepy, for some reason, all I can think of now is the Max Headroom Pirating Incident, which serves as major Nightmare Retardant to me. "I stole CBS", indeed!

  • Came here from Troper Tales High Octane Nightmare Fuel page!

  • A 12 inch Sanyo Black and white set manufactured in about 1977 Korea.... interesting how the stock black frame around the tube is painted white, on this one, those sets had a good tuner for long distance reception or for DXing

  • Troper Tales, Hell Is That Noise :P

  • I'm here from Nightmare Last Note. Sadly, this didn't give me the nightmares I expected.

  • HONF Troper Tales page!

  • goodbye

  • my channel is inclolur and still in analog!

  • Game Over

  • I want to know why you painted your TV white. There's even some paint on the screen itself.

  • watching

  • Not even a combination of Bioshock, Metro 2033 and TVtropes could be that creepy.

  • Goodbye, analog.

  • That was so scary i almost forgot to bring my popcorn.

Also i think i've been trolled by TvTropes

  • "Goodbye"

    Tsssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

BOOM! (What could happen on That Day...)

  • GOOD GOD, THE SKIN TAKER!

  • Sad to see it and all the others go. KYW in Philadelphia went off in a classy manner, using a retro test pattern with the 1st callsign of W3XE, Philco Television which they used in the 1930s. They became WPTZ around 1941, WRCV in 1955 (estimate) and in 1965, became KYW. Until the early 1990s, they were an NBC station. I wonder if any other stations did a salute to history when they went off??

  • Hey, what's up with that kid's show starting at 0:49? Something about a little girl and puppet pirates? Anyone else see this?

  • @Ganall

    The screaming

    my god

    the screaming

  • @Ganall redruM redruM redruM! ;-)

  • @Ganall Shouldn't it have been taken out of reruns by then? (If you don't get the joke, search "Candle Cove" on Google.)

  • @Ganall No i think you're just seeing things. :/

  • 2012

  • White noise. If I listen to that to long I stare into space like a zombie. and apparently to long is like 6 seconds. It also makes my pupils dilate and my focus blur. I also don't pay attention to what's going on outside my mind, even if someone was running at me with a knife.

  • @OhMyGodProductions0 - BTW, most of the static is made internally in the set's circuits since it is VHF/UHF but in the snow is also elements of the echo of "The Big Bang" among other interstellar/intergalactic space sources, there are times I like to think that I'm getting closer to God and Creation of the Universe within the static. Sounds crazy, I know, but who knows how long some of that noise has been travelling only to reach your antenna.

  • Sooooooooo scary... TVTROPES FOOLED ME!

  • i always picture shapes when i look at static, it's like looking at clouds... i miss analog :S

  • UMBRELLA CORPS IS COMING TO GET US ALL!!

  • This made me want to cry. RIP analog. :(

My family used to have a TV like that. It was really neat. I wish we still had it, but what would we do with it? Let it continue to collect dust? We can't get cable where I live. (We donated it BTW, so hopefully it's in the loving hands of a collector or something now)

  • @LuigiGodzillaGirl ya i got it and i raped it... sorry

  • tvtropes

  • This makes me sad. RIP analog. :( The goodbye is what gets me.

  • This is haunting.

  • Brought to you by Umbrella?

  • @Arbeelooessix thats the philco experimental logo, which is what was used when this channel was first started, before philco went defunct and cbs bought it.

it truely is a classy way to go.

  • Why is the television painted like that...? What the hell?

  • No national anthem? Seems anticlimactic.

  • OH LOOK CANDLE COVE IS ON :U

  • Am I the only person who wasn't creeped out by this in some way?

  • One of the eeriest things I think I will ever see.

  • The "Goodbye" at the end will be used again during the 2012 broadcast.

  • W3XE?

  • You're watching KYW TV, the end of the world is happening now!

  • The T.V. station should have played "Maybe" by the Inkspots before cutting to static, now THAT would've caused people to shit bricks.

  • They did what the Max Headroom impersonator from 1987 could only claim to have done...they stole CBS!!

  • That was kinda sad.. and creepy.

  • Omg! Guys, Candle Cover came on! Haven't seen that show in forever ^.^

  • Wait, what's this puppet show? Why are they all screaming?

  • The end of an era...

  • "Add more Living to your life."

Cue the apocalypse moments later. Oh, irony.

It's a pretty neat effect, but the badly painted TV and background kind of take away some of the, I don't know, naturalness. Like it was meant to be unnerving, and that somehow made it less so.

  • The sound of static is everywhere all the time, but it's only on the TV or radio that you're able to hear it. It's the echoes of the big bang.

  • The apocalypse, brought to you by CBS.

  • I think it would have been a lot more unsettling if you had somehow missed all the warnings in the year before the switch. XD;; Still, it is a little erm... disquieting.

  • Creepy as fuck...

...but why do I find the guy in 0:14 holding that "Zappos!"-sign or whatever even more disturbing? Granted, I don't know what it's about, actually, but it still doesn't make sense to me...

  • @Larrylarp OMFG yes. That is absolutely terrifying.

  • Goodbye. Have fun in Hell.

  • Wow...thats creepy

  • Comment removed

  • So, who's here from TV Tropes?

  • @AniRemi Me :D

  • @AniRemi That would be me.

  • @AniRemi *raises hand*

  • @AniRemi and me

  • @AniRemi

    I am.

  • @AniRemi Yo.

  • @AniRemi This Troper is :D

  • @AniRemi I am!

  • @AniRemi yup.

  • @AniRemi me.

  • @AniRemi *high-five*

  • @AniRemi me too dude!

  • @AniRemi What was the trope about, TV stations' last analog airings?

  • @SirFakeName It was in the Troper Tales section of Hell Is That Noise (as a demonstration of just how creepy static can be). :)

  • @AniRemi I'm here from the Troper Tales section of High Octane Nightmare Fuel :D

  • @LoIzords I'm here from Hell Is That Noise. Nice to meet ya, troper! :D

  • @AniRemi Me, and lemme tell you. Scared. I am going to have nightmares. T.T

  • @AniRemi Hell noise Troper Tales.

  • Darken the room, don't include the switch warning, and just have the show cut to the goodbye, then to the static. Now THAT would be creepy

  • @Icalasari The static for a while...and then the TV turns off.

  • Wow. That is nightmarish. I used to find the sound of TV static soothing if it was low. Hell, I used the white noise of the static to sleep once. This may be the damn creepiest thing I've ever seen. The apocalypse won't be scary, only the shit leading up to it.

  • Holy shit....

I never knew static could be so frightening...

  • I think it's a very nice effect, but by no means do I find it unsettling.

  • How is this scary? Sad maybe, but scary? Not really.

  • What is it about static-y TVs that's just so damn creepy?

  • ...That's it, I'm using something like this if I ever decide to make a horror film.

  • Still kinda creepy that the last thing you saw/heard was an eye staring at you in an otherwise black screen as white noise/static comes on.

  • The war against Giygas is over...

  • I like this sign off. much better than either treating it like any other event (newscasters in the engineering room to push the button = no), or not doing anything at all about it.

those people have no soul. but this, this is awesome!

  • Shoot, I was watching TV when they switched too. Why didn't I think of recording it?! D:

  • War. War never changes.

  • They're heeeere......

  • Ugly paint job you got there.

  • Inside the circle 0:10 Appears "Philco Television" It is older in upper side and just type in computer below!

  • 0:06 "If you're watching KWT-TV will switch to digital is happening now." Why they show from Philco's W3XE on the first? Right way: Current logo to 1st logo to message "Goodbye" in black screen and no logo.

  • Painted TV!

  • Imgine your alone all of your stuff is on when you woke up everything was off and the tv was on and you see the CBS logo and it says goodbye it will come closer and closer and you woke up

  • White noise makes me go wide eyed and stare into space......That's probably what zombies hear.

  • It's actually pretty disturbing... :O

  • NOOOOO I WANTED TO SEE THE ZAPDOS AD

  • So depressing....

  • I laughed.Thats a really evil way to swtich from analog to digital.

  • Has a small element of GlaDoS to it at the end (Reference: Portal - Game on PC)

  • makes me cry i collect old tvs and they are all vhf sets and i wish analog will stay but looks like my dream is no longer going to happen

  • Oh, by the way...W3XE was CBS3's original name! The station was owned by Philco, and it would later be WPTZ-TV. NBC would own the station in the 50s, and it was known as WRCV-TV, then Group W brought KYW back to channel 3 & 1060, and on 9/11/95, CBS bought KYW 3 & 1060. The CBS eye and the 'goodbye' was CBS' way of thanking eyeryone for watching Pennsylvania's first TV station the last 68 years.

  • Holy fucking shit.

  • Goodbye.

Gah, I can't even watch static like that without thinking that there's an outline of a face in there... (S)He's watching me!

  • I saw it there just now because you said that. Now (s)he's behind me.

  • The CBS logo just makes it even weirder.

  • er, yes, creepy.

  • ...But the future refused to change.

  • *Lavos'_eldrich_scream.mp3*

  • @ViremasterOfUSA That's...disturbing, but oddly awesome.

  • "Goodbye." *static*

Wow, am I the only one who thinks something like that should be used in a horror film just before some guy crashes through a window with a knife or chainsaw or some other murder device?

  • Excellent touch, using the old test pattern with their original call letters of W3XE.

  • @MrUnidyne W3XE was a Philco Television then, they change to KYW because CBS bought it!

  • ...so, apparently this channel was brought to us by the Umbrella Corporation?

  • holy crap, your right

  • Zappos!

  • that tv is like the one i had in my room at ymca in 1994-1996

  • good lord, that's eerie.

  • Its Creepy when its like"Goodbye"and then it shuts the analog off.

  • I wonder if this is what you see when you die. A religious symbol with "goodbye" underneath, and you spend eternity in a void of static.

  • @POOPTURTLE - Worst afterlife ever.

  • @POOPTURTLE That's totally what happens. It makes perfct sense.

    Moron.

  • It's called a sense of humor.

  • @POOPTURTLE

kinda reminds me of Myst 1, with those two guys in the books of red/blue static for all eternity

  • Don't let them rip the pages out on you, lol.

  • @POOPTURTLE lol

  • You ARE the weakest link. Good-bye!

  • did you paint your tv?
