nice review, very usefull....Dude please tell me what that tripod is called(in which the camera is placed) rather than the old one's????with the screw type thingy
I would go for the D7000 for sure.... its a much better camera that does everything in a better way.. D90 is a good camera to be a first DSLR though but i would recommend the D7000 for its better features, the thing that makes it compete with the D300s !! D7000 FTW XD
i saw the d7000 body for 950$ is this a good deal??
my dad has an olympus ep-3 so maybe i should just get the epl-3 so we can switch lens together. 1 more thing can i take my lens from a d70 to use it on a d7000?? please answer
D90 is a thing of the past ,these are electronics and after 5 yrs nearly 60% improved cameras keep coming ,I like your review but you should compare the D7000 with the D300s as you mentioned, the D7000 has a great new auto focus system and a much better ISO performance which actually matters,I'll always pick the D7000 and will leave the D700 even if it's FX and all but as for now D7000 is the top pick if one can afford it or go for the D5100 which has the same sensor of the D7000 but no motor
I have both a D90 and D7000 and the best one camera I have used by far is the D7000 top notch... low light, high ISO best I have seen. Next time show the D90 and D7000 side by side for a better video. Thanks again..
What do You think I should get D90 or D7000? I would love to get D7000 but I don't think I need it. I'm thinking about getting D90 but should I save up and buy D7000? I'm not a pro and not planning on becoming one I just really like photography and would like to get a decent dslr. One more question will Nikon Nikkor Af-S lens 50mm F1.8 work with D90?
@MrPlaystationboy replacement for the d90, the d300s has better build and is quicker, but only the most extreme outdoor photographers really need a d300s build.
@QQQQcon Dont agree with you at all on this. For the difference of the price between the D90 and D7000 I would recommend to get the D90 and the 35 1.8G and 50 1.8G or the 85 1.8D.. these lens will help get better pics than what the D7K can do alone. Those improvements are only features which help in managing and not really taking better pics. the only feature i find worthwhile is the dual Memory card but still not worth the price diff..all IMHO
Didn't Nikon said that the D7000 is not a replacement of the D90? Im confuse here.. Isn't the D7000 is some sort like a new lineup of nikon like how the D5000 came in with its line up of swivel LCD? which then later will have D7100?? (just saying)...
I have had my d90 for a year and a half. Love it but I think I'm going to sell it and get the d7000. I have started photographing sports and I think the higher iso for the night practice along with a few more megapixels will make it easier to crop a little if my lens isn't long enough. But anybody looking that can't afford the 7000 get the d90 before the 5100. I had the d5000 for a few weeks and returned it for the 90 mainly because the 90 h
How can you compare two dissimilar cams ? D90 introduce on 2008 and D7000 on 2010 off course d7000 has better sensor and technology over d90. Let people who already have d90 to by happy with it and the one that they gonna get d7000 to be happy twice.
@ctenochaetus they arent dissimilar, the d7000 is the d90 replacement thus people may want to know what new advantages the d7000 has over it predecessor. makes perfect sense.
Well I bought the D90 and have no complaints, I ordered the d700, but it was on backorder for 3 months so I finally cancelled the ordered. Before I was shooting with my d70 and a d40x. I bought it to save money, because I hear soon a d800 is in the pipeline, with estimated 35 megapixel and video.
As described earlier d90 is for amateur to pro.. D7000 is for pro but to basic for it's features.... That is why d90 has high rating because u get good value for money with features fit for pro...
With all the hype about the camera, do any of the viewers take into serious consideration that the quality of the lens plays an even bigger role in the quality of your images? The D90 is a great start to shooting successful projects, paired with quality glass, proper lighting and a stable exposure (ie a tripod) I think that people would do better by buying a new D90 (warranty) and a couple very good used lenses. Its the image not the camera that matters.
I have used my D90 for a number of commercial projects, including magazine shoots, covers, portraits etc. I have no problem with the quality and neither do my clients. I don't need superfast focus (my subjects aren't moving) nor do I need video. I don't find the upgrades in the D7000 all that significant for me, but I would consider buying one. If I wanted an increase in quality I would go and shoot 6x7 film, since I already have the equipment and save the $1100.
I am considering buying a dslr. I have learnt that Lenses are a pretty important part of a Dslr and can make a whole lot of difference. So I have been researching and made packages of a body and lens that are under my budget. I have narrowed it to:
1. Canon 60D +EF S18-135 F/3.5-5.6 + 50MM /1.8 II
2.Nikon d90 + AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8g + AF S Dx Nikkor 18-10 mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR5.8
3.Nikkon D7000 kit
Which one should I choose? any other combinations? Potrait Photos +normal use. THANKS
D7K is WAAAAY better than the D90, stop trying to find excuses if you don't have $1,200 get a D90 and don't say is better than D7K because it is not. I have it with a battery grip and 35mm 1.8g and my pictures are AMAZING!! i was debating between the D7K and D300s, the only thing better on the D300s is the size which is why I got the battery grip, extra battery and still ended up spending less then what the D300s body cost. don't get the 18-105mm get a $200 35mm 1.8g and see what the D7K can do!
@l0v3y0u19: Hey Amazon is selling it for $750 while Nikon website has a refurbished one at $ 719. Having used D90, even a pre-owned performs like new. You can find plenty used at $600 on craiglist. Goodluck.
@scupking i paid 600.00 for mine, baddest cam ive ever had. i own a dslr to take pictures not video 1080p doesnt excite me too much. i also can't justify 20+ focus points. only thing i'd like about d7k over d90 is the 100% viewfinder.
Thats nice but I don't take video with my DSLR, I take it with my nice 1080P Canon HD video camera. I have been very happy with my D90. I bought it to take pictures and it takes awesome pictures!!
the sport photography choice still be the D300s majorly because of the buffer of D7000 not big enough to allow high frame speed and SD is has slower speed compared to CF card.
i was about to buy a d90 butto thinking of it d7000 seems better but the d700 that my friend had was very good but now i don't know arrrrrrgggg so cmplicated for a first good camera
aaarrrrgggghhhh...what to buy? i initially thought D5100 is great for a beginner like me but my friends recommended D90 which is more expensive and reviews say it is more for a PRO, which i wish to attain (at least pro-thusiast). Then this D7000 which vs amazon price is same here PH (normally so much more expensive here). i just wonder how long it would take me to maximize the investment if i get D7000.
hi i have d7000 mounted with 35mm 1.8 and my friend has d90 with the kit lens the image quality of d90 is sharper than mine i dont know whats wrong with my cam i even tried shooting in a same settings...do you think the memory card will change the quality of the photos in future shooting?
Thank you! thats what i was looooking for! A reaaallly big thanks for this review... But, um.. get a manikure or something.... WOMEN do look at hands..
What's the point of multiple autofocus points if you can simply hold the autofocus point on the subject, hold the shutter halfway, then recompose the image?
Ive just sold my very first dslr which was d3000 and looking for an upgrade. You uploading this video really helped. Most of my friends have the d90 but i read some stuff on the internet and after watching your video i think i will get the D7000! thanks bro!
there is issues with this camera(d7000) ,hot pixels.i'm on my second camera already and the store is trying fix it.before you buy this, test it on high iso setting.i'm so disappointed with this.my d60 is still flawless after 2 yrs of torture.

@cheetodude24 in my opinion , the space in between what appears semi expert and pro is little now. d7000 is perhaps all we need. go to... freedsl r . co m remove spaces and try to get an opportunity to win a Brand New Nikon D7000
1) if we want HD VDO then we shud get a VDO camera... If u have a car 99% people will use it to drive , only 1% will use it for stunts... Similarly a still camera is for still images only..
2) We DONT need speed more than 3fps..
3) Apart from the sensor & camera, we are overlooking the lens...We can get a 70-300mm lens or whatever later if we can save the money...
4) U can always get the D3X if u have the extraaaaa money..
@naturalfreakkk go for the d90 because the d5100 doesnt have an autofocus motor. meaning you'll have to buy AF-s lenses in order to get autofocus. d90 has good low iso capabilities not too sure how well the d5100 performs in low light
hi im planning on getting my first DSLR camera in march and i was planning on getting THe D90, is it really worth the wait and money for the D7000?!?!?!
If you are going to purchase a DSLR and are mainly interested in image quality you don't need the D7000 The IQ (image quality) of my 6.1 megapixel ccd sensor antique D70S is on the same level with that of the D7000, and so is the D90.
This megapixel cramming on cropped sensors actually has a degrading effect on image quality.
I find the video on my D90 very good and requires a learning curve because it doesn't Af in video mode.
My D90 can easily shoot at ISO 3200 which is more than enough.
i bought a D90,the video sucks.i droped it and the chase broke..right now its a NIKON were they charged me 354 dollars to ''fix it''..they never said what is it that they are ''fixing'' ..but 3554 dolllars only to replace the plastic face of the D90...i am selling i as soon as i get it back and switching CANON,i feel robbed
Hey Conor, great video. I've been pretty torn between these two models for some time now. It will be my first SLR, and although I'm sure the d90 is great, I don't have a lot to spend, and want to make the purchase count. My question is about the weather sealing. I live in the wet NW, and plan to do my shooting outdoors (hiking, climbing etc). Is there really a significant difference between the sealing on the two, or would I be fine with the d90?
@outdoorsman567 D7000 has a magnesium back reminiscent of higher end models, but is not ALL magnesium. This, however, only makes a difference if the camera should get banged around. Neither the D90 nor the 7000 are weather sealed so if that's what your really interested in, you may want to check out a Pentax K5 or K7 for the price range your in.
I also disagree about the whole thought that "because the 7000 came out, the D90 is going to drop in price". The D90 may be a few years old but is still a relevant camera, one that is still better than a lot of cameras for the money. They are still extremely high in demand, so its going to take a while until you start to see a significant price drop. That aside, the 7000 is not an official replacement for the 90 anyways, its just thought to be because its somewhat similar.
@ClientSeven I do have the facts straight, it does have a plastic body and metal chassis, but many cameras do even some compact cameras so I dont mention it, this chassis is very different from the d7000s build which is much better. arguing about whether something is am amateur or not is pointless and really doesnt matter and I already know the d90 can produce better images than the d300.
Forget canon for video get the Red scarlete forget the mark 2 it's about the same price.....but only if you serious about video....great review d7000 rules....
I've found the D90's video to be very soft. Is this issue corrected with the D7000? I was considering switching to Canon strictly for the video and getting a 5D Mark II
if the price is not far from d300s the il better choose d300s piece of craft the d7000.. still for amatuer...waste of money...il still stick with d90 cos i can get same outcome with that amatuer gold camera and much more...
thank you sir! you have been a great help. i was about to buy d90 but the way you have explained it. am going to wait and hopefully will buy the D7000.
p.s however still tempted to buy d90..... its gorgeous lol
The price of the d90 drops more than a hundred dollars in 1 month alone here in Israel. but it doesn't make any sense to me cos i'm waiting for the d7000 to arrive. finally i got an email notification from reliable online store that they have it in stock... the price blown me away. its ridiculously high.. $2,150!!!! body only! beat that shit!
@opeth84 exactly... If you know what you are doing it's not like you are going to see amazingly better images from a D7000 vs. a D90.
Sure, overall the camera is better, but for still images at low iso you are still going to get amazing images with the D90. The fact that people trash "last years" camera as soon as a new camera is brought out shows that Nikon and Canon's marketing departments are doing a great job.
I keep seeing videos where people say the D7000 has a magnesium alloy body, but only the top and back are magnesium. (google search "d7000 magnesium"). I'm not saying it's not an awesome camera, but I think this is important to know.
yo bro need to know somethin.. you lift weights? lets get together and do some guns

i really need to know if D7k's 9 cross-type focus points worth its price?
i mean,D90's auto focus is far behind of D7k?
i guess 7k s faster and many people say so but what about accuracy?
i wanna buy one of them with tokina 11-16 35mm and 85mm
btw i remember your lovely tokina review...

@scupking that d90 is crapy compared to the d7000.d7000 is full hd which the d90 aint...

Thats nice but I don't take video with my DSLR, I take it with my nice 1080P Canon HD video camera. I have been very happy with my D90. I bought it to take pictures and it takes awesome pictures!!
scupking 3 months ago
@scupking
Same here I'm sure the D7000 is great but I got a D90 still a very good camera might think about a D7k later on.
D90 is quite a lot cheaper and still decent.
barryfitzgerald29 1 month ago
the sport photography choice still be the D300s majorly because of the buffer of D7000 not big enough to allow high frame speed and SD is has slower speed compared to CF card.

i was about to buy a d90 butto thinking of it d7000 seems better but the d700 that my friend had was very good but now i don't know arrrrrrgggg so cmplicated for a first good camera
yun514 8 months ago
aaarrrrgggghhhh...what to buy? i initially thought D5100 is great for a beginner like me but my friends recommended D90 which is more expensive and reviews say it is more for a PRO, which i wish to attain (at least pro-thusiast). Then this D7000 which vs amazon price is same here PH (normally so much more expensive here). i just wonder how long it would take me to maximize the investment if i get D7000.

hi i have d7000 mounted with 35mm 1.8 and my friend has d90 with the kit lens the image quality of d90 is sharper than mine i dont know whats wrong with my cam i even tried shooting in a same settings...do you think the memory card will change the quality of the photos in future shooting?

can we fit a 50mm 1.8d lens and 70-300mmlens?

After some time d7000 will suck compared to some newer model.
Buy such an expensive camera only if you NEED almost 100% of the extras it offers you.

What's the point of multiple autofocus points if you can simply hold the autofocus point on the subject, hold the shutter halfway, then recompose the image?

@kragmutt when you're recompose the image, the moment may have past.

@cheetodude24 in my opinion , the space in between what appears semi expert and pro is little now. d7000 is perhaps all we need. go to... freedsl r . co m remove spaces and try to get an opportunity to win a Brand New Nikon D7000

Excellent review..no 2nd thot on that..
BUT
see the point is
1) if we want HD VDO then we shud get a VDO camera...

@naturalfreakkk D90 is better than the D5100 just saying! But if you can afford it...i would go for the D7000
jeraldy23 6 months ago
@naturalfreakkk go for the d90 because the d5100 doesnt have an autofocus motor. meaning you'll have to buy AF-s lenses in order to get autofocus. d90 has good low iso capabilities not too sure how well the d5100 performs in low light

My D90 can easily shoot at ISO 3200 which is more than enough.
digitaldarkroomimage 1 year ago
i bought a D90,the video sucks.i droped it and the chase broke..right now its a NIKON were they charged me 354 dollars to ''fix it''..they never said what is it that they are ''fixing'' ..but 3554 dolllars only to replace the plastic face of the D90...i am selling i as soon as i get it back and switching CANON,i feel robbed

Thanks
(excellent photos on the website too)!
outdoorsman567 1 year ago
@outdoorsman567 if you take it out into rain or heavy fog or dust it will make a difference in the long run
QQQQcon 1 year ago
@outdoorsman567 D7000 has a magnesium back reminiscent of higher end models, but is not ALL magnesium. This, however, only makes a difference if the camera should get banged around. Neither the D90 nor the 7000 are weather sealed so if that's what your really interested in, you may want to check out a Pentax K5 or K7 for the price range your in.
MK4vDubbin 1 year ago
I also disagree about the whole thought that "because the 7000 came out, the D90 is going to drop in price". The D90 may be a few years old but is still a relevant camera, one that is still better than a lot of cameras for the money. They are still extremely high in demand, so its going to take a while until you start to see a significant price drop. That aside, the 7000 is not an official replacement for the 90 anyways, its just thought to be because its somewhat similar.
MK4vDubbin 1 year ago
I want a d7000. :D
Alvathiger 1 year ago 3
@ClientSeven I do have the facts straight, it does have a plastic body and metal chassis, but many cameras do even some compact cameras so I dont mention it, this chassis is very different from the d7000s build which is much better. arguing about whether something is am amateur or not is pointless and really doesnt matter and I already know the d90 can produce better images than the d300.

The D7000 is two times the price than the D90 and they are not the same category.
The D90 is a great deal nowadays partly because of the D7000.
opeth84 1 year ago 2
@opeth84 exactly... If you know what you are doing it's not like you are going to see amazingly better images from a D7000 vs. a D90.
Sure, overall the camera is better, but for still images at low iso you are still going to get amazing images with the D90. The fact that people trash "last years" camera as soon as a new camera is brought out shows that Nikon and Canon's marketing departments are doing a great job.
