@Glavenator: George Lucas was influenced by the monomyth, especially in his creation of Luke (and Vader). The Hero's Journey is present through many centuries of literature. So, yes, these can all be "chalked up to movie cliches."
However, the last clip (Eowyn and Theodred vs Luke and Vader), is very much a word-for-word, angle for angle copy. Whether this was Peter Jackson's intent is unknowable except to himself.
This video was part of a project about the influences of film and literature.
So let's recap, both movies have a scene where somebody is injured in a one-on-one battle, a scene where they're ambushed in a forest at weapon point, an explosion, a scene where someone is given their father's weapon, and a scene where somebody talks to their dieing father on the ground after a battle.
I'm pretty sure these can all be chalked up to movie cliches, I mean seriously. Given the huge length of both series I'm surprised there aren't more comparable scenes.
I saw Star Wars movies 100x, and only saw Lord of the Rings movies 1x. LOTR was Epic, but come on...
STAR WARS!!! NO CONTEST! Heck, Peter Jackson himself admitted he loves Star Wars! But the books look good, I havn't read them yet, but I'm going to. :P

@korbennelentari Yes, but Peter Jackson took cinemagraphic inspiration from scenes in Star Wars.
