it's ice fishing... the hole is at your feet. there's no reason for a bigger rod. As seen here, a fish that can be brought through an 8 or 10 inch hole, should be landed regardless of the pole size. The question is... why only 5 lb. test on the reel?

there was no illegal practice taken place. yes, it is unlawful to target these fish, but in having only 5 lb. test and a jig smaller than a dime, it was impossible to tell what kind of fish was on the other side until it came through the hole. but note a few considerate things, 1- gloves, rather than bare hands. 2- the gaf was not used. 3- it was cautiously revived and set free. these fish are protected, can live for over 100 years, and can grow to over 7 feet long.
