It aslmost makes me sad to think that we are getting to the point when films like this will almost seem as far removed from the day we are in as films like the original Charlie and the Chocolate factory and Old Yeller were to me when I was getting into my early teens...but the memories still seem fresh! Personally I don't know if you get old when you stop dreaming, you get old when no one else but you remembers. Whilst I am here does anyone have the cool space age end music for this film?
@Johnlindsey289 lol. Well, the actual quote from the TZ movie is " The day we stop playing is the day we start getting old.", but the message still essentially means the same thing.
It's a shame to be so disappointed by something that's had such a big impact for so long: for the last 25 years, every time I rouse myself to start some ambitious new project, I automatically start whistling this music.
Just saw this movie again for the 1st time in 25 years. I must say it doesn't stand the test of time well. The dialogue is atrocious, and the climax an utter copout. Very depressing; and to think I spent the last two & a half decades wondering why this movie hasn't made the same mark on my generation as Stand by Me!
The James Horner score Is awesome though, as is the art direction. Cool spaceships.
@Emanistan Are you kidding me this is one of quissential 80's kids movie, its a insult to say the dialogue was atrocious, WTF you expect be like HAMLET!
From the magazine mentioned in earlier comments by me. I really wish Joe Dante had released a better DVD with ALL the missing and alternate footage. He has a website called Trailers From Hell, I think I'll ask him....
@dingorex The kissing pic was also in the Explorers Storybook. Dante has said he has no idea where the lost footage is now, but he thinks it will never be seen. I think there was a vid of him at a special showing of Explorers somewhere on Youtube,
@dingorex It's a picture book with a shortened version of the story (for kids). They used to be standard releases. Clearly both were taken from the rough version of the script since they both contained material that wasn't in the finished cut. I had mine before the movie was released. Imagine my dismay when I realised the guys didn't go to Lori Swenson's party!
@dingorex You should do that. He speaks about looking for the lost material at the New Beverley Cinema showing (linked in the sidebar) and he says he couldn't find anything.
non so voi ma io con sto film ci sono rimasto sotto sara' perche' l'ho visto da bocia comunque ogni volta che lo guardo mi fa venire la pelle doca sopratutto la parte dove collaudano la navetta..
From a magazine--The Official Explorers Movie magazine from 1985 put out by Starlog Press. Jason Presson should have got an Oscar nod for The Stone Boy.
I'm assuming it is from an alternate ending that has never been released yet. The captions and the text don't mention the part of the movie. The book released had many scenes with Ben and his brother and family that were either never filmed or deleted to the cutting room floor. The "traveling-matte" guy is Ben's brother in the book, FYI. John P Navin?? I think,,, he was the gooch on Diff'rent Strokes.
@dingorex That scene wasn't from the end, it was from the party scene (earlier in the movie): Lori invites Ben to her party after he looks in her bedroom window. The party is after their first flight and the crash at the drive-in. Ben gives her a ring with martian rock in it, and kisses her, but she rejects his advance. The guys then argue on the way home.
He needs to eat more red meat and drink less tea. Isn't he Vegan?
Amanda was in a great Dante directed episode of The Twilight Zone in the fall of1985 called The Shadowman (with Jason Presson) She also did a series called A Year in the Life with Richard Kiley and Adam Arkin in 1986. I've not seen her since. Her voice got deeper throughout the short-lived series, so maybe she lost the WOW factor auditorily, definitely not visually !HUBBA HUBBA!.
@nunofm2005 You're right, I was wrong. But, I think the girl who played Trista, the smart redhead in Ben's science class is an extra in the diner scene.
From the official Explorers magazine from Starlog press dated July 1985. Is Starlog still in print? They may have back issues if they're still around.
im so pissed that last scene where ethan & that girl is kissing wasnt on my d.v.d!!! ugh im seeing all kinds of different version of this movie everywhere why the hell couldnt they all be the same with all the scenes put back in it

The 80s were magic. Even blockbuster wannabees like Explorers had more magic then it knew what to do with.

The score it's from Jerry Goldsmith not James Horner!

@nunofm2005 Yeah, my mistake. It definitely has the Goldsmith sound to it too. Sounds quite similar to the Enterprise theme from Star Trek TMP.
