The reason Cruise didnt learn a German accent is because he's shit. British and American actors always used to put on a German accent if they played a German character in the old war movies. eg Robert Shaw in Battle of the Bulge, or James Mason as Rommel.

The movie was 'transposed' into English FROM German, as was nicely done in the first 2 minutes. You are supposed to use your imagination that the entire cast would have been speaking german in real. The viewer is drawn into their language by the merge at the begnning, so it's as if WE are Germans. So the movie needs ot be totally in OUR language to achieve this. Having them speak with German accents would be meaningless and LESS realistic. If you don't have the brains to 'get' this, too bad.
Speaking English in a German accent is no better than Speaking English in a Californian accent. The Germans didn't speak English at all, so the whole thing is immaterial.

How else should people learn about WW2, if not from books? Sure the majority of Germans didn't work in the ovens, but I'll tell you what just about all of the Nazis were Germans. Not all Americans committed genocide towards the native peoples but the blame is definately on white America. I won't even bring up the current invasion of Iraq.

Naja. Stauffenberg war sicherlich kein heiliger und wie die meisten Offiziere kein Hitler-Gegner solange Deutshland auf dem Vormarsch war. Jedoch war er KEIN anti-semit und wollte den Holocust NICHT weiterführen.
"Sein" Deutschland wäre zwar nicht wirklich Demokratisch gewesen, aber es hätte sich um einen Waffenstillstand bemüht und den Wahnsinn Hitlers mehr oder weniger beendet.

The movie was 'transposed' into English FROM German, as was nicely done in the first 2 minutes. You are supposed to use your imagination that the entire cast would have been speaking german in real. The viewer is drawn into their language by the merge at the begnning, so it's as if WE are Germans. So the movie needs ot be totally in OUR language to achieve this. Having them speak with German accents would be meaningless and LESS realistic. If you don't have the brains to 'get' this, too bad.
