One thing i do know as a fact is America was founded as a republic not a democracy according to the founding father. So i beg someone to please explain to me when and how we became a democracy all the sudden.
PLZ don't base your views on a dumbass video by the John Birch Society (if that's what you're doing). It is completely meaningless for the most part to talk about "republic" and "democracy" as mutually exclusive terms. (Who said we are a "democracy" BTW?! haha)
Want smaller government? Study Swiss government. They are a constitutional republic that uses direct democracy to make it possible. Participation in power by citizens to prevent corruption by concentrated power. How novel!
its so funny people think we live in a democracy in the USA. Well really i guess its sad, not for the people who think it but the people who figured no one would wake up to it after they were taught we were on in high school... Polyarchy For The Loss.
1) The Supreme Court was never meant to have the authority to interpret the Constitution for the entire nation. It's jurisdiction was intended to be strictly Federal. If only people knew what the original intent was...
2) "Checks & Balances" is a myth. Just because we learned about it in school does not make it true.
Do you know the difference? Go watch shanedk's video about this. The US is written to be a republic, and definitely should be one. Unfortunately our schools, politicians, and the general population has forgotten this.
The difference is that a democracy is mob rule, whereas a republic protects minorities from the majority with the help of a constitution. I despise appeals to democracy.
Yes, I know the difference. You shouldn't assume people don't know the difference. It's really a simple concept. We live in a democratic representative republic, so it is a democracy and a republic.
Calm down. The national initiative doesn't do anything to hurt minority rights. They're protected by the Supreme Court, whose members have lifetime appointments. There's no risk. What we're debating is a democratic representative republic vs a directly democratic representative republic. That's all
If you think the supreme court does their job even half the time you're wildly delusional.
The supreme court is appointed the president and elected by congress. And the people they tend to appoint as justices are even more careless tyrants than the people writing the laws.
The DEA, the BATF, the DOA, the DOE, FAFSA, FEMA, the DOL, the FDA, most of the FCC, and many more bureaucracies are unconstitutional. Not to mention innumerable unconstitutional laws have been written, passed, signed, enforced, even challenged and presented to the supreme court who refuses to interpret the constitution the only sensible way it can be interpreted, literally.
Well, then I guess there needs to be a constitutional amendment to allow for them, huh? It doesn't sound like you know the difference between a constitutional amendment and a statute. You know the legislative branch exists for the purpose of passing statutes right? Is that whole branch of government unconstitutional? LOL
Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce, coin money, and build an army. That's about it. Beyond that, yes, everything they do IS unconstitutional. This is stated VERY clearly in the tenth amendment.
It's really too bad our socialist school systems have not just failed to teach you this, but have taught you the opposite.
Unsustainable? ALL governments are unsustainable. Even a republic if our people are so passive as to sit idly. Pick up a gun and try to change some things, if I didn't fear prison or worse I'd start by putting a bullet into every prosecutor involved in the charlie lynch trial.
I think there can be sustainable systems. You can call them whatever you want. I'm sort of a hardcore pacifist so I think if you're picking up guns you're not solving the problem, you *are* the problem.
I'd like to change the laws though, with petitions and initiatives. I'm a libertarian socialist.
Do you have evidence of one? Democracy surely is not a sustainable system, nor would I want it to be considering how evil mob rule would be.
Hitler, Mao, and many other dictators were democratically elected.
And are you saying that our founding fathers didn't solve problems? They actually were willing to break the law and kill people even over much lesser infringements on their rights than what the current government is doing.
You name despots that were democratically elected like that's relevant or something. There are thousands of elected leaders who weren't despots? What's your fucking point? What a stupid argument to make.
Hitler and Mao and many other dictators wore pants. Does that mean pants are bad?
Yes, because our constitution does sprout arms and legs and kicks the ass of any politician who ignores it.
It's not a moot point, it's absolutely relevant. We MUST remember that the constitution is only as powerful as the people willing to raise guns in defense of it. And we must remember that the purpose of the constitution was NOT to grant power* to the people, but to prevent power* from being attained by ANYONE.
*the power of force/coercion, the power all governments wield
You're not a libertarian socialist. the two views are incompatible. There are libertarians, there are socialists, and then there are socialist assholes like you who, in the process of attempting to hide the evils of your ideology veil the name libertarian without understanding either socialism or libertarianism.
You're about as libertarian as china is a republic.
I'm afraid you're a little kid who doesn't really know anything. The only place 'libertarian' means 'capitalist' is America. So, yes, I *am* a libertarian socialist. Are civil libertarians capitalists in your mind, too? Gimme a break...
I don't give a fuck about your ignorant conception of socialism. You're obviously a dickhead who's beyond reason anyway. You know, people *do* voluntarily associate themselves in socialist systems, right?
Unless your form of socialism doesn't involve the government taxing people or putting restrictions on how people can conduct legitimate businesses, in which case socialism is a very pour choice of word, you are by definition NOT a libertarian.
OK. What is Switzerland? It's a republic with a constitution modelled after ours. What is the difference between their initiative procedures and the ones we have in 24 states? How do we elect the president of the United States? Is majoritarian rule only legitimate when representative government has the power to corrupt the electoral process so they can cover their collective asses? You are regurgitating terms from hearsay in the form of a quasi-argument that is practically meaningless.
At first I was very skeptic about this whole NI4D idea, but after seeing this video, it puts my fears of it overriding the judicial to rest. If its the way the video describes I'm all for it, the technology exist to fix the coagulated congress.
"1-person 1-vote" is the problem. It is the same old political ideas with different people. People suffer more and more, corruption and embezzlement is on the rise and the gap between the minority rich and the majority poor keeps on widening. I think the democratic reform idea that says: "the more you earn, the less your vote counts and vice versa" is the best for now. It is called VOTE SIZING and I recommend everyone to find out about this.
DUH, everyone knows that democracy is "MOB RULE"! Restore teh Republic! Ron Paul is teh only answer!!!11!!!111!!11 We needs a politician to give us wut we needs cuz we iz 2 ignt to no!!!11!!!111
We shouldn't even vote. Let's appoint Ron Paul as emperor for life through some incredible populist movement and force scientists to build cloning devices so we can have Ron Pauls for all eternity.
Nothing against Paultards, except the fact that many in the "movement" have the maturity of 12 year old on a steady diet of internet porn and Red Bull.
Ron Paul is great. I mean that. A lot of his supporters? Fuckin' retarded.
This is retarded. The United States is a Constitutional Republic. (not anymore) It was NEVER a democracy. The founding fathers HATED democracy. It is not mentioned ONCE, in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Furthermore; if this was to go down: who is going to supply the public with information - LOL, the mainstream media; good luck with that one. You know objectivity, the facts, the truth... ;)
The country would definitely see an improvement if the same people who think Obama is a Muslim and feel that a post-Katrina government can efficiently run a socialist nation were direct legislatures. I'll take my corporate funded puppets over the ignorant masses thank you.
What's hilarious is when these same people cite Switzerland as an example of Libertarianism in action on the issues. They want liberty served on a silver platter without the work. Don't hold your breath. Actually go ahead: have a tantrum, pass out and further enable the injustices. It's your civic duty.
First off, you're wrong from the start. We live in a constitutional Republic not a "Mob rule" democracy. Second off,, the sheople of America I would not trust to vote on laws, they are way too susceptible to propaganda. In fact, this film is propaganda. 1 star for you!
I'm british but even I can understand the american presidential/law system and see it needs a few changes...If I was american I'd vote yes for ni4d :)
Wisconsin is missing from the map of states that allow iniatives. In fact Wisconsin was the first state to have initiative and referendum under LaFollette leadership.
If you actually read the act and the amendment you will find that its power reaches over the other branches of government. It creates a board of trustees that chooses laws we vote on. Depending on how we vote, we could create a better America that is for the people, or we could complete destroy equality and democracy in America. It all depends on how 51% of us votes. It would be easier just to make a third branch of congress that is based off of initiative style voting.
I'm a little torn on this subject. Obviously the end result would be for the best, but I can't imagine how fast we would vote ourselves into a welfare state.
It's about time we took back power from those abusing it--our elected officials--who are bought and paid for. Maybe then we'll actually have decent presidential candidates to choose from who actually deal with the real issues.
Democracy cannot exist permanently. The majority of citizens will always vote for candidates that promise the most benefits. Democracies always end in dictatorship. (Hitler promised to fix the economy. He got 98% of the vote*).
But he (Adolf) also had a constitution that was ways too easy to overtrow.
I have a lower middle class background and I live in a contry where Initiative and Referendum is the key element of politics (Almost any decicion of gouverment or parlyment can be overtrown at the ballot box)
and from my personal experiance I can not agree on any of the points you lined out.
And it worked for us long before Hitler of Stalin where born
I think it was Thomas Jefferson who once said "democracy is mob rule, were 51% of the people may take 49% of the peoples rights away" i prefer democracy, but that is a pretty good way of looking at it.
Democracy cannot exist permanently. The majority of citizens will always vote for candidates that promise the most benefits. Democracies always end in dictatorship. (Hitler promised to fix the economy. He got 98% of the vote).
A Democracy gave power to the Consitution, its the minority that is dismantaling it. Its time the Democracy came around again, enacted the NI4D to set straight the minority who wishes to silence the majority.
I agree with strumr91 I don't like the Idea of some MTV, Paris Hilton watching air head voting on laws. Representative Govt would work if people cared and and lit a fire under the asses of our representatives do do the right thing. This system is for a democracy and people forget this is NOT A DEMOCRACY it is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC! The founders hated democracy, democracy is mob rule where 51% of the people can take away the rights of other 49%.
i think its a great idea, but I'm not even sure if the people are smart enough. I know I sound like a jerk saying it, but there are just so many STUPID PEOPLE. Maybe before we do this we should have an educational reform so that the people are trained to think critically, rather than just spitting back the information they're given. Unfortunately, that concept isn't really in the government's interest, is it?
u kno wat?! if we enact this amendment then you could pass a law making education #1 priority. we could make government classes required for 2 years in high school. i live in Oregon here we have ballot measure! majority rules that is :) i love the system, we passed a law to allow people with severe disabilitys or ailments to be able to legally commit suicide. in the most humane way possible that is.
American Claim It Democracy Country But It Has Only Two Political Party. That Not Democracy At All.Why Don't It Three Or Five Political Party That Democracy.
Gravel is an amazing man. He has accomplished a great deal on our behalf in the past and this initiative shows that he is still on the side of the citizens. The current "front runners" are definitely not going to act in our best interests. Obama claims change but has named no specifics in what or how things will change. He claims to not be taking lobbyist money, but that's a lie. Clinton is even worse. She and Bill are so paid for it's not even funny. And McCain? Well, let's just not go there.
ALL of the current presidential "frontrunners" ARE CORRUPT!!! Just go to the top of THIS page, then type in "gravel clinton obama", then click on each of the first 2 videos listed on THAT page!!! MIKE GRAVEL...OUR ONLY HOPE!!!
WHY DOESN'T this video specify that MIKE GRAVEL (THE ONLY NON-CORRUPT CANDIDATE STILL RUNNING) is the person WHO DRAFTED THE "NATIONAL INITIATIVE"?!?!?!?!?!

a vote is a petition. you are petitioning a coercive violent monopoly to act on your behalf, in your interests, at the expense of others. those who do not formally sign the social contract, must not be subjected to it. the arguments for democracy are necessarily exclusively practical ones. there exists no moral justification for it.
this is supposed to be a democratic republic, not a corporatist empire. tyranny of the masses (pure democracy) might not be any better since our population has been severely dumbed down. look at who we vote for anyways (reagan/bush, bush, clinton, clinton, bush, bush, clinton, probably clinton again in 2012), no disrespect to reagan, he didn't want to run with bush. but, what the hell, count me in!
Learn about Mike Gravel by watching the short series "Tribute to Mike Gravel: The Modern Day Thomas Paine". /watch?v=arS8nFguDsU
Produced by overmind25, who is a very informed young person.
The series informs you what Gravel stands for and what he intends to do. There's not a lot of deception or talking around subjects. Gravel says what he believes is important for the country. Listen to the content.

C'mon! The US is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.
If the Majority doesn't like your house, they could vote to destroy it - without question, as long as the majority wins, right? But with a constitutional republic, a judge would prosecute their asses off. That's the America we REALLY live in.
Frankly, this sounds much, MUCH more Constitutional than Ron Paul's "free markets" for corporationscrap. "Libertarianism" is BS, and not of , by and for WE THE PEOPLE.
Because people love their propaganda, and idiots are easily swayed by a few soundbytes. Ron Paul talks about a Revolution, but he's as much politics as usual as the next guy.
Interesting! I was pregnant near a paper mill in St Mary's GA , near Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in 1980 and my son was born with Asperger's Syndrome. The paper mill was one of the worst polluters in the state of GA , and both St Mary's and Kings Bay were later declared Superfund Sites by the govt. Would Ron Paul side with the people or the polluters? You decide!
My son also has Asperger's syndrome because his vaccinations had too much mercury in then.pharmacutical industry has alot of clout in Washington. Mercury is a good preservative, it's in womens makeup too.
The Government allowed the steel mills to polute, the steel mills, payed the slap on the wrist fines but the people's individual and property rights were not protected.
Obviously you have not even READ the Declaration of Independence. It is a mere simple letter to King George III stating that they are no longer going to abide by the Monoarchy and that they do not recognize its authority. There is nothing mentioned at all about how government should be set up. There was no national government yet to set up. The War wasn`t even near finished.
"Democracy is the most vile form of government... democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention: have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property: and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths" - James Madison, the FATHER of the constitution
The founders worked with concepts, it is closed minded and stupid to attach quotes to specific arguments. You attach concepts to specific arguments, and quotes to concepts.
Yes, I have. In fact, I've had this conversation with the professor under whom I earned my degree. He agrees that Direct Democracy is now the responsible solution.
I've done my learning in history, what are your credentials?
Here's another Jefferson quote for you, because it's obvious that you've started to spam:
"Unless the mass retains sufficient control over those entrusted with the powers of their government, these will be perverted to their own oppression, and to the perpetuation of wealth and power in the individuals and their families selected for the trust."
you cannot consent for me to be governed...only i can consent to be governed...democracy is the tyranny of the majority

its so funny people think we live in a democracy in the USA. Well really i guess its sad, not for the people who think it but the people who figured no one would wake up to it after they were taught we were on in high school... Polyarchy For The Loss.
WTB REAL USA Democracy.

I bet these people also think that the 17th Amendment was a good idea, too.
gunsandbullhorns 3 years ago
1) The Supreme Court was never meant to have the authority to interpret the Constitution for the entire nation. It's jurisdiction was intended to be strictly Federal. If only people knew what the original intent was...
2) "Checks & Balances" is a myth. Just because we learned about it in school does not make it true.
gunsandbullhorns 3 years ago
Why is it that a bunch of pictures of Presidents are flashed across the screen when the narrator is talking about "making laws"?
I think this video is trying to feed the misconception that Presidents make laws.

The US is a republic.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
But should it be? We're really suffering. And the world is, too.
mistaspot1 3 years ago
Do you know the difference? Go watch shanedk's video about this. The US is written to be a republic, and definitely should be one. Unfortunately our schools, politicians, and the general population has forgotten this.
The difference is that a democracy is mob rule, whereas a republic protects minorities from the majority with the help of a constitution. I despise appeals to democracy.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
Yes, I know the difference. You shouldn't assume people don't know the difference. It's really a simple concept. We live in a democratic representative republic, so it is a democracy and a republic.
Calm down. The national initiative doesn't do anything to hurt minority rights. They're protected by the Supreme Court, whose members have lifetime appointments. There's no risk. What we're debating is a democratic representative republic vs a directly democratic representative republic. That's all
mistaspot1 3 years ago
If you think the supreme court does their job even half the time you're wildly delusional.
The supreme court is appointed the president and elected by congress. And the people they tend to appoint as justices are even more careless tyrants than the people writing the laws.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
The DEA, the BATF, the DOA, the DOE, FAFSA, FEMA, the DOL, the FDA, most of the FCC, and many more bureaucracies are unconstitutional. Not to mention innumerable unconstitutional laws have been written, passed, signed, enforced, even challenged and presented to the supreme court who refuses to interpret the constitution the only sensible way it can be interpreted, literally.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
Well, then I guess there needs to be a constitutional amendment to allow for them, huh? It doesn't sound like you know the difference between a constitutional amendment and a statute. You know the legislative branch exists for the purpose of passing statutes right? Is that whole branch of government unconstitutional? LOL
You guys crack me up.
mistaspot1 3 years ago
Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce, coin money, and build an army. That's about it. Beyond that, yes, everything they do IS unconstitutional. This is stated VERY clearly in the tenth amendment.
It's really too bad our socialist school systems have not just failed to teach you this, but have taught you the opposite.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
The united states is NOT a democracy nor should it be, nor has it ever been. It is a republic. Once upon a time this was common knowledge.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
But it's unsustainable. We're headed for all-out destruction. We're slaves.
mistaspot1 3 years ago
Unsustainable? ALL governments are unsustainable. Even a republic if our people are so passive as to sit idly. Pick up a gun and try to change some things, if I didn't fear prison or worse I'd start by putting a bullet into every prosecutor involved in the charlie lynch trial.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
I think there can be sustainable systems. You can call them whatever you want. I'm sort of a hardcore pacifist so I think if you're picking up guns you're not solving the problem, you *are* the problem.
I'd like to change the laws though, with petitions and initiatives. I'm a libertarian socialist.
mistaspot1 3 years ago
Do you have evidence of one? Democracy surely is not a sustainable system, nor would I want it to be considering how evil mob rule would be.
Hitler, Mao, and many other dictators were democratically elected.
And are you saying that our founding fathers didn't solve problems? They actually were willing to break the law and kill people even over much lesser infringements on their rights than what the current government is doing.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
I said "can be" so no, I don't.
You name despots that were democratically elected like that's relevant or something. There are thousands of elected leaders who weren't despots? What's your fucking point? What a stupid argument to make.
Hitler and Mao and many other dictators wore pants. Does that mean pants are bad?
mistaspot1 3 years ago
My point is that democracy is NOT better than a republic. Democracy can and does produce tyranny.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
OK, but it's a moot point because we'll still have a Constitution, thus remaining a republic.
mistaspot1 3 years ago
Yes, because our constitution does sprout arms and legs and kicks the ass of any politician who ignores it.
It's not a moot point, it's absolutely relevant. We MUST remember that the constitution is only as powerful as the people willing to raise guns in defense of it. And we must remember that the purpose of the constitution was NOT to grant power* to the people, but to prevent power* from being attained by ANYONE.
*the power of force/coercion, the power all governments wield
Libertarianist 3 years ago
You're not a libertarian socialist. the two views are incompatible. There are libertarians, there are socialists, and then there are socialist assholes like you who, in the process of attempting to hide the evils of your ideology veil the name libertarian without understanding either socialism or libertarianism.
You're about as libertarian as china is a republic.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
I'm afraid you're a little kid who doesn't really know anything. The only place 'libertarian' means 'capitalist' is America. So, yes, I *am* a libertarian socialist. Are civil libertarians capitalists in your mind, too? Gimme a break...
I don't give a fuck about your ignorant conception of socialism. You're obviously a dickhead who's beyond reason anyway. You know, people *do* voluntarily associate themselves in socialist systems, right?
mistaspot1 3 years ago
Unless your form of socialism doesn't involve the government taxing people or putting restrictions on how people can conduct legitimate businesses, in which case socialism is a very pour choice of word, you are by definition NOT a libertarian.
Libertarianist 3 years ago
There is a flaw in this video, the US is not a democracy, it´s a constitutional REPUBLIC. There´s a difference.
Look for the video "political spectrum" to see what I mean.
ynotlex 3 years ago

It is called VOTE SIZING and I recommend everyone to find out about this.

here in switzerland, the people go vote about changes in the constitution and the law all the time.
zhinch 3 years ago
If you actually read the act and the amendment you will find that its power reaches over the other branches of government. It creates a board of trustees that chooses laws we vote on. Depending on how we vote, we could create a better America that is for the people, or we could complete destroy equality and democracy in America. It all depends on how 51% of us votes. It would be easier just to make a third branch of congress that is based off of initiative style voting.

i think its a great idea, but I'm not even sure if the people are smart enough. I know I sound like a jerk saying it, but there are just so many STUPID PEOPLE. Maybe before we do this we should have an educational reform so that the people are trained to think critically, rather than just spitting back the information they're given. Unfortunately, that concept isn't really in the government's interest, is it?

u kno wat?! if we enact this amendment then you could pass a law making education #1 priority. we could make government classes required for 2 years in high school. i live in Oregon here we have ballot measure! majority rules that is :) i love the system, we passed a law to allow people with severe disabilitys or ailments to be able to legally commit suicide. in the most humane way possible that is.

a vote is a petition. you are petitioning a coercive violent monopoly to act on your behalf, in your interests, at the expense of others. those who do not formally sign the social contract, must not be subjected to it. the arguments for democracy are necessarily exclusively practical ones. there exists no moral justification for it.
GaleryonTheMystic 4 years ago
this is supposed to be a democratic republic, not a corporatist empire. tyranny of the masses (pure democracy) might not be any better since our population has been severely dumbed down. look at who we vote for anyways (reagan/bush, bush, clinton, clinton, bush, bush, clinton, probably clinton again in 2012), no disrespect to reagan, he didn't want to run with bush. but, what the hell, count me in!

C'mon! The US is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.
If the Majority doesn't like your house, they could vote to destroy it - without question, as long as the majority wins, right? But with a constitutional republic, a judge would prosecute their asses off. That's the America we REALLY live in.
